Dreams Come True
The Twin Dragons Series: Requiem City
~âSheâs not ready for both of us, brother.â~
~His breath tickled the back of my neck, sending heat throbbing through every nerve ending in my body.~
~I strained against the silk bedsheets, heart hammering. But the more I struggled, the tighter they wrapped around me.~
~I was trapped.~
~Andâ¦maybe a part of me wanted to be hereâstuck between the two men whose hard bodies pressed against either side of me. Whose faces I couldnât see. Who I could never see, no matter how many times I visited them in my dreams.~
~Part of me yearned for this place, the bed of the faceless twins who I visited every night in my nightmares.~
~In my fantasies too.~
~âWho are you? What do you want with me?â My voice was a hoarse whisper.~
~The other brother reached out in the dark, fingers gently caressing my cheekbone, my jawlineâ¦~
~âYouâre too young to know the truth, Madeline,â he said. âIt would break you.â~
~A soft gasp escaped my lips.~
~âAnd we cannot allow that, little mouse,â said his brother. âFor when we break youâ¦â~
~The other brother exhaled against my neck. âWe will do it slowly.â~

âWake up, be-otch!â
I woke with a start, blinking a few times as my eyes adjusted to the sun shining through the large window of my dorm room. The smell of the fresh mountain air wafted in through the window.
My roommate, Zayda, burst into the room, her auburn eyes bright with excitement, curls bouncing with every step. In her arms was a stack of wrapped boxes.
I wiped a bead of sweat from my forehead, trying to put the dream out of my mind.
~The twinsâ¦~
âWhatâs that?â I asked with a yawn.
âThey say theyâre for you, birthday girl!â Zayda plopped the boxes on the foot of my bed. âEighteen! And on prom night, no less.â She wiggled her eyebrows at me suggestively.
I rolled my eyesâand then her words sank in.
âOh, shit.â I groaned. âI forgot itâs my birthday.â
âAre you kidding? Maddie, how did you forget your own birthday?â
~How could I possibly remember it?~ I thought bitterly. ~I barely remember anything from before, why should my birthday be any different.~
âOh, Mads, shitâ¦Iâm sorry. I wasnât thinking,â Zayda said, shifting uncomfortably as she realized her blunder.
She bit her lipâand then her eyebrows lifted. âDid I mention that I brought you coffee?â
She held out a cup, and I quickly snatched it from her.
âYouâre an angel.â
âAnd ~you~ overslept,â she scolded. âWeâre supposed to be at Theaâs in twenty minutes to start getting ready for the dance.â
~Right. Senior Prom.~
I sighed and swung my legs over the side of the bed, then crossed the room to the window that overlooked campus, sipping my coffee.
Graceful Springs Academy was located in one of the prettiest places in the world with miles and miles of towering pines and a looming mountain in the distance.
I still couldnât believe that this place was my homeâor that Iâd only been here for a little over a year.
My time at the Academy, the last fourteen months of my life⦠It was the only thing that I could fully remember.
Every time I tried to think back further, tried to remember before I walked up to the gates at the Academy, I would get a migraine. The doctors at the Academy examined me over and over again, taking so many vials of blood I thought I would pass out. But, according to them, there was nothing wrong with me.
Well, except for not being able to remember what Iâd started to call âbefore.â Before Graceful Springs. Before Zayda and Thea. Justâ¦before.
It was like my life hadnât existed before I found myself on the steps of Graceful Springs last year.
Graceful Springs was a boarding school for the children of the elite, the wealthiest of the wealthy families living in nearby Requiem City.
And somehow, through the good graces of a mysterious benefactor, the school administrators were expecting me the day I walked through the gates. My tuition and room and board had been covered by a full-ride scholarship.
And I had no idea howâor why.
As far as I knew, I was an orphan with nothing to my nameânothing, except forâ¦
I reached a hand over my shoulder, running my fingers over the top of the tattoo inked there.
The tattoo Iâd arrived with but had no memory of getting.
As my fingers brushed the tips of the dragonâs wings, I swore, just for a moment, I felt it pulseâ¦
~What theâ?~
âEarth to Maddie! Are you going to open these, or should I?â Zaydaâs voice cut through my thoughts.
I eyed the stack of boxes with suspicion.
âAre you sure theyâre all for me?â
âThey have your name on them,â she replied, waving a tiny card at me.
I grabbed it from her and read the card, frowning.
~Happy birthday, Madeline~.
There was no signature.
âWeird.â
I unwrapped the largest box first.
Inside was a glittering dress made of green sequins. It was the most expensive thing Iâd ever seen.
The intense gasp that came from beside me only validated that thought.
I traced the sequins, realizing with a pang of disappointment that the dress was strapless.
~I canât wear this~, I thought. ~Everyone would see my tattooâ¦~
I moved on to the smaller boxes. They contained a gold, gem-encrusted tiara along with a matching necklace and earrings.
Extravagant didnât begin to describe what I was looking at.
~Who could have possibly sent me such a beautifulâand expensive as hellâgift?~
âGirl, do you have a secret sugar daddy or something?â Zayda asked in amazement.
