Nate handed one to Natalie, and as she watched Brian kneel to tie the bands, the penny dropped. The plan was for Nate to stand on the backs of their feet so he wouldn’t have to run, and they would ensure his moves were in sync to avoid straining any injuries.

Understanding the strategy, Natalie knelt to untie her and Nate’s shoelaces but struggled with the unfamiliar task. Just as she was about to ask for the teacher’s assistance, Brian had already finished one side and reached out to take over from her fumbling fingers.

As their hands touched, the warmth of his palm met her hand back, sending a jolt through her as if she’d touched a live wire. She instinctively tried to pull away, but Brian’s hand firmly held hers in place.

“Watch,” he said after a pause, looking up at her. His voice was soft, almost intimate.

Then, enveloping her hand in his, he guided her fingers as they continued to tie the shoelaces together.

Natalie watched their intertwined hands, feeling lost as he moved her fingers seamlessly. His palm felt hotter by the second, the heat unsettling her in a way she couldn’t explain.

Meanwhile, Nate squished between them and had no choice but to sit on the track, watching the two adults so focused on each other’s movements.
