Chapter 10:

The Reconciliation

The bar felt different tonight.

Renee had been here a hundred times, but now, the familiar space felt almost foreign.

She sat at a table near the back, her fingers wrapped around a glass she hadn't really touched. The ice had already started to melt, condensation slipping down the sides, pooling on the napkin beneath it. She didn't care.

Her focus was on the door.

She told herself she wasn't nervous, but her hands betrayed her—tapping against the glass, shifting in her lap.

And then, Jordan walked in.

The moment their eyes met, Renee felt it. That same electric pull, that same tension that had always existed between them. But now, there was something else. Something heavier.

Jordan spotted her instantly, her expression unreadable. For a second, she hesitated.

Then, she made her way over.

Neither of them spoke at first.

Jordan sat down across from her, resting her hands on the table. She looked the same—messy hair, sharp eyes, the familiar hoodie that hung loose around her shoulders. But there was something different in her face.

Something raw.

"Hey," she said finally, voice quiet.

"Hey."

Silence settled between them, thick and heavy.

For weeks, they'd avoided this. Avoided each other. Avoided the truth.

Now, there was nowhere to run.

Jordan exhaled, rubbing a hand over her jaw. "Thanks for meeting me."

Renee nodded. "Figured we should probably talk."

Jordan let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Yeah. Guess so."

Another pause.

Renee took a slow breath. "So... what did you want to say?"

Jordan shifted, glancing down at the table. For a moment, it looked like she wasn't going to answer.

Then, she did.

"I miss you."

The words hit like a punch to the chest.

Renee's throat tightened. She gripped her glass a little harder, steadying herself.

"Jordan—"

"I know I fucked up," Jordan cut in, voice rough. "I know I let you walk away when I shouldn't have. And I know I—" She broke off, inhaling sharply. "I know I hurt you."

Renee swallowed.

She had been waiting to hear those words.

But now that she had, she wasn't sure what to do with them.

Jordan ran a hand through her hair, frustration evident in every line of her body. "I didn't know what to do. Okay? I—I've never been good at this. At relationships. At feelings."

Renee's jaw clenched. "That's not an excuse."

Jordan nodded. "I know."

Silence again.

Then, quieter—

"I was scared."

Renee blinked.

Jordan wasn't looking at her now. Her fingers drummed against the tabletop, restless. "I've never... I've never let myself feel this way about someone before." She let out a breath, almost like a laugh. "I didn't even realize I was feeling it until it was too late."

Renee's heart ached.

"Jordan..."

"I thought if I kept it casual, it wouldn't get complicated," Jordan admitted. "That I could just... keep you at a distance. Keep it easy." Her voice dropped lower. "But it was never fucking easy with you. Was it?"

Renee let out a breath, shaking her head. "No."

Jordan smiled slightly, but it didn't reach her eyes. "I don't want to lose you."

Renee's chest tightened.

For weeks, she had convinced herself that Jordan didn't care. That she had been the only one falling.

But now, seeing her like this—seeing her try—it was impossible to ignore.

Jordan cared.

She always had.

She had just been too fucking scared to show it.

Renee leaned forward slightly. "Then why did you let me walk away?"

Jordan exhaled sharply, rubbing at the back of her neck.

"Because I didn't know if I could be what you wanted."

Renee's breath caught.

Jordan looked at her then—really looked at her. And there was something in her eyes, something raw and unguarded.

"I didn't want to fuck this up." Jordan's voice was rough, thick with something she wasn't used to showing. "I didn't want to be the reason you got hurt."

Renee stared at her. "Jordan—"

"But I hurt you anyway, didn't I?"

Renee swallowed hard. "Yeah."

Jordan's jaw tightened. She nodded, like she had expected that answer, but it still fucking hurt to hear it.

Silence stretched between them.

Then, Jordan leaned in, her voice quieter now. "What do you want, Renee?"

Renee exhaled.

For so long, she had been waiting for Jordan to make the first move. To fight for this.

Now, here she was, doing exactly that.

And Renee had a choice to make.

She could walk away.

Or she could take the risk.

She looked at Jordan, really looked at her. The nervous energy in her fingers. The way her lips pressed together like she was bracing for the worst.

The way she was trying.

Renee took a slow breath.

"I want you," she said finally. "Not just the late nights. Not just the hookups. You."

Jordan's throat bobbed.

"But if you're just gonna freak out and push me away every time things get serious, I can't do this. I won't do this."

Jordan was silent for a long moment.

Then, softly—

"I don't want to push you away."

Renee's heart pounded.

Jordan inhaled sharply, like she was steadying herself. "I know I don't have the best track record with relationships. I know I'm not always the easiest person to—" She broke off, exhaling. "But I want this. I want you."

Renee's chest tightened.

Jordan looked at her, voice steady now. "I just don't know how to do this."

Renee let out a breath, her lips twitching. "We figure it out."

Jordan's lips parted slightly. "Yeah?"

"Yeah." Renee gave a small shrug. "It's not like either of us knows what the fuck we're doing, anyway."

Jordan huffed a quiet laugh. "That's fair."

The tension between them was still there. But now, it felt different. Warmer.

Renee hesitated for only a second before reaching across the table, fingers brushing Jordan's.

Jordan stilled.

Then, carefully, she turned her hand over, letting their fingers intertwine.

Renee squeezed.

Jordan squeezed back.

And just like that, it was settled.

They weren't perfect.

They weren't fixed.

But they were trying.

And for now, that was enough.
