Chapter 27
Tempted by My Boss
HAILEY
She found herself back at the restaurant. âHailey, over here.â Matt beckoned her with a look of concern.
âAre you alright?â he questioned.
She simply nodded.
âAlright, weâll talk after work.â He retreated to the kitchen, leaving no room for her to protest.
When their shift ended, she waited for Matt to secure the doors.
He turned to face her, his eyes expecting an explanation. She let out a sigh. âMatt, I donât have much to say. Iâm not sure what youâre hoping to hear.â
âI just want to understand whatâs happening in your life, Hails. Youâve become so distant. We used to share everything. But ever since you started working for Valerian, youâve changed.â
âMatt, change is inevitable. Itâs part of life. I canât stay the same Hailey youâve always known.â
âYeah, but Hails, youâre not evolving in the way I thought you would. Youâve become so secretiveâyou were always a bit reserved, but not like this.
âYou used to let me in, but now I feel shut out.â
âMatt, some things are meant to be shared, and some arenât. You must understand that. Iâm sure you have your own secrets.â
âYeah, but my secrets arenât like yours, Hails. If I shared mine, it could jeopardize our friendship.â
âHow so, Matt? Thereâs nothing that could ever ruin our bond. Youâre like a brother to me.â
Matt let out a sigh. âI just want whatâs best for you, Hails.â
âI know, and I promise you, Iâm doing just fine.â
âAlright, if you say so.â
âFancy some ice cream?â She linked her arm with his.
âNow, Hails?â
âWhy not?â
He seemed to ponder the idea.
âCome on, Matt. We used to do this all the time. For old timesâ sake?â She flashed him a smile.
âAlright, letâs do it. I think Rogers is still open. We can grab some cookie dough.â
Her excitement was palpable.
âWow, when was the last time I saw you this thrilled?â He laughed.
At Rogers, she was practically bouncing. She ordered two scoops of cookie dough, mint, and cheesecake. Matt stuck with just cookie dough.
As they settled in, she realized it was nearly two in the morning. She squirmed in her seat, scooped up a spoonful of ice cream, and popped it into her mouth.
âSome things never change.â
âWhat are you talking about, Matt?â
âI mean your late-night ice cream cravings, and that look on your faceâitâs like youâre tasting these flavors for the first time.â
She giggled. âReally?â
âAbsolutely. Itâs nice to see you smile.â
âHave you finished all the seasons of ~Jane the Virgin~?â
âNope.â
âYouâre lying, Matt. But to even the score, I did watch all the seasons of ~Brooklyn Nine-Nine~ without you.â
âNo way, Hailsâthatâs crossing a line.â
âWell, if weâre being fair, we both messed up. But I wouldnât mind rewatching all the episodes with you.â
âThey were that good, huh?â
âAmazing! But I wonât spoil anything for you.â
âHails, if I revealed the major twist in ~Jane the Virgin~, youâd be furious.â
âNo, the twist in ~Brooklyn Nine-Nine~ is way bigger, trust me.â
âAlright, Hails, hereâs the deal. Weâll watch both shows and then decide which one has the biggest twist.â
âSounds good. And the loser has to buy dinner and dessert.â
âDeal, milady.â
She laughed. It felt like old times with Matt.
After they finished their ice cream, Matt walked her to the bus stop. She boarded the bus and waved goodbye.
As she sat there, she began to wonderâwas Matt right? Had she changed for the worse without realizing it?
