Chapter 6

The Clumsy Turn of Events

Crossed Hearts

The evening shift at St. Jude’s was in full swing, the sounds of bustling nurses, doctors yelling orders, and beeping machines filling the air. Arjun Patel, dressed in his pristine scrubs, navigated the crowded ER with a careful balance of grace and panic. He had only been working at St. Jude’s for a few weeks, but the chaos still made him feel like a deer caught in headlights.

He was carrying an impressive tower of patient files—honestly, it felt more like a leaning skyscraper—when a voice rang out over the commotion. “Careful, Patel! We’re trying to treat injuries, not cause more of them.”

Startled, Arjun glanced up and lost his grip. The files cascaded out of his hands like an avalanche, scattering across the floor. The sound of papers slapping against the tiles was loud enough to make nearby nurses turn and snicker.

“Oh no, not again,” Arjun whispered, his cheeks burning with embarrassment. He dropped to his knees and began collecting the wayward files, half-expecting to be reprimanded.

Instead, a pair of polished shoes came into view, followed by a laugh that was far too amused. “You really know how to make an entrance, huh?”

Arjun looked up into the warm, teasing eyes of Dr. Adam Carter. Tall and effortlessly charming, Adam was the ER’s star doctor and unofficial morale booster. His white coat was slightly crumpled, and his dark hair looked as though he’d run his hands through it a dozen times, yet he somehow pulled off the look with movie-star ease.

“I’m so sorry, Dr. Carter!” Arjun stammered, fumbling with a particularly rebellious set of patient charts that refused to stack properly.

Adam bent down, picking up a paper that had slid all the way to the coffee cart. “Relax, Patel. If I yelled at everyone who dropped files around here, I’d have no voice left by the end of the night.” He handed the paper to Arjun with a grin. “Besides, I think the hospital needs a new type of floor show.”

Arjun’s eyes widened. “A floor show?”

“Sure, something like, ‘Arjun Patel: Master of Medical Paper Showers,’” Adam joked, winking before standing up.

Arjun let out a small, nervous laugh, trying to suppress a smile. “Well, I’d better practice my routine then.”

Adam’s smile widened. “I’m counting on it.”

Before Arjun could respond, a nurse called Adam’s name, and he disappeared into the organized chaos of the ER, leaving Arjun to collect the last of his scattered dignity along with the files.

Meanwhile, in Elias’s Office

On the top floor of St. Jude’s, Elias Matthews sat at his grand oak desk, surrounded by papers that seemed to be breeding overnight. The fluorescent glow of his office lamp highlighted the hint of exasperation on his usually stoic face. He leaned back, the leather chair creaking slightly as he pushed away a report on hospital funding.

His assistant, Thomas, popped his head in, holding a cup of tea like it was a peace offering. “Long day, sir?”

“Long enough that I’m considering renaming St. Jude’s to ‘St. Never-Ending Paperwork,’” Elias muttered, taking the tea. “Thanks, Thomas.”

“Any time, sir. By the way, your sister texted to say that the ER is packed tonight. Something about ‘drama levels being sky-high.’”

Elias raised an eyebrow, sipping his tea. The ER, notorious for its unpredictability, had become more colorful ever since new staff joined. He’d heard mentions of a young nurse named Arjun Patel, though why that name stood out to him, he couldn’t say. Maybe it was the way Sophia kept dropping little anecdotes about him during dinner.

“Drama levels, huh?” Elias said, almost to himself. “Might as well see what all the fuss is about.”

Thomas’s eyes widened. “You’re going down there? Should I alert the ER staff to brace themselves?”

Elias smirked, setting his tea down. “Only if you want to add to the drama, Thomas.”

With that, Elias stood, adjusted his suit jacket, and headed out. If the ER was as lively as Sophia hinted, this visit might offer more entertainment than staring at spreadsheets. Little did he know, he was walking into a scene that would soon make him question just how entertaining the chaos could be.