âNo,â I murmured. âI mean, I donât think soâ¦â
~And yet⦠Could this be from the same person who paid my tuition?~
Zaydaâs and my phones chimed with a text in our group chat with Thea.
Thea

âThis was a terrible idea,â I whispered to Zayda as we walked arm in arm with Thea up the steps of the castle.
Thea was wearing the tightest, shortest black dress she could find, and she looked amazing in it.
Zayda had donned a yellow two-piece gown that was absolutely stunning on her.
And as for me⦠Well, after my friendsâ incessant nagging, I had tried on the new dress and jewelry.
The dress had fit me like a gloveâthe emerald green making my red hair shine like copper. It hung in loose curls down my back but pulled off my face to accentuate my new jewelry.
âStop fidgeting. You look stunning,â Zayda said.
âLike, Iâm actually speechless,â Thea added, then frowned. âAnd jealous.â
âItâs justâ¦â I grumbled, tugging on the sweater draped over my shoulders. âI canât believe I let you talk me into wearing a strapless dress.â
âIt was literally made for you,â Zayda protested.
âBut now Iâm stuck in this damn sweater all night,â I muttered.
âOr, you could just own the awesomeness that is your tat and let everyone see,â Thea said.
âYeah, rightâ¦,â I muttered.
It wasnât that I thought it was ugly. It wasâ¦beautiful. In a weird way.
But I couldnât imagine a version of me that would choose to have thisâthisâ~thing~ branded on me for everyone to see.
It didnât feel like mine.
But as we stepped into the ballroom and I caught sight of the luxurious decorâthe crystal chandeliers, high ceilings, and ancient statuesâmy anxiety melted away.
Along either side of the room were floor-to-ceiling mirrors, making the ballroom look impossibly large. Almost endless.
âHoly shit,â Zayda said.
âDitto,â Thea said with a gasp.
We joined the other students gathered in front of the stage where our headmistress, an older woman with wispy gray hair and a stern face, stood.
âLadies and Gentlemen,â she said, tapping her microphone twice. âQuiet please, and allow me to introduce tonightâs benefactors.â
Whispers filled the ballroom, and everyone craned their necks to get a better look at the stage.
âDo you think itâs someone famous?â Zayda squealed. âLike, ~famous~ famous?â
âItâs gotta be, right?â Thea said. âLook at this place.â
I suddenly felt a sharp sting on my shoulderâright where my tattoo was.
~What is going on with it today?~
âOne of Requiem Cityâs oldest and most esteemed founding familiesâ¦,â the headmistress droned on.
I barely heard her.
The ink on my back was starting to throb.
âMads? Whatâs up?â Zayda whispered.
âIââ
Before I could say anything, the mark began to burn, filling my entire body with an unbearable yet somehowâ¦intoxicating heat.
It was almost too much. And yet, I wanted more.
âMads?â Theaâs voice echoed in my ear.
âItâsâ¦soâ¦hotâ¦,â I panted, ripping the sweater from my shoulder to give the tattoo some air.
I heard several gasps and spun around to see the students behind me staring at my tattooâthen looking at me. Stunned.
âMaddie,â Zayda said slowly. âYour tattoo⦠Itâsâ¦glowing.â
âWhat?â
I rushed to one of the mirrored walls and glanced over my shoulder. My eyes traced over the inkâthe intricate illustration of two dragons intertwined.
Their wings. Their scales. ~Their eyesâ¦~
But instead of its usual black ink, the mark was a glowing, bright orange.
It almost looked like it wasâ¦on fire.
âOh, fuck!â I hissed, turning back to my friends, heart drumming in my chest.
What was happening?
Was I dying?
âWhat in the hell isââ
âWithout further adoâ¦â The headmistressâs voice boomed through the sound system.
The room was spinning.
My chest was going to explode.
âPlease welcomeâ¦Loch and Hael Dobrzycka!â
The ballroom fell completely silent.
My brain was justâ¦frozen, like my body was being controlled by some invisible force.
I was filled with a sense of anticipation, of ~knowing~. I swiveled to face the back of the ballroom where gigantic double doors were slowly opening.
I glanced at my feet in shock, realizing I was already walking toward themâ¦
I couldnât stop myself.
Andâ¦I didnât want to.
~Am I dreaming again?~
âMads? What the hell are youââ
Two figures stepped from the shadows into the grand ballroom.
Both were impossibly tall with piercing, emerald-green eyes.
One with emerald-green hair. The otherâs, jet black.
Their eyes were fixed on me. Only me.
The twins.
It all felt so obvious nowâthe powerful benefactor, well, ~benefactors~, who sent me hereâ¦
Who bought me this dress. Funded promâ¦
I ~did~ know them, after all, because they haunted my dreams.
But they werenât really dreams, were they?
I gasped as I realizedâ¦they were memories.
Memories of the infamous identical twin brothers who stood at the head of the oldest, most influential family in Requiem City.
Loch Dobrzycka.
And Hael Dobrzycka.
âHappy birthday, Madeline,â said Hael.
âAnd my, my,â Loch crooned. âHow weâve missed you.â
