Chapter 2019 - The Man Sleeping beside Her
The 99th Divorce
The infant whimpered.
He clenched his fists and waved them about.
Shen Manting couldnât help smiling.
âFeed him some milk.â
Shen Luoâan suddenly mumbled from under the blanket.
Shen Manting heard him and walked out of the room quickly with the infant in her arms.
She closed the door on the way out.
Shen Luoâan buried his face in his blanket. He peeked out from under the sheets when he heard the door shut.
Sure enough, the room was already empty.
She was gone.
The room was unusually quiet.
Shen Luoâan couldnât fall asleep anymore.
â
Shen Manting fed the infant some milk and brought him to the garden for a stroll.
The morning sunlight was soft and warm. The infant winced and furrowed his brow when he was exposed to the sun.
He opened his bright, alluring eyes and looked around him.
âManting, itâs time for breakfast!â
Mother He shouted.
Shen Manting immediately replied, âAll right, wait a minute.â
Then, she heard a manâs voice in the distance. âDonât expose the baby to too much sunlight.â
She turned around and saw Shen Luoâan standing by the door, dressed in dark gray, casual attire.
He appeared sleep-deprived.
Shen Manting glanced at the infant in her arms and was able to guess why he looked so sleepy.
âHis condition has improved now, so he doesnât need to take the medicine anymore. This little guy has a quick temper. Remember to feed him milk. Otherwise, heâll make a huge fuss.â Shen Luoâan stepped forward and said in a low voice.
Shen Manting took his words lightly and said, âThe baby is still so young. Do you think heâd mind much?â
âTry him if you donât believe me.â Shen Luoâan was talking to Shen Manting, but his gaze was fixed on the infant. âI didnât believe it myself either.â
Shen Manting felt doubtful. She looked down at the infant. He seemed to be amused; he arched his eyebrows in a grin, his tender, pink gums showing.
âGo and have breakfast.â Shen Luoâan reached for the infant and carried him in his arms. âIâll be going to work later. Keep a close eye on the baby.â
Shen Manting felt a strange sensation.
Shen Luoâan seemed to be in an unusually pleasant mood today.
Why was he telling her so much information about the infant?
Nevertheless, Shen Luoâan went back into the house with the infant in his arms.
Shen Luoâan seemed to be very busy.
He left home slightly past 8 a.m. and was out at work all day.
Shen Manting held the infant and played with him in the room for a while. Then, the infant fell asleep.
She looked at the time. It was already 10 p.m.
Shen Luoâan still hadnât come home yet!
Shen Manting felt sleepy. She sat by the bed and soon drifted off to sleep.
She was awakened by the infantâs movements.
Shen Manting was already awake and alert before he started to cry aloud.
The lights in the room were turned off. Strangely, she was leaning against the bed when she fell asleep, but found herself lying on the bed when she awoke.
Shen Manting felt slightly uneasy. She turned around and saw a man sleeping beside her.
She was shocked and sat up abruptly.
The infant started to wail loudly. Shen Manting stood up immediately and went to cradle the infant.
Shen Luoâan turned over on his side. He covered his ears with a pillow and went back to sleep.
Shen Manting clearly saw his actions. He obviously had no intention of tending to the infant.
The realization annoyed her.
What if she wasnât around?
Would he have let the infant cry himself to death?
She coaxed the infant and whispered, âDonât cry. Mommy will feed you some milk. Be good, all right?â
She couldnât resist glaring at Shen Luoâan as she spoke.
But he didnât move at all and remained still.
She patiently prepared some milk for the infant. After feeding him, she gave Shen Luoâan a nudge.
