Chapter 29
Tempted by My Boss
HAILEY
The waiter came back before Valerian could answer. âWhat can I get you two?â
Valerian turned to Hailey, asking, âCan I order for us?â
She nodded. âSure.â
âTwo steaks, please,â he told the waiter.
âAnd how would you like those cooked?â
âMedium rare for me.â
The waiter turned to Hailey. âAnd for you, miss?â
âMake mine well done, please.â
âAnything else?â the waiter asked.
âNo, thatâs all,â Valerian said, dismissing him.
Just as Valerian was about to continue their conversation, the waiter returned with their drinks. He set a glass in front of each of them. âCan I get you anything else while you wait?â
Valerian glanced at Hailey, who shook her head. âNo, weâre good, thank you.â
âThen weâre all set,â he told the waiter.
Valerian took a sip of his wine, then gestured for Hailey to do the same. She took a small sip and set her glass down.
âSo, Hailey, how have you been?â
âIâve been okay. How about you?â
âIâm good.â
Hailey shifted uncomfortably, waiting for him to bring up what had happened. But he didnât seem to be in any hurry.
Valerian continued to ask her questions, and she answered them slowly.
Then their food arrived.
âEnjoy your meal,â the waiter said.
âThank you,â Hailey replied.
They started eating, and the food was amazing. She hadnât had anything this good since sheâd been in the kitchen at Je Tâaime.
It was incredible. She ate quickly, and Valerian watched her with a curious expression. âYou eat fast, Hailey.â
She just laughed in response.
âDo you like it?â he asked.
âI love it.â She took another bite of her steak.
âIâm glad I chose well for us.â
She rolled her eyes at him.
âWhat?â he asked, looking amused.
âCome on, youâve been here before. You knew what to order. And even if you hadnât, youâve been to enough fancy restaurants.â
He laughed. âFair enough.â
After they finished their meal, they ordered dessert. Both of them got cheesecake. Once they were done, the waiter cleared the table.
When the bill came, Hailey asked, âHow much do I owe?â
âNothing, Hailey.â
âBut I want to pay for myself!â
âDonât be stubborn. I already paid. I gave them my card when we came in. This is just the tip.â
âFine, let me at least leave the tip.â
He sighed. âAlright.â
After they left the restaurant, Valerian drove them back to his place.
~When was the last time I was here?~
âHave a seat,â he said, gesturing to the couch. He sat down next to her. âHailey, we need to talk about everything. About where it all went wrong. Thatâs why I brought you here.â
âI understand.â
âTonight, thereâs nothing between us. Itâs just you and me. Okay?â
She nodded. âOkay.â
