Chapter.09 History Repeats Itself, But In Such Cunning Disguise.
Heart Of Maison
Nine: History Repeats Itself But In Such Cunning Disguise.
Was I hallucinating? Or was he here?
A stunning pair of blue eyes stared back at me with amusement dancing in his eyes. I didn't like the way he glanced at me, it made me feel self-conscious and nervous because of his intense gaze. Unhurriedly, I blinked and pulled myself out of the self-induced shock and clenched my fists, I had the strong urge to whack him.
Caleb Knightley was here!
I never thought I'd see him at my house ever again. But, lo and behold, he was stood in my home, presently, lips curved up in a slight smirk. My eyes shifted to Luke who was taking a video of us, and busy laughing his arse off, Rachel and Carter were still oblivious of their presence; they continued to dance and sing.
Luke finally, spoke, "We should've strictly come dancing, it would've been perfect."
Rachel and Carter's singing ceased immediately when they heard the new voice, they whirled around immediately.
My feet moved on its own accord as I was about to confront Luke, whilst the duo fast approached us in the opposite direction, Caleb already making his way towards where I was standing, I crossed over the table and neared the couch.
"Bloody hell I thought you said you couldn't come over!" Carter exclaimed.
"What?!" I whipped my head to the side and glared at Carter. My voice was incredulous and disbelief coloured my features.
It all transpired so quickly that I was too focused on confronting them busy having an ocular archery contest with my brother that I bumped my knee against the couch's armrest, the impact had me tripping and directly smacking into Caleb's shoulder. My hand quickly reached out and clutched the front of his shirt.
Bugger and blast! Uggh!
I scrunched up my face in pain, as I righted myself and wiggled my nose since it had taken the blow. I felt a warm hand on my left shoulder, unsettled, I peeled open my eyes deliberately, I looked up only to come face to face with magnetic blue eyes boring intensely into my brown ones, my lips slightly parted, and my stomach churned at the proximity.
That's odd!
I was still staring, I gulped inaudibly because my breathing was erratic, that was because I was singing and dancing of course. Not because of his intimidating gaze, which made my heart bungee jump!
I couldn't tear my eyes from his magnetic gaze, they were so fascinating that they buoyed me in place, his large pupils shrank back making the blue hues in his eyes resemble spindle wheels wrapping around them, making him stunning. His face was framed by luscious soft, short raven black hair which was pushed back, but it was still messy, he had well-defined strong jaw, straight long nose, my eyes slid to his lips, they were soft, pink and shapely.
O, you gorgeous specimen!
I couldn't help but think how he'd transformed into such a dish. It's like he had an evolution of some sorts and I couldn't help marvel at him. Gone was the shy little boy and in front of me stood a man. Intimidating. Nothing like the timid lanky boy I knew. He'd changed even more since the last time I'd seen him and that was only three years ago, of course, I'd changed as well, my hair wasn't dyed that ugly shade of purple-red, I now flaunted my natural dark brown locks.
But then my mind drifted to the last time we had met my face hardened and I couldn't stop myself from grinding on my molars. I was so busy intensely staring at him like a frumpy fool, that I nearly didn't quite register his pompous remark.
"I know it's been quite long that we haven't seen each other, but please don't embarrass yourself like this, Harper. Although, I must say I'm flattered," he said in a patronizing tone and put his arm around my shoulder like we were pals who hadn't seen each other in yonks.
It took me a while to register his thinly-veiled dig but when it did, I threw his hand off my shoulder. "Listen here pal," I began menacingly and took a step back, but the back of my knees got knocked over by the bloody armrest that I'd stumbled again, but this time backwards and landed on the couch sideways as I draped over the couch unceremoniously.
Could I get any more embarrassing? Ughh! If only someone had warned me that it was going to be even more embarrassing.
Damnation! I was beyond embarrassed. Why did this happen to me when Caleb was near?
And do you know what the conceited bastard said?
