HAILEY

Hailey turned to face Alex. “What’s the occasion?”

“I was hoping we could talk over dinner.”

“Alright, but I have one condition.”

“What’s that, Hailey?”

“Let’s keep it low-key, okay?”

He chuckled. “Sounds good. Where to?”

“Burger King.”

“Burger King it is.”

They arrived at Burger King and exited the car. They made their way inside to place their order. “What’s good here?” He asked, glancing at her.

“The Whopper never disappoints. Grab us a table, I’ll handle the ordering.” She approached the counter.

“Good evening, what can I get you?”

“Two Whoppers, please.”

“Anything to drink?”

“A Coke and an orange Fanta, please.”

She paid with her card and waited for their food. Once it was ready, she collected it and joined Alex.

“That was fast,” Alex noted.

“Fast and easy.”

She set the tray down and they began to eat.

“This is actually pretty good,” Alex admitted.

“Right? Haven’t you had Burger King before?”

“Can’t say that I have.”

Once they finished eating, Alex turned to her with a serious expression. “Hailey, I have a significant proposition for you.”

“What kind of proposition?”

“I’m looking to expand my business, and I’d like you to be my right-hand woman.”

“You want me to be your business partner?”

“Exactly. I’m planning to start in England. If you’re interested, we can discuss contracts, shares, and all that.”

“That’s a big offer, but I’m going to have to say no.”

“Why?”

“It’s complicated. I can’t relocate. But I appreciate the offer.”

“Are you sure? You don’t want to think it over?”

“No, I’m sure.” She offered him a comforting smile.

“Is this about the guy you were with in the Maldives?”

“Yes, it is,” she admitted.

“I see.”

“I’m sorry, but I hope you find someone who can assist you with your expansion.”

“Thank you, Hailey.”

“Of course.”

They continued to chat about their plans and recent happenings until she noticed the time.

“I can give you a ride home,” Alex offered.

“That would be great.”

They left the restaurant and drove to her place. When they arrived, she saw Valerian waiting by the front door.

“Do you want me to come in?” Alex asked.

“No, that’s okay. But thank you, Alex, for tonight. And safe travels.”

“You too, Hailey. Until next time.”

She exited his car and waved as he drove away.

She retrieved her keys from her purse. As she approached the front door, she noticed Valerian’s angry expression.

“Where have you been?” He demanded.

“I had dinner with Alex.”

“Why didn’t you text me? I called you several times and you didn’t answer.”

“I’m sorry, my phone was on silent.” She unlocked the door and stepped inside, with Valerian following close behind.
