Chapter 24

Mated To My Doom

This was the work of me procrastinating. Enjoy!

'Kiss me like you want to be loved'

Chapter 24

There was a damp forest smell that reached my nostrils. The deeper we walked, the worse it got. The last time I was here, it wasn't pretty memories. Aside from it being dark, it seems that my mind doesn't want to remember that day.

There was a single road leading the jail; the rest was all forest.

As me and Hunter walked past many cells, I subconsciously walked closer and closer towards Hunter.

They're are some creepy people in here. One person even sneered at me. Sneered! You're a wolf, not a snake!

By this point, I am literally pushed right against Hunter, my shoulder subbing against his arms. My head barely reached his shoulders.

As I locked up at him from the corner of my eyes, he gave me a weird look. In spite of his expression, he didn't move away from me. I could feel the warmth radiating off him.

The building was freezing, even as a wolf, I was on the edge of shivering. I even eyed the light jacket that is worn firm on Hunter's body.

Greg's cell was the last one. All the way in the back. Surrounded by nothing but darkness.

"Why are the lights off?" I ask quietly to Hunter.

Hunter ignores my question and keeps walking. Feeling frustrated by his attitude, I allow some space between us.

Bad idea.

As soon as I was close enough, a hand reached out between the bars and caught my leg.

Shrieking, I see the hand first; all wrinkled and old.

I must have said that aloud because the when my eyes reached the owner of the hands, she muttered, "I'm not old!"

I attempted to pull my leg back but boy was that grandma strong. I expected Hunter to assist in my aid, but of course, he doesn't.

The lady tugged my leg making me fall on my butt. It wasn't until the metallic smell of blood entered my nostrils that Hunter stepped in.

"You freak!" I yell as I feel her nails digging into my skin.

Within a second, Hunter pulled me to my feet and pushed me backwards making me stumble. Before the old lady could pull her hand back, Hunter had it in a locked position. One move away from snapping.

Hunter must have unintentionally used his full strength when pushing me back as I ended up slamming my back against the cell on the other side of the thin hallway.

Before I could refocus, an arm was wrapped around my neck cutting my air flow. I tried pulling away but that only added pressured.

"Remember me, sweet pea?" I could recognize that voice in my dreams. And I had, in my nightmares.

It  was one of the old ladies I had seen when I was unjustly put in one of these cells.

"H-Hunter," By voice was all scratchy and it hurt to speak, hurt to talk. The grip was too strong.

Hunter froze before turning to me. He stalled.

"Don't think about it Mr.Alpha, I'll have your mate lifeless in a matter of second." Her words made me fight harder. It was no use. She had me right where she wanted me.

Why are the damn spaces between the bars so big anyways?

Hunter's leg twitched as if he was about to take a step. He wasn't looking at the lady, he was looking at me.

Call me crazy, but I wanted Hunter to care. I wanted to say that when I looked into his eyes I saw pain. Fear. Panic. The terror of loosing me.

I want to say that, but it wouldn't be true. His eyes showed nothing. He was emotionless, as is his soul.

That's the moment I decided.

Despite the offender's threats, Hunter took the chance. The chance that he would be fast enough to release me before she added just a little bit more pressure. Just a little bit more and I was goner.

The lack of oxygen entering my body made me feel numb. One second, all my circuits were blocked and the next, I was slumped on the floor gagging for air.

Hunter saved me but why do I still feel like I'm dying? Physically, my burning throat was healing by the second. But inside? I felt dead.

I sat up on the floor just in time to see Hunter rip the heart out of the old lady.

He let the organ drop to the floor, inches away from me. I swear I saw it beat.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

When Hunter's eyes looked down at me, they were fully black.

Now in alarm, he was beside me in seconds inspecting the damage.

"Hunter-" I tried to speak but he growled for silence.

Taking deep breathes, his eyes returned to it's regular ocean blue.

"Guards!" Hunter yelled loud enough for a group of well built wolves to run to us.

Once they all saw a scene, no question were asked. Within minutes the blood was cleaned and the body on it's way to removal.

