Magnolia Parks: Chapter 65
Magnolia Parks (The Magnolia Parks Universe Book 1)
I walk into my parentsâ home in Belgravia, unannounced. Itâs after dinner, but thereâs always dinner here. Mumâs a chronic over-caterer whoâs in denial that Henry and I donât live here anymore. Sometimes we do. Each have our own places now, but sometimes itâs nice to come home.
I walk into the kitchen and my mum looks up from the sink, her face lighting up.
âSweetheart, youâre here!â She pulls off a rubber glove. âDarling!â she calls out to my dad. âBJâs here!â
Thereâs a vague rumble of response from my dad and my mum wraps her arms around me.
âHungry?â
I nod. âStarved.â
I perch up on the marble counter thatâs covered in cleaning shitâI donât know whyâweâve always had a cleaner but Mum just runs around pre-cleaning before the cleaner gets here. Bit redundant, Dad hates it but he loves Mum, and sheâll never fire Nel. Will pay an annual salary to sit and have tea and biscuits 3 days a week with her though.
She fixes me a plate with too much food. Two different kinds of meat (chicken and steak), four kinds of carbohydrates and some broccoli, all slathered in her gravy and itâs way too much food and I eat all of it in under five minutes.
Sheâs sitting there, chin in hand, watching me pleasantly.
âAnd to what do we owe the pleasure this evening?â
I sniff a laugh. âCanât a lad just come and visit his mum for no reason?â
âA lad can, but alas, my lads do not.â She gives me a look. âHenryâs upstairs.â She nods in the direction. âWhatâs going on with him and Jo?â
I give her a look. âHow do you know somethingâs going on with Jonah?â
Her eyes pinch. âBecause nothing ever goes on between him and Christian and if it was between him and you, Iâd know about it.â
Annoyingly observant, she is.
I squint over at her. âInto the same girl.â
âAh,â she says. âIs she a goodie?â
I nod. âYeah, sheâs sickââ
She pours me some wine. Pours herself a bigger glass.
âAnd you, my darling?â She tilts her head. âWhat have you come here to tell me?â
I take a drink, say nothing just to annoy her.
She frowns. âGood news or bad news?â
I take another drink, smirking.
âBJ!â she scolds me.
And I stand and carry my plate back to the kitchen, rinsing it off in the sink. She scurries after me, yelling my full nameâshe plucks the plate from my hands, rewashing it herself before putting it in the dishwasher.
She turns, hands on her hips.
âBaxter James Ballentineââ
I spread my arms out wide and lay my torso down on the marble island in the middle of her kitchen, grinning up at her.
âWhat?â She frowns.
âParks and I had sex.â
A small scream escapes her mouth as she claps her hands over it. Would I ever tell my mum I had sex with anyone else? Nope. Never. Never in a billion years, but that outburst is the reaction it deserved, and I wanted it, so I told her.
She rushes towards me, shaking my shoulders.
âOh my god!â Shakes me again. âHamish! Oh my godââ
Dad rushes in.
âWhatâs going on?â
âBJ and Magnolia are back together,â she practically squeals.
I give Dad a wide-eyed, amused look and his face cracks a smile. âReally?â
I nod.
He squints at me suspiciously. âDoes she know you think youâre back together?â
âThey had sex!â Mum yells.
And Dad and I both give her a weird look.
And then her face turns to a scowl. ââFor the first time ever, I assume. Because until this moment you were a virgin.â
I shake my head once. ââWasnât.â
âAnd sheâs the only girl youâve ever been with.â
ââSheâs not,â my dad tells her.
She scowls at him, then looks at me. âAnd will be withâ¦â
I smile at her. Hereâs hoping, Lil.
âYou were safe, yes?â She nods to herself.
âMum.â I roll my eyes.
Henry walks into the room. âMum, theyâve been having sex since they wereââ I throw a dishtowel at him. He laughs.
ââtwenty-three and twenty-four respectively,â she tells Henry with the utmost conviction.
âLilââDad shakes his headââyou walked in on them at the chalet.â
âDid not.â She shakes her head vehemently.
Did, definitely did. Could have diedâmost embarrassing day of my life. Parks was seventeen, I was nineteen. Mum was⦠mortified⦠apparently to the point of total denial.
âOy,â Henry says, nodding his chin at me. âHow was that work thing, Beej?â
I smirk. âGood.â
My brother chuckles. âI bet it wasââ
My dad walks over, looks at me for a few seconds, then hugs me.
âIâm glad for you.â
Thereâs a champagne popâMumâs grinning in the corner.
I glance between my dad and my brother. âThis feels embarrassing.â
âItâs not,â she sings.
âSorry,â my dad says. âIs that my 2002 Domâ?â
Mum shrugs. âItâs the occasion for itââ
Dad considers. âIs it?â
Henry starts laughing.
Dad begrudgingly gets out some glasses and Henry comes over to me, smacking me fondly in the face.
âThis legit?â I nod. âBro,â Henry says and hugs me. âFuck me, that was a long driveââ
âHenry.â Our mother shakes her head. âThat language isnât going to win you the girl you likeââ
Henry gives me an exasperated look and hits me in the stomach.
I flinch in a tiny bit of pain but mostly Iâm laughing.
âShe forced it out of me.â I shrug, helpless.
Henry points to me. âHe and Parks did it on Dadâs company plane on the way to Monte Carlo when he was sixteen.â
Mumâs jaw drops. I grimace.
âHighly premeditatedââ My traitor-brother continues. âThey planned it for days.â
âHenry!â I yell.
I glance at Dad, nervous. Like I could get in shit for something I did nearly nine years ago.
Dad starts laughing.
âTwice.â Henry shrugs, drinking his champagne, walking out of the room.
