Chapter 596
Awake for Love: My Coma Bridegroom
âCongratulations, Mr. Bourne, itâs a boy,â the doctor announced, pointing to the distinct features on the screen in front of them.
Elijah swallowed hard. His voice was barely a whisper. âCan I see his face?â
The doctor quickly adjusted the ultrasound probe.
Unfortunately, the baby had turned, so only his side profile was visible.
âI saved a picture of his face earlier,â the doctor reassured Elijah, pulling up the image on the screen. âMr. Bourne, your son looks a lot like you. Itâs apparent at first glance.â
Elijah looked at the picture of his unborn son. His heart softened.
This was the first time he truly felt the reality of the child - a living, breathing being.
Suddenly, he understood why Violette had been so upset when he had insisted on medication for her.
She had felt the life inside her before he did.
âIâll print out the babyâs picture for you later,â the doctor said. âLet me first check on the babyâs development.â
Elijah nodded.
After a moment, the doctor said, âThe baby is a little small. The mother should nourish herself more, rest, and avoid excessive fatigue.â
Elijahâs gaze shifted to Violette.
Her cheeks flushed. She slid off the exam table and headed out of the room.
Shortly after, Elijah emerged with the ultrasound printout in hand.
The two shared a silent moment before stepping into the elevator.
The hospital was crowded, so the elevator was no different.
Elijah, concerned for her comfort, stood face to face with her, keeping her within his protective space.
Feeling his intense gaze, she quickly lowered her eyes.
Soon, the elevator reached the first floor.
As if it was the most natural thing, he reached for her hand, leading her out.
âViolette, the doctor said the baby isnât developing as well as expected,â he began once they were clear of the elevator. âYouâre due in three to four months. Take a break from work for now. If you need money, I can help.â
She carefully withdrew her hand from his. Her eyes were locking onto his. âThe doctor didnât say I need to stop working.â
âThe doctor did say you need to rest more. Youâre a doctor yourself...â Elijah reached for her hand again, determined not to let her pull away.
âI donât believe I need to stop working just because I am pregnant,â she interrupted him. âI havenât felt unwell. As long as I feel fine, I can work.â
She carried his child, but if she insisted on working, he couldnât stop her.
âFrom now on, you need to let me know when you go out,â he stipulated.
Violette looked incredulous. âIâm pregnant, not under house arrest! I donât need to report my every move to you. Donât use our child as an excuse!â
Elijahâs eyebrows furrowed. âWhat do I have to do to make you understand that Iâm trying to care for you, not control you!â
âMaybe some women would appreciate your kind of âcareâ, but I am not one of them,â Violette retorted, pulling out her phone to call a cab. âIâll go home by myself. Weâll see each other at my monthly check-ups. No need to contact me otherwise.â
Elijah had told her she wasnât worthy of his love.
He had claimed their unborn child as his own.
Thinking about it made his âkindnessâ unbearable.
If there was no baby in her womb, he wouldnât even bother with her.
Elijah watched her disappear from his sight. His fists were clenching at his side.
She always had a way of plunging him into a whirlwind of pain.
But now, besides the pain, he also had a son. He wasnât empty-handed anymore.
Back at the office, he switched on his computer. Melinda knocked and stepped inside.