Someone offered their hand to help me up, but as soon as my hand came in contact with theirs, Hunter started growling again.

Now I'm angry. He didn't help me when he could. He showed no emotion. That expected from Hunter, but something. Anything. That's all I ask for.

But my decision is made. Hunter doesn't care. The only reason I'm around is because I'm his mate and the only one who can have his kids.

Too bad for him, there's no babies in his future.

Despite Hunter's possessiveness, I gripped tightly on the man's hand and allowed for him to help me up.

My leg stinged from the deep scratches of the other old lady. As I but some weight on it, I immediately stumbled.

The guy who helped me up saw my fault and held on to my arm and waist to keep me up.

Although this time, where there is no danger, Hunter decided to intervene. He tugs on the edge of my shirt making me fall towards him.

"Hunter!" I yell as I tumble into him. Grabbing on to his arms, I balance myself.

I pull myself away from him like he has a disease. I turn towards the way we were walking from the beginning. Stomping away from Hunter, I could hear his footsteps as he follows me.

"Rosalyn," Hunter's alluring voice called out. Oh how much I hate him right now.

I initially ignore him and quicken my pace when he does.

"Don't walk away from me, Rosalyn."

I break my silence, "Don't call me that."

The further we walked, the less people there were. At this point, we were the only people at this end.

Stopping to read a sign, I turn right. Greg's cell should be here.

"I saved your life today," He commented.

I abruptly stopped walking and turned around. Hunter looked shocked that I turned, stopping a foot away from me.

"Oh thank you so much, Hunter! How can I ever repay you! You have so much integrity, oh high and mighty Alpha," Sarcasm dripped heavily with every word.

"Hey! I deserve respect." Hunter demanded.

Shaking my head, I give a dry laugh.

"You deserve nothing!"

"I saved you,"

"Because you wanted to, or because you had to?" I look at him with cold eyes and pray that he could feel the hatred radiating of me.

"What's the difference?"

"You know, it's all my fault really. I really thought you changed. Hell, I actually thought we could have a normal life as mates. Even dispute all this crap. But boy was I wrong."

"What are you talking about?" Hunter questioned.

"I can't do this, I don't want to. I don't want to be with someone who would never truly love me."

"Love? Where is this coming from? Can't we deal at one problem at a time. Let's start with this murderer."

"No, Hunter, I don't want to. I wan't to lay it all out here."

"In a jail?" Hunter laughed as if he made a joke.

"Yes."

"Alright, lets talk."

"We," I motioned between us, "wont work."

"Didn't we already go through this?"

"Don't you find it weird that we're together because we're supposed to, not because we want to. What's the point of being with someone if you don't love them?"

Hunter finally realized the seriousness of the conversation.

"No, I don't find that weird. That's how wolves are supposed to be."

"Exactly, supposed to! But not want to. What if we're happier with different people?"

"You're my mate," Hunter said simply.

"I know. We don't have to be together because of that."

"You are my mate."  He repeated.

"I know that." His eyes glazed over again.

"Hunter?" I ask when he doesn't say anything by look at me.

I wave my hand close in front of his face to get his attention.

"You're mine," He says with power emitting off him.

Grabbing my waving hand, I'm pulled close into him. His hand caresses my cheek.

I freezes. I couldn't move away.

I don't want this. I don't like this. The chanting in my head is drowned out my the sound of my own heart beat.

Tingles erupted from his fingers to my cheeks, his mouth so close to mine.

"How can you say I don't care?" I wanted to move away from his intense eyes but I couldn't.

I liked it. I liked being close to Hunter, feeling the warmth of his skin against mine. It made me forget everything that he did.

"How could you possibly think someone else can make you feel like this?" Butterflies erupt in my stomach.

Hunter's mouth was at my ear now, whispering.

"You must be crazy, Rosalyn Maria Edwards. There's only one person in this world for you." I felt his warm lips brush against my ear. Goosebumps raised on the back of my neck.

"Me," Hunter's lips crashed against mine.

I know I was angry at him 10 seconds ago. I know that I was ready to end it all. But right now, I don't care.

