Dahlia's POV

************

"You're seriously wearing that, D?" Coraline questioned loudly as she popped her gum and then leaned toward the mirror to look at her lip gloss. I rolled my eyes and flipped her off before walking out of the bathroom. "You should be used to my clothes by now, Cora. I've had the same style since I was in middle school." I always wore graphic tees, dark-colored—usually black—clothes, or super bright clothes. Today, for the first day of school, I decided to wear a pastel purple jean jacket and skirt with a bright yellow tank top and shoes. I figured I'd wear something bright to start the year off and then wear black for a solid few weeks.

"You look great baby sis," Denny grinned sarcastically at me. I rolled my eyes and flipped him off too before hightailing it down the stairs and into the kitchen. I grabbed a bagel and some orange juice from the fridge and sat at the kitchen counter, waiting for my two idiot siblings to finish getting ready.

"Excited for the first—" My dad got quiet as I glared at him. "I'm guessing that's a no." He chuckled before slapping my head softly. "At least it's your second to last year." He said before taking a sip of his coffee.

I scoffed. "I barely got by last year and the work is only getting harder. I might just fuck around and fail another grade."

"Get over it, Dahlia. It was kindergarten and you were a slow learner. It's fine." He rolled his eyes before looking at the time on his watch. "Coraline! Dahmer! Hurry up!" He yelled up the stairs. I smirked to myself as I listened to them both shout at him for using their actual names.

My parents sucked ass at naming people if we were any examples. They named my brother Dahmer Denver Doe. Because I guess they liked Jeffrey Dahmer, you know, the fucking serial killer, so much that they figured naming their first born after him was a good idea. They named me Dahlia Jane Delilah Doe because that was such a great idea. They named my little sister Coraline Susanna Doe, the most normal of all our names, but she still hated it. Susanna was too basic for her and Coraline wasn't great either. She always got compared to the movie character Coraline, seeing as she looked a lot like her. Same dark hair and eyes, fair skin and freckles. Even acted like her a bit, in my opinion.

None of us agreed on much, but we did all agree that changing our names when we were legally able to would be the best option if we ever wanted to live normal lives.

"Look, kid, you're gonna kick this school year's ass! No doubt." Dad smiled at me as he walked toward the front door. "Your mom probably won't be up before you guys leave. She's still not over that cold so she's resting up as much as she can before she goes back to work. But I'm sure if she was up she'd tell you to have a great day at school."

I snorted and rolled my eyes. "Why do you still talk about her like you're together?"

"I don't." He defended himself. "Be good today." He said before slipping out and closing the door behind him.

I finished my breakfast and grabbed my bag as I heard Cora and Denny running down the stairs. We'd probably be a few minutes late, but it'd be fine.

"Glad to smell you haven't slacked up on the axe." I crinkled my nose before walking away from Denny. "The ladies love it." He grinned.

"We literally don't." Cora shook her head.

"You're literally not a lady. You're literally not even a human you fucking lizard. Get in the car." He put on a high pitched and proper voice as he mocked her, causing me to laugh.

She huffed before turning to walk out the door. We followed her and hopped in the car, all dreading the first day back and ready to just get it over with.

***

"This is fucking disgusting. They need to change the laws around how long we have to be in school. They shouldn't be able to keep us here this fucking long." Cadence crossed her arms over her chest as she leaned back in her seat. I narrowed my eyes at my phone as I turned it on to look at the time. 8:02 am.

"I agree."

We both got quiet again, desperately wishing the people around us would too. How these fucking assholes were able to scream and laugh at the top of their lungs this early on the first day back, I'd never know. I barely had the energy to mumble, let alone yell. Why'd I always get stuck in the loudest, most extra first period?

The teacher, Mrs. Bledgin, said nothing about the noise as she nearly jogged around the class, asking people's names several times until they finally answered her and she could give them their schedule. She was a short, skinny redhead with freckles and large glasses and big green eyes. She looked like a cartoon, and I could just tell this was going to be a rough year for her. She looked scared to do her job. She looked like she'd just graduated high school last year herself.

"If you just give me your names I can give you your schedules quickly and then do attendance and then—" she mumbled on and on but none of the kids she was talking to were listening. I rolled my eyes, standing up to tap on her shoulder. She jumped, spinning around quickly to look at me and I raised my brows.

