Chapter 6
Arranged Marriage to HIM
After putting a pinch of sindoor in my parted hair and clasping the mangal sutra around my neck, we were officially married. The pheras were done wherein we walked around the pit of fire for 7 times. 3 times the girl is the one who leads the walk and the others are led by the guy. Now we have another function. It's typical of our caste to have it. Hypothetically speaking, this function just decided who will rule the house after marriage. It's like a bowl of buttermilk I put forward in front of the bride and the groom. It had rose petals, peanuts and a ring. The one who finds the ring first all the three times would rule the house. But honestly, it's just for fun that this game exists.
So after that is done and he basically let me win two times. Then is the time of bidaai. This is where I would be leaving my parents house and finally as his wife entering my in-laws' place. I bid a tearful goodbye to my father and my best friend and just hug the other two. All this while my face is covered with a veil.
Arjun then proceeds to take my hand and finally leads me to the car. It's around 4:30 that we leave the house. I give them one final wave before the car moves. Behind us another car is there with Roshan, his pregnant wife and his daughter. My mother-in-law and father-in-law had left when my bidaai had started, because they had preparations to do.
Arjun, hesitantly reached over and pulled my veil over my head and stared at me. After realising how creepy it was, he turned away and cleared his throat before saying," I-I'm sorry, it's just that you looked beautiful", this caused me to blush a deep shade of red.
5 hours, excluding the traffic is how long it takes to reach his house. If my mother hadn't insisted on having a marriage in our hometown, I would've reached my new home in some time.
After talking for about 2 hours, I finally fell asleep while I leaned my head against the window of the car. It was uncomfortable, to sleep with such heavy jewellery on.
"Anvi!", I heard someone call me. I swatted their hands away and tried to get more comfortable in my seat.
"Anvi! Wake up", I felt someone shaking my shoulders once again. God! Can't I just sleep peacefully! I groggily opened my eyes and noticed that Arjun was staring at me with an amused smile on his lips.
"It's gonna take 2 more hours and mom said that we could eat something, so what do you wanna eat?" He asked me.
"Burger", I replied before resting my head against the seat and sighing.

He held my hand as we both waited patiently for his parents to open the door. The house, or rather mansion was lit beautifully with fairy lights and soft music played.
His mom or that my mom as I will have to call her because she basically is my mother now. I have two mothers and two fathers. My in-laws insisted that I called them mom and dad because they didn't want to fell awkward. She did the pooja as she welcomed me and then I had to step into a plate full of vermilion coloured liquid and step out and walk a few steps leaving colored imprints of my foot. And then with my coloured foot I kicked the pot filled with rice and coins. This function is knows as Griha prawesh. It's meant to show that when a newly wed bride enters her in-laws place, she'll bring with her prosperity and wealth.
After being introduced to all the people and talking to them finally I was allowed to go into the room. I was lead to our room by Roshan's wife, Sonia. The bed was covered with rose petals and in the middle of the bed was a huge heart made out of petals. She helped me sit down on the bed and pulled my veil down until it covered my face and left me.
It was my wedding night, the thought dawned me. The wedding night in India is basically where the husband and wife are supposed to consummate. The white sheets are spread so that when they consummate and if the girl is a virgin, some of the blood will spills on the white sheets as the hymen is broken. This would show as a sign of innocence and purity.
I rested my head against the headboard and exhaled deeply before closing my eyes. I was really very tired because I couldn't sleep yesterday. I was about to sleep when I heard the door open. I kept my eyes closed. This is it! This is where we have to do it!
I felt the bed dip besides me and I finally opened my eyes to look at him through my veil. He looked handsome in the dimly lit room. He was already staring at me and just like in the car with hesitant hands pulled the veil up. My hands shook as I clutched my lehenga tightly. He slowly inched closer and cradled my face in his hands. I looked at him in the eyes as his thumb caressed my cheek bones. I averted my gaze from him and found the wall clock more interesting.
12:00, that's what it read.
"Anvi, look at me", he whispered. I shyly looked at him.
"I know you're scared, but don't worry, we won't do it. I won't do anything to make you feel uncomfortable", he said before taking a deep breath. I slowly nodded my head and he went inside his walk-in closet to change. While he did that I sat by the mirror and removed all the jewellery. The earrings, the necklace, everything but because I was married, I had to keep the chuda for a month. Some people have to keep it for a year. But I'm lucky I just have to keep it for a month.
I also had to keep the mangal sutra around my neck. This symbolises that I'm married. The closet door opened and I found Arjun staring at me. I shifted uncomfortably before he handed me his t-shirt and some pyjama pants which belonged to Sonia I guess. He must've asked her. I hadn't carried much of my stuff but just 2 sarees and 2 salwar kameez.
I quickly walked into the bathroom and changed into the comfortable clothes. I breathed in deeply as I realised how much I adored his scent on the t-shirt. I removed my make-up and made my way to the room. Arjun was sitting down on the bed as he waited for me.
"My mehendi color is dark...", He trailed off with a smirk on his face. My face immediately turned red as I understood the implicit meaning. He was basically implying that deep down I love him or rather have strong feelings for him because of the dark colour. He chuckled as he knew he had rendered me speechless. I then heard shuffling and with his hands on my shoulders he turned me to face him.
"You look beautiful with sindoor and mangal sutra", he said before he leaned down to kiss my cheek. I immediately tensed at the skin contact. He then let out a cute yawn and then helped me slip under the covers and he copied my action. I positioned myself to the farthest end of the bed and tried sleeping. I couldn't sleep because I need a teddy bear or someone to cuddle with. I kept on turning around the bed and when I faced him, I saw him sleeping soundlessly and peacefully.
I let out a groan and closed my eyes when I realised that I was the only one who couldn't sleep. Urghhhh! I felt the bed move a little and felt a presence beside me. A strong and firm arm found its way around my waist and pulled me closer. I was about to protest but he silenced me.
"Shhhh Anvi, I know you can't sleep without having something to cuddle, and you have to wake up early because you have to make breakfast tomorrow, so better sleep", he said even though my mind wanted to protest, my heart was happy at being so close to this guy. I let my hands rest on his shoulder and adjusted a little to get comfortable before I finally let sleep overcome me.
"Goodnight, my love"
