Happy Birthday, Dad
Our Dirty Little Secret
Jayce
A knock echoed through my office. âCome on in,â I called out.
The door swung open, revealing my fiery-haired beauty. A grin spread across my face as she shut the door behind her.
âYouâre late. Do I need to spank you?â I teased.
âTry it, wise guy.â
âDonât tempt me,â she shot back. âIâm just messing around. Come here, let me hold you.â
She rolled her eyes but moved closer, wrapping her arms around my waist. I pulled her into a tight hug. âYou act like you havenât seen me in years,â she said, her voice muffled against my chest.
I placed a hand over my heart, feigning hurt. âIâm a busy man. A few hours without you feels like a lifetime.â
She laughed, the sound vibrating against me, as I kissed the top of her head. âYouâre such a drama queen.â
âYou bring out the drama in me,â I confessed.
She playfully hit my arm before stepping back. âSo, guess what,â she said, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
âHmm, chicken butt.â
She gave me a stern look. âCan you be serious for once?â
âAlright, alright.â I took a deep breath, putting on my best serious face. âGo ahead.â
âArmand and I are friends again.â
Her smile was bright, but I couldnât help the pang of jealousy that hit me. I bit my lip to hide my discomfort. âThatâsâ¦great.â
âIs it?â
âWhat do you want me to say?â I asked, a hint of defensiveness creeping into my voice. I forced a small smile. âIâm going to be jealous. Itâs just who I am.â
She sighed. âItâs not just ~who you are~. You can work on it. Thereâs no reason for you to be jealous, Jayce.â
âI canât help it.â
âDonât you trust me?â she asked, her voice low.
âOf course I do.â
âIt doesnât sound like it.â
I sighed, reaching out to take her hand.
âTuli, Iâm sorry, okay? Cut me some slack. I havenât been on a date since my divorce. This is all new to me.â
I cupped her chin, gently pressing my lips to hers.
âI love you.â
âI love you, too. But you need to chill out.â
âI know. I know I do.â
âCan I ask you something?â
I raised an eyebrow at her. âWhatâs on your mind?â
âDoes it feel like youâve known me for a long time?â she asked. âI know it sounds strange, but I swear, it feels that way to me. Or you at least remind me of someone.â
A pang of pain shot through my heart. Was I about to make a mistake?
Wouldnât it be better to be honest now rather than later?
âActually, Iââ
The shrill ring of a cell phone cut me off.
âHold that thought.â She held up a hand, pulling her phone from her pocket. âHello? Oh, hey, bro.â
Her face morphed from surprise to shock.
âOh shit! I totally forgot!â
I watched her curiously as she shot me an apologetic look, which quickly turned into annoyance.
âJust so you know, I had midterms this week, Daniel. I donât think dad will be too upset, considering I was focusing on my grades. Chill out, Iâll be there.â
She ended the call and gave me a sheepish smile. âYou have to go?â I asked.
She nodded. âI forgot itâs my dadâs birthday. I feel so dumb.â
I gave her a soft smile. âYou were busy with your grades. Iâm sure heâll understand. Go have fun, donât let me hold you back.â
âOkay,â she said, pressing a quick kiss to my cheek. âIâll see you Friday.â
âSounds good,â I murmured as she left my office.
I couldnât help the frown that crept onto my face. This was going to be tougher than I thought.
Tuli
âHappy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday, dear dad,
Happy birthday to you!â
Daniel, Megan, my sweet stepmother Kiara, and I circled around him and his red velvet cake, singing the birthday song.
âMake a wish, dad,â Daniel encouraged.
He shot me a warm smile before blowing out the candle. We all cheered.
âThanks for reminding me Iâm getting old,â he joked as I plucked the candles from the cake.
âForty-four isnât that old,â Megan countered with a laugh.
âTell that to my eyes,â he grumbled. âI canât read without glasses.â
âHeâs just being dramatic,â Kiara said, wrapping her arms around him. âWait till you hit fifty,â she teased.
He shot her a playful glare and she laughed. I joined in, âWeâll make you an over-the-hill cake.â
âYou all can stay home that day,â he retorted, pretending to be grumpy.
I threw my arms around him, planting a kiss on his cheek. âWeâre just teasing, dad.â
He smiled as I hugged him tightly.
âBefore you get too old, Megan and I have something to tell everyone,â Daniel announced.
We all turned to him and Megan, their hands intertwined.
âWeâre getting married.â