I'm not that tall, just 5'2, and even I was a little taller than her. I can't believe they hired this little woman to teach these big ass, bad ass teenagers. More power to her for even wanting to do it, I guess.

"I know everyone in here. I can pass those out for you and then help with attendance if you want?" I gave her my best smile and she nodded, looking relieved. "Thank you, that'd be a big help."

I passed out all the schedules in just a few minutes and then helped her with the attendance.

"Billie?" I mumbled to myself. The only name I didn't really recognize. I looked around the class again and didn't see anyone I didn't know. "I guess they're not here." I shrugged.

Once we'd finished attendance, I went back to my seat to look at my schedule. Clearly, I had Mrs. Bledgin for first period, science.

"We've only got three classes together." Cadence pouted. I laughed. "Three out of seven classes isn't bad at all. We're lucky we have any together."

"Yeah, but seeing as you're the only person in this entire school that I talk to besides Caden, I need to have all classes with you." She shook her head.

"You'll live, probably." I shrugged. "What's Caden's first period anyway?"

"Right next door, Mrs. Shaw." She sighed. "He's texting me his schedule when he gets it."

I nodded but stayed silent. Cadence was a gorgeous girl, and pretty nice too, but she had no friends besides me and her twin brother. She was always really shy and wanted nothing to do with other people. The only reason me and her had become friends is because me and Caden had, and that was because we'd been next-door neighbors since we were younger. We all became best friends when we were around eight.

Caden, unlike his sister, happened to be super popular and totally outgoing. He was always meeting and making friends with new people.

"He's only got two classes with me." She sighed as she stared at her phone. I leaned over to look at it and grinned. "Four classes with me."

The last four, actually.

Cadence was about to say something but was cut off by the sound of the door slamming open. Mrs. Bledgin nearly jumped out of her skin as she looked up from her computer to see who was coming in.

A girl dressed in all black, with a bunch of silver jewelry on, and blue hair. Even from this far away I could see how beautiful her eyes were.

Damn. I'm gay as shit.

I rolled my eyes at myself as I watched her prance up to Mrs. Bledgin's desk. "I'm late. Rough night last night, you know?" She winked and clicked her teeth before turning to look for an empty seat. Just my luck, there was one right next to...The hottest guy in school, or so I'm told, Jacob Wesley...all the way on the other side of the room.

I sighed as I watched her sit next to him and nod at him in an uninterested manner. Another pretty girl I'd never have. What's new?

At least I have Kai.

Kai Dipper, my go-to girl. She is sort of my girlfriend and sorta not. It's complicated. At least, that's what her Facebook status says.

"Okay class, listen up." Mrs. Bledgin clapped her hands like an elementary school teacher and everyone kept talking. I slid down in my seat and crossed my arms over my chest. This would be a long class period.

***

That girl, Billie, had four out of seven classes with me. Science, health, home economics, and math. I stared at her during each class I had with her, stared at Kai during one of the three classes I had with her, the one that Billie wasn't in, of course, and stared at any other pretty girl I could find to stare at the rest of the day.

I know how creepy I sound, but listen, I just figured out my sexuality over the summer and now? I'm obsessed with the fact that I like girls and that I can stare at them and feel okay about it.

"Her eyes are like fucking...see through or some shit. You know?" I whispered to Caden as I stared at Mr. Tomin, the history teacher. Caden threw his head back and groaned. "My god, I miss when you were walking around here with your tail between your legs, scared of looking at any female for more than two seconds and even more scared of talking about them."

"Thanks for the support," I grinned, patting him on the shoulder. "Her nose is super cute too. Dude, is she new? I've never seen her and I know I would've remembered if—"

"She went to middle school with us for like three months and then moved somewhere. Guess she's back now," he shrugged. "She used to be blonde. The blue hair isn't actually her hair color—"

"Yes, I know." I nodded, rolling my eyes for the billionth time today. But in a way, I didn't know. I kinda wanted to believe that that beautiful ass bitch was just magic and that her hair was just naturally blue. "Are her chains real?" I wondered aloud.

"Her parents are rich, they probably are."

"How do you know!"

"Her older brother, Finneas, works in the music lounge with me and we've become friends."

"If they're rich why does he work?"

"Independence. Life experience. I don't know."

"Does Billie work?"

"I've never met her. I don't know."

"She's in a few of our classes. Why've you never met her?"

