: Epilogue
Bridesmaid
âThe place looks beautiful,â Sloane says as we take in the event space that Maggie and Everly have transformed into a baby shower paradise.
âThank you,â Maggie says, looking very pleased with herself. âI really hope Jude and Haisley will like it.â
âI know they will,â Sloane says.
âWell, help yourself to some signature mocktails. They should be here anytime now.â
With my hand in hers, I bring Sloane over to the bar, where we read the list of drinks that Maggie and Everly spent a lot of time curating.
It wasnât very long after Sloane and I got back from London that Jude and Haisley found out they were expecting. We were vaguely aware they were trying to start a family, but we didnât think it was going to be that quick for them, and I donât know that they expected it either. I can still remember the day they told us. Jude was still a little icy toward me but warming up. We were all at Stacey and Sloaneâs house helping paint the walls, when Haisley painted on the wall that they were expecting. She asked us to check on the color in the bedroom, and when we walked in and saw they were pregnant, the entire place erupted.
It was needed, badly. It thawed Jude out completely. I can still remember the hug he gave me that day. It was a hug that lasted longer than it probably should have. It was tighter than expected, and when he pulled away, I saw a hint of tears welling up in his eyes as he said, âIâm going to be a dad.â
I knew in that moment that he was letting down his guard fully and letting me in again because he was going to need the help and support. And Iâve been that man for him day in and day out. Iâve been by his side as heâs learned everything he needed to about being a dad, and Iâve even helped him set up the babyâs room when Haisley has been too tired and too sore to help.
âYour dad is here,â Sloane whispers as she brings her drink up to her lips.
I glance toward the door, where my dad walks in with my mother. Normally, he would be wearing a suit, because thatâs all he really wears, but today, heâs wearing a pair of slacks and a simple polo shirt. Very understated for him, which I appreciate.
Ever since I had that talk with him, heâs beenâ¦trying.
Itâs taken some time, but slowly, heâs been asking Hardy and me out to lunch just to chat. We donât talk about business, donât mention our goals or our plans; instead, we reminisce. We talk about sports, we find commonality in shows we are watching, and of course, we talk about our wives.
And those monthly meetings started turning into biweekly meetings, then a dinner here and there during the week, which turned into a family dinner on Sundays. By no means are we perfect, and there is still a hint of animosity between all of us that weâre slowly but surely shedding since deep-rooted anger takes a while to heal, but we are at least making the attempt to do so.
Dad spots us and heads in our direction.
âPlace looks great,â Mom says as she places a kiss on my cheek and turns to Sloane. âYou look stunning.â She places her hand on Sloaneâs growing belly. âNot much longer for you either.â
My beautiful wife places her hand on her stomach and smiles up at me. âJust a few more months.â
My dad gives me a firm handshake, then kisses Sloane on the cheek. âWill the house be ready before you give birth?â
âYes, Stacey said only a few more weeks, and then we will be opening our second location.â
Dad genuinely smiles. âThatâs excellent, Sloane. You should be proud, especially after that article I read about Twin Haven and how itâs changing the rental landscape of San Francisco.â
âThank you. Weâre really thrilled about the growth weâve seen. And of course, we couldnât have done it without your donation.â
Dad waves her off. âIt was my pleasure.â He then looks at me and says, âI learned that if Iâm going to invest my money, then I need to start investing in the right things, with no strings attached.â
I smile at my dad as a lump grows in my throat. Had you told me a year ago that my dad would be saying such a thing to me, I would have told you, you were crazy. I never thought heâd have a change of heart, that he would take on some of the values that Hardy and I have instilled in our business, but he has. Heâs made a significant change in how he conducts himself. And itâs been a learning curve for him. Heâs taken a hit here and there and has had to learn how to deal with it, but heâs taken it in stride.
And when did I see that real change start to happen? When he realized his kidsâ lives were moving on, and if he didnât change, theyâd move on without him.
