Chapter 795
The Unfaithful Mr. Scott
Just as she said that, steady footsteps approached them from behind.
Melanie did not want to turn around, but there was that familiar smell of pine in the air. Melanieâs sense of smell was exceptionally sensitive during her pregnancy, A shadow fell over her. Eugene looked down at Melanie, his initially calm eyes rippling like the surface of a pond after a single stone was tossed into it.
However, the faint ripples quickly faded again.
âI was just telling Melanie Iâm here to buy something for the engagement, and here you are. Right on cue.â Evelynâs amused chirp interrupted Eugeneâs thoughts.
Only then did he look up. His gaze was indifferent, and his tone was emotionless. âIf youâre done with your shopping, Iâll get Lee to send you back. I still have work to deal with at the company.â
Just then, Lee approached them with a briefcase in hand. It showed that Eugene had probably just finished a meeting with a client.
Evelynâs expression stiffened. Her chest heaved as if she was holding back some emotion. She practically gritted her teeth and said, âI canât possibly buy everything so quickly. Our engagement only happens once in a lifetime, so we have to be really care with the things we choose.
âBesides, arenât you going to pick them out with me? After all, the two of us are getting engaged. I want to take this seriously.â
Without giving Eugene à chance to speak, she turned back to Melanie. âBy the way, Melanie, your father came to Jepton looking for you earlier. Did you see him?â
â
Evelyn let out a halfâsigh. âCome to think of it, it was my mother who bought your father the plane ticket.â
She worded it vaguely, but once she mentioned Peyton, Melanie understood what she meant.
She wanted to use Howardâs devotion to Peyton to mock her.
Melanie looked up at her calmly. âLooks like Howard and your mother are getting along nicely. Are you going to call him Dad soon? In that case, congratulations in advance.â
Their eyes met and they held each otherâs gazes for three seconds. Finally, Melanie looked away indifferently and said softly, âIâm not in the mood to eat anymore. Letâs go back.â
Evelyn looked at Melanie, her expression contorting with anger for a moment as Melanie casually turned to leave.
Evelyn watched her leave, her manicured nails digging deep into her palms.
She still could not accept Howard and Peytonâs relationship. She had only brought it up to mock Melanie, but unexpectedly, Melanie did not seem to care at all.
Evelyn could not help but look up at Eugene, only to realize that he had already walked away. Only Lee was left standing where he was, looking at her respectfully. âMiss Shue, Iâll take you back to the Scotts â
residence.â
Meanwhile, Melanie and Yvonne left the building. Neither of them had any appetite left.
Yvonne told Melanie to wait for her outside while she brought the car out from the basement. As soon as she left, however, another figure approached Melanie.
Eugene frowned slightly. He stopped in front of Melanie and said in a low voice, âMelanie.â
Melanie lifted her eyelids. Her eyes were cold.
The instinctive wariness in her eyes made Eugene stiffen. His fingers clenched into fists, and he lowered his gaze. Melanie was the only thing reflected in his deep eyes.
His Adamâs apple bobbed slightly, and the corners of his lips pursed imperceptibly, as if he had something to say.
âYouâre in my way.â However, before he could speak, Melanie chased him away indifferently.
Eugene was a little over six feet tall, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. He stood in front of Melanie, his body almost blocking her completely from view.
He looked at Melanie, his frown deepening. âI have something to tell you. The day you were at the hospital-â
Before he could finish speaking, Melanie looked up. The coldness in her eyes was like a knife to his heart.
He stopped abruptly. After a moment, he said quietly, âI just think thereâs something wrong with the medical report. I suggest you do it again.â