Hunter nipped at my bottom lip demanding entrance. One of hands were on my waist, pulling me closer to him.

I found my own two hands holding on to him, one on his shoulder, the other in his hair.

I don't fight back and argue, because Hunter was right. There is only one person made for him in this world.

me.

*        *        *

Hunter wouldn't let me see Greg. At least not first. He directed me to wait outside of the room while he uses his method.

His method including torture and violence.

"Hurting him won't solve anything. Why don't you just try talking to him first? He'll tell the truth. He's had time to think." My words went through one ear and out the other.

Hunter went back to being his grumpy self even after out moment.

They were now in one of those rooms where the insides looked like mirrors and the outside was a window. There was a table in the center, and at one point, Greg was sitting there.

I tried to break in. I tried smashing through the window. I even started screaming for help.

Hunter had no mercy, and Greg wasn't talking.

"Hunter!!" I bang my fist against the glass.

"Hunter!" I scream in our mind link.

'Please Hunter, you're not going anywhere. Just let me talk to him.'

'No.'

'Hunter' I beg.

'He's on the edge, he's going to spill.'

'But what if he doesn't actually know anything? What your doing is wrong, that you would care anyways. It's unnecessary. The real killer is out there. Greg most likely has no clue what is going on. He's framed. Why did you even bring me here if you aren't going to let me talk to him?'

As I was ranting, I didn'y notice that Hunter really did stop hitting Greg. The door became unlocked and out he walked.

Greg slumped against the floor, his clothes all bloody.

It hurt me so see him like that.

"You make me sick," I mutter between my gritted teeth.

"You weren't thinking that an hour ago," A smirk formed on Hunter's lips.

I gave him my death glare, but still turned my head away so he couln't see the blush on my cheeks.

"That was a one time thing."

"Mmhm," Hunter came closer to me, a devilish smile on his face.

"I'm serious."

"Mmhm."

"Stop mmhm-ing me!" I yell.

"There are rules. 1, not touching him." Hunter began talking, confusing me.

"What?"

"Two, you can only talk about the matter at hand." Wait, was he going to let me talk to Greg?

"3, no kind words are allowed to be used."

"That's unfair! There can't be two bad cops, now there's  got to be a good one. Me."

"You have 5 minutes." He said, opening the door.

"What! You tortured him for an hour! One hour of me banging on that freaking door and being ignored. I should get as much time as it takes for him to tell us what he knows. If he even knows anything."

"Just go," Hunter mutters under his breath. Walking in, I notice Hunter following behind me.

"Umm What are you doing?"

"I'm staying in here."

"Oh so now you care about me being safe. No way. You wait out there, just like I did."

"Are you comparing yourself to me?" Hunter asked, offended.

"Of course not, I would never insult my self like that."

I pushed at Hunter to make him leave, and eventually succeeded.

"Out!" I demand.

"Fine, but remember my rules!" When Hunter leaves and the door shuts, I stick out my tongue.

Although, all I could see was my reflection.

A deep chuckle followed by a cough caught my attention.

"Ow!" Greg moans as he attempts to stand up.

Even if Greg is stronger than me in general, in his weak state, there was no way he could harm me. Only him self.

I take slow steps towards him, deciding weather I should help him up.

Reaching down, I grip his arms and try to pull him up. As soon as I did that, there was banging at the door.

'Now you know how I feel.'

'You do know I can enter right now if I wanted to.'

Looking towards the locked door, I called his bluff.

'Do you think I'm crazy to lock you in a room with a criminal?'

I ignore Hunter, and continue helping Greg.

"You look like crap," I comment as we sit across from each other.

"And you look like an angel," He smiled.

It looked odd to see a smile on such a bruised and battered man.

"Greg, I-I need to know the truth. Please, we may all be in danger. If you can help us-"

"I can."

"You can what?" I ask slowly, making sure to hear every word.

"I don't know who the killer is, Rose, but I can help you find out who."

Leaning in slightly, I ask, "How?"

"Because they were after me, too."