"Why've I never met the tooth fairy or Santa Claus?! Why don't pigs fly?!" He nearly shouted in annoyance. I thought for a moment and he rolled his eyes. "Dude, I don't know her, but your brother does."

"What? How does he know her? How do you know he knows her?"

"He knows Finneas too and has for a little longer than me. Pretty sure he's mentioned hanging out at their house a few times."

Denny had been out of the house a lot this summer, but that was pretty normal for him. He was pretty popular himself.

"There's this other girl too," I changed the subject. "Big smile, big tits—"

"I'm listening."

***

I was happy that history was my last class of the day. Mr. Tomin was a pretty chill teacher, though still pretty annoying because he was constantly talking about shit that had nothing to do with what we were actually supposed to be discussing, but I'd take that over having a strict teacher any day. I had enough of those.

"Get shoved into any lockers today?" Denny shoved Cora's shoulder as he questioned her. She rolled her eyes. "No. Ninth grade isn't as bad as you and D tried to make it seem."

"Damn," he sighed. "I'll have to pay someone to do it tomorrow."

We all got into Denny's car and we waited as he ran his fingers through his hair and tried to style it before pulling off. "Give it up, Denver, you're still ugly as shit," Cora mumbled before tapping away at her phone. I laughed quietly as he started messing up her hair before he turned to look at me. "Dahlia, how'd school go for you? You know, my favorite little sister?"

I shrugged. "I'm not lucky enough to be a senior like you. But at least I'm not fresh meat."

"True that." He said before turning around again. He finally started the car and started driving home, silence taking over the vehicle as he did. We were all exhausted from the first day back.

I actually like riding with my siblings to and from school, despite the fact that they suck at getting anywhere on time, but I wish I could have my own car. I'm seventeen, turning eighteen in six months on the third of January, and I still don't have my license or a car of my own. As dad had said earlier, I'm a slow learner. Cora's turning fifteen next month and I bet she'll be getting her permit the same day she does. Before I know it, she'll be turning sixteen and getting her actual license and I'll probably be twenty one before I get mine. Another thing she'll tease me about.

I rolled my eyes at the thought. I'm supposed to be the one teasing her about things and yet she acts like she's my older sister. I've gotta fix that.

"Are you gonna be on the football team again this year?" Cora asked, not looking up from her phone. "Obviously," Denny replied. "Gonna try out for cheerleading?"

"Obviously."

I sighed a little. My brother had been playing football and basketball since middle school, and he'd joined the soccer team in tenth grade too. He'd even given the bowling team a go, but that had been too boring for him so he quit after his first year. My sister was all about cheerleading and track. She'd probably spend all four of her years in high school on those teams. Me?

Sports are not my thing. Never had been, never will be. But as much as I sometimes wished I could be like my siblings and join a team, I didn't feel so bad about it nowadays. I started joining lots of clubs once I got to high school.

"Key club, art guild, drama club, science club, adventure club, and creative writing club," I answered the question of what clubs I'd be joining this year before I was even asked. Denny chuckled and looked at me through the rearview mirror. "I don't know how you do it. I could barely stand being in one club my ninth grade year, and you're juggling six."

I shrugged to myself. "They rarely ever have meetings or activities on the same days and it's a great way to make friends. You joining any, Cora?"

"Dance." She grinned.

I nodded. Cora loved dancing more than probably anything else. She got lucky too. They'd just made dance club an option this year.

"Do you guys want some burgers?" Denny asked knowing full well what the answer was. He made a U-turn, probably to get back to Wendy's.

***

The rest of the week went by faster than I thought it would, probably because it was so busy. I signed up for all the clubs I wanted to sign up for and helped my friends do the same. People had figured out by now that I was involved with a lot of clubs and always asked me anything they needed to know about them. I'd gotten almost twenty new numbers within the first week of school and I was proud of that. Making friends used to be so hard for me but now, finally, it wasn't all that difficult.

The week was filled with club shit, sports shit for my siblings, shit tons of paper work shit for my poor dad, and organization shit too. When it was finally the weekend I was looking forward to just staying in my room the whole time and relaxing, but it was Friday night and my brother apparently had other plans.

"Yo, my friend Billie's coming over. Try not to look like a nerd."

He slammed my door shut after the announcement and I mumbled something even I didn't understand and continued laying down across my bed for a few seconds until I fully comprehended what he said.

I sat up quickly, my eyes snapping open. "Billie?!"
