She's An Expert

Good, Not Perfect Lesbian Story

29: She's An Expert

Jane and Fiona sat together on the couch looking out over the Potomac and the city. The space between them was defined, but comfortable. Fee was thinking about the company and what fallout she would find in the office the next day. She broke the comfortable silence, "Jane, I would like to go into the office tomorrow. I really don't think I should be away."

"Okay. Why don't you wind down for the night? I'll check in with you first thing tomorrow and see how you are feeling."

Fee nodded and shifted closer to Jane, "Will you stay with me tonight?" Her breath held in her chest and her eyes were pleading.

"Fiona, don't you think you should try to be on your own tonight? I, of course, will stay if you need me." Jane smiled, her tone was caring and professional.

"I understand." Fee dropped her eyes in disappointment and Jane felt sadness wash through her.

Jane leaned in and kissed Fiona softly on her cheek. She spoke softly, "Just try for tonight. Please, for me. It would make me feel so much better knowing that you can do this."

Jane was so close, her breath on Fee's neck was making her shake with desire and need. "Okay." Fiona's voice was strained and raspy,"But you have to leave, right now."

Jane pulled back smiling at Fiona, "See you tomorrow. I will be back for you."

----

Fiona slipped into her bed feeling lonely but not scared. The silence in her condo felt like it would swallow her whole. Sleep did not come easily and she woke several times during the night checking the clock and counting the minutes to Jane's return.

Jane crossed into her apartment and looked down at her phone as it chimed with an incoming text.

"11:00 Pickup Agent Couch"

Jane looked at the text and sighed, a sit down with Agent Couch was not exactly what she wanted to do at this stage of the operation. Her sleep would be broken too as she listened for her phone and Fiona's call in her light sleep.

----

"Good morning." Jane walked into the kitchen, dressed and ready for a day at the office.

Fiona smiled and watched her as she moved, taking her in, and thinking of her without her business suit on. "Good morning."

"How did you sleep?" Jane could see the Fee looked rested but not refreshed.

"Okay. I think I would have slept better with you here, but I made it through."

Jane smiled softly, "I think I know what you mean. May I take you into the office now?"

Fee smiled at Jane's response, "Yes please, thank you."

Sitting in the car Jane turned to Fiona speaking loud enough for Reggie to hear. "Ms. Donovan," she smiled softly, "I'm going to escort you into the office and Reggie will stay with you. I need to check in myself at my office." Fiona nodded, she was a little disappointed but was enjoying their shared secret. "I will return by 1:00pm. Do not leave your office without me. I will be back for you."

Fiona sighed again at Jane's promise, "Ok Jane, thank you."

----

Jane sat across from Agent Couch waiting patiently for her review of the case file and her notes.

"Agent Baker, how is your operation going?"

"Well. We have had a couple of surprises along the way, but I think we'll be on track for the New York event. Is there a specific reason you needed to see me?" Jane did not want to play "cat and mouse" with the woman and Agent Couch smiled flatly, reading her perfectly.

"I think you know why Agent Baker, I need to touch base with you regarding your relationship with your asset and its impact on the operation.

"Would you like me to summarize then?"

"Please."

"The operation is not in jeopardy in any way. We have access to all the available data and things are moving forward smoothly. There is absolutely nothing to be concerned about. Ms. Donovan was able to both step out for dinner and spend the night alone in her condo last night."

Agent Couch raised her eyebrow as if she was surprised and Jane smirked at the reaction.

"There is no question that Ms. Donovan has fallen in love with me. She doesn't hesitate to tell me how she feels. I think you probably gathered that from your session with her." Agent Couch nodded as Jane continued. "I told her yesterday that my contract with her would end after the New York Gala. She was more than disappointed but she has put on a "brave face."

"And you love her as well." Agent Couch made a statement she did not ask a question. Jane simply returned her gaze. "I see. How will you be able to shed your skin Agent Baker."

"It will hurt."

----

Jane sat in the lobby at Micropath waiting for Fiona to wrap up in the emergency meeting. She replayed her conversation with Agent Couch over and over. The woman forced her to face exactly what she thought about her relationship with Fiona and it was unsettling and effective as a therapeutic tool. "She's the expert." Jane thought to herself grimacing. Jane looked up and saw Fiona exiting the elevators and stood up greeting her, "Good afternoon Ms. Donovan. I'm sorry to have missed your meeting. Are you ready to leave?"

Fee smiled and sighed in relief and pleasure at the sight and sound of Jane. Jane thought she looked tired and sad. "Yes please, Jane. Thank you."

As they rode in the car Jane watched Fiona carefully. "Reggie?" she leaned forward, "please stop by Matchbox pizza. I don't think Ms. Donovan has eaten recently." She raised an eyebrow at Fiona and she smiled softly, shaking her head in conformation.

"Yes Ms. Baker."

Jane looked across the kitchen island and watched Fiona eat the carby, cheesy pizza washing it down with a cold beer. She could see her body respond to the bump in her blood sugar level and Fee smiled over at Jane with gratitude. "Thank you." She said it through a semi-full mouth.

"Of course. Slow down Fee, you'll make yourself sick." Jane laughed lightly. She watched her slow her pace and the color and life come back to her beautiful skin. As she slowed Jane probed, "How was your meeting?"

Fiona sighed and through mouthfuls of food she recapped. "It was exhausting. We may be in serious trouble here. Not only is there the legal process as Mr. Stout is investigated but people don't want to donate money thinking they are helping the less fortunate if they are not certain that's what the funds are being used for." Jane nodded letting her continue without interruption. "We're going to get crucified in the court of public opinion. Right now we're trying to figure out how to contain the damage to the company's image. It's a mess. With the gala two weeks away there is even more pressure to 'right the ship,' and I'm not sure it can be done." Fiona paused, shaking her head in disgust,"What a despicable man. So many lives."