Clearing my throat, I say, âHelp yourself to some drinks. I think Jude and Haisley are going to be here soon.â
âThanks,â Dad says and makes his way over to the bar.
âSeems like your dad is proud of you,â Sloane says as she leans into my shoulder.
I wrap my arm around her and hold her tight, keeping her as close to me as I can. âSeems like heâs proud of you.â
âI think heâs proud of both of us.â She stands on her toes and kisses my chin before she yelps.
âAre you okay?â I ask, concern etching my brow.
She grips the side of her stomach and says, âYes, this bugger of a son of yours keeps kicking me.â
âDo you want to go sit down?â
She nods, and I take her over to a couch, where I take a seat and then pull her down on my lap. I lightly place my hand on her stomach and wait for our son to kick.
The day she told me she was pregnant is etched into my brain. She had been feeling off for what felt like weeks. She was telling me that everything was hurting, that she was sick, and we thought that maybe it was exhaustion from renovations or the stress of Twin Haven and the rapid growth they were seeing, but when she wasnât getting better, I told her to see the doctor. That night, she came home and had this ghostly white look on her face. When I asked her what was wrong, she reached into her purse and pulled out a folded piece of paper. I unfolded it and read the two words, written in black Sharpie.
Iâm Pregnant.
When I looked up at her for confirmation, all she did was nod her head yes.
She then told me that she must have gotten pregnant when she was switching her birth control. We were using condoms, but it seems as though those didnât hold out. At first, we were surprised, scared, flat-out spiraling, but then we realized that having a baby was what we wanted. Sure, he was coming sooner than expected, but it was what we wanted.
From then on out, itâs felt like weâve been in a blissful state. Not to mention, itâs helped that Haisley and Jude have been a month and a half ahead of us, so weâve seen what to expect and even been able to go to some of the classes with them.
âYou are going to be such a good dad,â she whispers as she plays with the hairs on the back of my neck.
My eyes connect with hers. âYou are going to be the best fucking mom.â
She smirks and then leans forward and kisses me on the lips. âI couldnât have asked for anyone better to go on this journey with.â
âSame, baby,â I answer.
âHey,â Archie says as he walks up with Sheridan. âHow are you feeling?â
After their honeymoon, Archie and Sheridan came back to San Francisco to settle some of their business and we became pretty close with them. It started with Sheridan and Sloane being friends, which then lead to me and Archie hanging out more, and from there, they became part of the group. Theyâre headed back to London shortly, but we have plans to visit soon.
And if you were wondering, yes, Archie closed on the deal with us, thanks to Terranceâs approval. Weâve been back and forth to London a few times, working on the contracts and grants to start on renovations, and every time weâve been back, Sloane and I have made our way to the Mayfair Club, where weâve avoided croquet but spent many nights on the terrace, looking up at the stars.
âFeeling good,â Sloane says. âFeeling really good.â
âWe saw the article about Twin Haven. You must be so proud,â Sheridan says.
âThey did a wonderful job on it.â Sloane looks me in the eyes. âWe were very happy with how it came out.â
âTheyâre coming,â Maggie says. âEveryone in their places.â
We remain seated while everyone crowds around together with little sticks that say surprise on them.
âAre you going to want a surprise baby shower?â I ask Sloane.
She shakes her head. âIâve been surprised enough for one lifetime. Iâll pass.â
âWhat have you been surprised about?â I ask.
âWell, the way you fuck, thatâs for sure.â
That makes me laugh out loud, drawing attention from the crowd.
She then whispers in my ear, âSaying I do in your office, never thought that would happen.â
âTrue,â I say.
âThen poking your balls in a posh, upscale club.â
âVery much a surprise.â
âThen falling in love with a guy thirteen years my elder.â
âCan you not say elder? Jesus.â
She laughs. âAnd then finding out weâre pregnant. Kind of over the surprises at this point.â
âBut the last one, that was the best one.â
She shakes her head. âNo, falling in love with you was the best one.â
