Mistake

"Where the hell were you?!"

"I was out."

Maria had just come in as Joanna called her phone for the twentieth time. She and Nicole had fallen asleep, when they woke Nicole dropped her off a street away and she rode her bike. Maria smiled the whole way until she saw Joanna's car along with two other police cars.

"With who?" Joanna asked.

"None of your business."

"You know what, we don't have time for this. Get upstairs and get ready. I'm tired of this little college girl act."

Maria was in too good a mood to fight. She followed Joanna's orders and went to get dress. As she stood looking in the mirror, she saw Nicole at the window.

"What are you doing? Joanna and the officers are right downstairs!" She whispered in panic.

"Those losers couldn't catch a cold." Nicole laughed. "Are you going to let me in, my arms hurt."

Maria sighed and moved so Nicole could lift herself up. Maria went back to her mirror and Nicole watched from the bed. Not long after Joanna came barging through the door.

"Maria, who are you talking to?"

Maria looked behind her and didn't see Nicole. "No one, myself."

"Well stop, they'll think you're crazy. Hurry up."

Maria went to the other side of her bed and didn't see Nicole. She knew she couldn't be under it. She went to the bathroom checking behind the door.

"BOO!"

Maria screamed, but it was short lived. "Are you insane?"

"No, I just really like being around you. Plus you're really easy to scare."

"You are like a big child."

"Age is but a number Maria. You should know that." Nicole wrapped her arms around Maria pulling her close.

"What I know is you have to go before Joanna has a fit."

"Ok. Ok but, you have to call me soon."

"I will, now go."

Maria slapped Nicole on the butt. Nicole hopped out and Maria headed downstairs. She was met by Joanna and her bodyguards. They headed to the the car and she saw Jesse standing at that the door. She handed Maria a note. "Don't open it until you're alone."

Maria nodded and got in the car headed to her next press conference. When she arrived the questions began. "Are you getting a divorce?"

"Where's your husband?"

"What's your view on gay marriage."

Maria just stood looking out into the crowd. She wanted so much to speak and knew what she had to say but, she couldn't. She could not continue to tell these people the false lies that Joanna had made up out of her own hate for gays, or whatever she had given them that week. Maria watched as the reports talked, asking the same questions over and over. She walked off the stage. She just could not do it.

Nicole watched as Maria walked off the stage. She turned her tv off and calls Jesse. "J, what happened?"

"I don't know. She just left the stage and when she got to the back she cried. She wants to make a stop at Joanna's house. I'll call you later."

Jesse hung up and Nicole was left in her thoughts. 'Why would she leave? Is it me?' Nicole got ready for her nightshirt. She still worried about Maria.

Maria's car pulls up to Joanna's house and Jesse lets her out. "I won't be long officer, just keep the car running."

Jesse nodded and Maria went to Joanna's door. She knocked, after not getting an answer she used the spare key under the mat. She walked in and saw that Joanna wasn't downstairs. She called her name and still got no answer. She walked up the stairs and into Joanna's bed room.

What she saw blew her mind and she ran, crying. Joann grabbed the sheet and followed Maria. "Maria! Maria! Wait please it means nothing."

John came following Joanna, tripping over his pants. "Sweetie wait!"

Maria ran to her car, "Get me out of here."

"Where ma'am?"

"Anywhere but here or my h-house." Maria said through her cries.

After driving for an hour, the car stopped. Maria got out, they were at the beach. Jesse came beside her. "Do you need anything?"

Maria looked up at her, eyes red and puffy from the tears. "C-can I use you phone?"

Jesses nodded and gave Maria the phone. She walked towards the beach. She looked at the phone and dialed the only number she knew. She waited for an answer.

"Jesse I told you I had to get some sleep. What's up?" Maria was silent. "Jesse what's up, I don't have all day."

"I'm so-sorry I'll call another time."

"Maria?"

"I'm sorry Nicole I didn't mean to bother you."

"No, no you didn't bother me. Are you ok?"

Maria couldn't hold it in anymore. She began to sob uncontrollably. She sat in the sand, not caring about her dress. She just cried.

Nicole was sitting in her bed and listening to Maria's cries. She wanted so much to help her but, she knew she needed to let it out before she could talk. After fifteen minutes, Maria stopped and all Nicole hear was the gasping for air. "Maria what happened?"

"J......I caught Joanna in bed with John."

Nicole was silent. "Come over, ok?"

"Ok."

"I'm sorry. Maria."

"It's not your fault. I'm on my way?"

Maria ended the call. She headed back to her car, brushing the sand off her body. When she got in she told them to go to Nicole's address. Jesse nodded and gave the driver directions. After thirty minutes there were at Nicole's house.

"Do you want us to wait?"

Maria shook her head, "You can go."

She got out of the car and walked up the path to Nicole's door. She knocked and was greeted with Nicole's open arms. She walked right into them and began crying again. Not because of John and Joanna. She cried because Nicole made her warm and she cared so much, even when Maria was a bitch. Nicole pulled her in the house and shut the door.

Nicole looked at Maria in her arms and saw what a mess she was. She took her to the bathroom and turned the water on. She helped Maria out of her dress and helped her to the shower. She washed Maria and took her out and wrapped a towel around her. She went and changed her wet cloths and brought Maria sweatpants, underwear and a t-shirt. She walked Maria to her bed and laid her down.

Maria hadn't said a word since Nicole opened the door. She wanted to thank Nicole but, the words were not coming out. Finally she saw Nicole walking to the door. "Wait." Her voice was raspy. "I want you to stay here. Please."

Nicole smiled and went to the bed laying behind her. Maria took Nicole's hand and pulled it over her body, scooting her back to Nicole. She closed her eyes feeling the warmth from Nicole.

"Joanna I will not leave Maria for you."

"So what, you have sex with me on the side and go home to her."

"No, we're done. For good."

"Really? Because I'm sure she has already replaced you."

"With who? No one wants her, I'm the only person she has ever been with."

"Wow, you really are a fool. She's a lesbian. Has been since college. The only reason she married you is because her mother said."

"You're just jealous."

"Of you? Her? No way. But, here look at this," Joanna handed him her phone that showed a picture of Maria and Nicole hugging at a gas station. "She's with her."

"No way, that's just her bodyguard."

"She's guarding her body alright."Joanna let out a deep laugh.
