Chapter 4
When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law
Chapter 4
That basin of water didnât snap Kristin out of it. Instead, it made her come down with a raging. fever.
âWhatâs going on here? We need to take action, stat!â While making rounds, the doctor noticed something was off about Kristinâs complexion and lip color and did a quick checkâup. âRush her to the ER, now!ââ
Vincent stood frozen, his fingers tingling numbly, momentarily losing his composure and grabbing Clarence by the collar. âDidnât you say she was faking it?â
Clarence was also panicking, swatting away Vincentâs hand. âHow would I know? Sheâs not exactly a stranger to drama⦠Ever heard of crying wolf?â
âDonât worry. Kristin wonât kick the bucket,â Mamie declared, strutting in her high heels with all the airs of a wealthy lady. âDr. Lawrence, she agreed to donate a kidney to our Ruby, so check hers out while youâre at it. See if itâs good to go.â
The doctor frowned slightly. âLetâs focus on saving her first.â
âDr. Lawrence, your father and Johnnie are good buddies. I wonât beat around the bush,â Mamie implied, hinting at the doctor to prioritize the transplant since the patient had agreed, and all paperwork would be signed, absolving the doctor and hospital of much responsibility should anything go south.
As the emergency room staff whisked Kristin away. Connor Lawrence rose, straightening his white coat, and glanced at Vincent and Clarence. âLady, Iâm just a doctor. Healing the sick and saving lives is my calling. As for the rest, itâs not part of what this coat stands for.â
âYou!â Clarence, a bit angry, was about to retort but got cut off by Mamie.
âWhatâs the rush? In a bit, have your dad ring up his father. Doctors need to save face. Some things are better left unsaid,â Mamie advised, giving Vincent a look. âVincent, Ruby is your fiancée. You must take care of her.â
Vincent nodded. âMrs. Turner, I will.â
In the ER.
âKris, hang in there. Youâve got to pull through. Iâm waiting for you outside. Donât be scared. Iâm right here. Kris, I wonât leave you hanging.â

Under the harsh lights, Kristinâs consciousness was fuzzy.
Five years ago, she had a premature baby and barely survived a massive hemorrhage.
No one cared whether she lived or died. Ironically, the brother who had been her source of comfort outside the hospital room wasnât Clarence but Garner Collins, her real brother she

hadnât met in over twenty years.
âDr. Lawrence, take a look at the patientâs condition. Sheâs got chronic malnutrition, a lot of old injuries, and some new ones. Should we call the cops?â the nurse asked nervously in the examination room.
It looked like the patient had been abused for a long time.
âNo need,â Connor Lawrence frowned.
He knew about Kristin, the Turner familyâs fake heiress who made headlines in Silvergrove City five years ago. It was not surprising that sheâd be malnourished after just getting out of prison.
âWhereâs the patientâs family?â Connor looked up, spotting Vincent leaning against the smoking area door, lighting up.
âShe doesnât have any family here.â Vincent replied gravely.
âThe patient is weak, with a dangerously slow sinus rhythm, likely due to chronic malnutrition. and not a suitable candidate for kidney donation,â Connor stated, ignoring Vincent and giving his professional opinion.
âConnor Lawrence, right?â Vincent flicked away his cigarette butt, his cold eyes locking with Connorâs. âSheâs agreed to donate. As a doctor, donât overstep your bounds.â
Connor closed the patient file, his presence no less commanding than Vincentâs, perhaps even more so. âYouâve got two options. Take her home, nurse her back to health, get her nutrition and weight up, then return for the tests. Or, pick a suitable match from my list of volunteers and get the transplant done ASAP.â
Vincentâs brow furrowed. âIâll go with the first.â
With that, Vincent walked away.
âDr. Lawrence, does this woman have beef with them? Why are they so hellâbent on her kidney?â the nurse muttered in confusion.
Connor said nothing, shaking his head.
The FitzGerald family and the Turner familyâs feud was the last thing he wanted to get mixed up
Out of the ER, Kristin was lying in bed with an IV drip in the ward.
Once the doctor had left and the room was empty, she seized the moment, pulled out the IV, and climbed through the restroom window.
She knew Vincent and the Turner family wouldnât let her off the hook. She had to find a way to save herself. Even for her sonâs sake, she had to survive.
She had nearly died when giving birth to that child five years ago.

Even though she wasnât clear on who the father was, the child was innocent.
Kristin never blamed the kid and never harbored any resentment.
She only knew that he was a continuation of her life, the reason she clung to life during those five grueling years in prison.
After escaping the hospital, Kristin dialed a number from a phone booth.
âFinally, youâve decided to call me, huh?â The manâs voice on the other end was deep. âIâve told you. If you want to survive, working with me is the only way. If it werenât for my protection, youâd have died in prison by now.â
âI agree to your terms. Iâll try to get close to Rhett.â Kristinâs voice trembled. âBut Iâm not confident that Rhett will be interested in me.â
Who was Rhett? The golden boy of the FitzGerald family, a business prodigy, standing at the pinnacle of the corporate food chain. He was not someone the Kristin of today could reach.
âDonât worry. Vincent wonât let you go that easily. Youâll get plenty of chances to meet Rhett. All you need to do is seize them.â
