Chapter 26
Tempted by My Boss
VALERIAN
Valerian had made his way to Je Tâaime, his heart aching for a glimpse of Hailey. Heâd been missing her like crazy.
His eyes swept over the room, but she was nowhere to be found.
âWould you prefer to sit outside, Valerian?â
âSure,â he responded, his mind elsewhere.
He hadnât anticipated seeing Hailey outside, laughing with another guy. And to add insult to injury, she acted as if she hadnât even noticed him.
âIsnât that Hailey over there?â Colhane asked, his gaze following Valerianâs. He noticed a flicker in her eyes, a sign that she might have heard them.
He hoped she had, hoping it would make her squirm. But she didnât. Instead, she continued to laugh with the guy at her table.
His heart clenched when he saw the guy feed her a piece of cake.
After an agonizing hour, her âfriendâ finally left and she returned to their table.
He watched her, his heart aching. She was breathtaking. Then Roland called her over, and he couldnât help but wonder what he wanted.
When Roland implied that she was a whore during dessert, Valerian felt his blood boil.
He couldnât stand it any longer. He didnât know what had come over him. He stood up abruptly, calling the whole thing off.
âIâll take care of the bill,â Colhane offered, standing up as well.
âFine.â He grabbed Haileyâs hand and pulled her away from the table. He felt eyes on him, but no one dared to stop him.
Once they were outside, he released her hand and turned to face her. âWho the fuck was that guy, Hailey?â
âThatâs none of your business, sir!â She looked away, clearly not planning on answering his question.
âSo, youâre just going to pretend we never slept together?â
She looked taken aback. âKeep your voice down. People will hear you.â
âFinally, a reaction. Why are you acting so distant?â
âIâm not. Iâm just your employee.â
âThatâs bullshit, Hailey. You werenât saying that when you were moaning my name in France, were you?â
âOkay, fine. We slept together. What do you want from me now? A confession?â
âNo, Hailey. I want to get to know you better. It wasnât just about sex for me.â
âWell, it was for me, sir.â
âStop it, Hailey! You think I didnât know that was your first time?â
âSo what if it was? Thereâs more where that came from.â
Something snapped inside Valerian and he pulled her into a passionate kiss, releasing all the pent-up desire heâd been holding back.
He felt her resist, but he didnât let go. He could feel her heart pounding against his chest.
When he finally released her, she slapped him across the face, and he just stared at her in shock.
âYou canât just kiss me whenever you feel like it, you jerk!â
âWhy couldnât you stand up for yourself like that earlier?â
âBecause heâs a customer!â
âSo, youâd let him treat you like that?â
âI was handling it just fine before you decided to play hero, sir.â
He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. âAre you dating him?â
âI already told you, itâs noneââ
âIâm not in the mood for this shit! Just answer the question. Yes or no.â
âNot yet,â she finally admitted.
âWhat the hell does that mean?â
âHe hasnât asked me out yet, sir,â she replied, a sweet smile on her face.
âSo, youâre actually considering him as an option, Hailey?â
âYes.â
âWhere did you meet him?â
âIn the Maldives.â
Suddenly, it all clicked. He was the guy sheâd met there, the one whoâd kept her company. âHow did he find you?â
âI donât know. He has his ways, I guess. I did tell him where I work, so maybe thatâs how.â
âSo, youâve wanted him since then?â
âNo, he was just a friend back then. He still is, but I donât know what the future holds.â
âDid I do something to hurt you, Hailey?â
âNo, sir. Why do you ask?â
âYou sure have a knack for playing dumb.â
âIâve had a good teacher, havenât I?â
âSeriously, Hailey? Unbelievable.â
She just blinked, not uttering a word.
âWant me to give you a ride home?â
âNo need. Mattâs got that covered.â
He was about to argue when Colhane stepped out. He glanced at both of them. âIâll be in the car.â
âAlright,â Valerian replied.
âSee you, Hailey. Look after yourself.â
âSee you, Colhane.â She gave him a wave.
She turned her gaze back to Valerian. âAnything else you want to add, sir?â
âWeâre not done talking, Hailey,â he declared. Then he turned on his heel and walked away.