"My, my, how the mighty have fallen!" Caleb shook his head and dared to then smirk. "You were saying?" He mockingly lifted one brow.
My cheeks flared at the embarrassing hand I'd be dealt with. It didn't help my cause when Carter being the ever-loving brother he was cackled like a maniac and clutched his stomach because my fall was so hilarious.
Thankfully two individuals were concerned about me. Rachel and Luke were immediately beside me asking me if I was alright.
"Oh, my gosh, are you okay?"
"Are you hurt anywhere?"
Rachel and Luke both inquired at the same time. The worried look that was etched on their faces vanished when they'd eyed each other and a coy grin took over.
"What do you reckon?" I snapped. I shook my head and said, "no, I'm fine."
Which was an absolute lie, because I wasn't. I was mortified and utterly embarrassed, I wanted to change my name, dye my hair green and leave the country. Of course, I didn't tell them that especially not in front of Caleb. Rachel offered me her hand I didn't take it, instead, I wiggled my body until I was properly laid on the couch.
"Are you sure you're not hurting anywhere, Harp?" Luke asked me, his face came into my view, as he tried his best not to laugh.
"Only my pride," I mumbled.
"You could say that again cos that fall was epic! Better than Icarus's fall," Carter said breathlessly.
I was fuming mad and embarrassed but my brother chose to make fun of my misery but laughing his little bottom off.
"Shut up you stupid trout!" I reached for the throw pillows behind me and whacked him across his stomach, and oomph noise emitted from the back of his throat, but it was effective and that shut him up instantly.
There was an awkward silence and I could hear crickets chirping in the background.
Rachel cleared her throat demurely and touched my arm. "Hey budge up a little, I need to sit."
I twisted my lips to the side and got up so that Rachel could sit down, I placed my legs on the coffee table at the exact moment Caleb's hand reached out for the jammie dodgers. I narrowed my eyes at him, our eyes met.
We held each other's gaze, incapable of looking him in the eye because I was embarrassed and indignant, I twisted my lips to the side and snarled. "What makes you think you can come here and eat my food?" I was being bitchy, but I couldn't help it right now. "You are not welcome here."
Hurt flashed in Caleb's eyes, but he quickly masked it and his jaw clenched.
"I beg your pardon? What makes you think you can talk to my guest like that? I invited him over and he has every right to be here." Carter defended Caleb and handed him the jammie dodgers.
I was going to give Carter a piece of my mind when Lucas interrupted me.
"Now, now, children play nice and stop fighting already. It's been mere minutes since you've both met, but you're already at each other's throats," Luke clicked his tongue in displeasure.
The audacity of my cousin, to say those words, I gave Luke a withering stare he saw the look on my face and smiled sheepishly. I looked at him in utter disbelief, for not giving me a warning before, saying that he was going to bring Caleb along with him. He averted his gaze and pretended to have an interesting conversation with Carter.
My gaze flickered to Caleb's and a look of triumph crossed his features, as he munched on the scrumptious biscuits.
It's been nearly three years since I'd last met Caleb, but I had the misfortune of having met him while I was little. I was sixteen when we had what I thought was our last encounter, he was a tall, lanky fit bloke back then, slowly becoming a football star.
Chars and I had gone to Luke's games like we usually did, Caleb was new on the team. After the game, we stayed the night at the hotel to spend time the following day with Luke because that's what we did all the time. We hung out and later decided to play a friendly match of football. Chars, Luke and I were a team, Caleb and two other lads formed the other team.
Yes, I know there were only three people in a team, but that didn't matter to us, we just wanted to play.
As the game progressed, Caleb's teammates were leading up by two points. Our team sucked donkey's arse because Chars didn't know how to play, and neither did I. But unlike my horrid self, she was a decent player, my mind, however, wasn't in sync with my legs and refused to cooperate when I wanted it to run along with the ball simultaneously and kick it. It was so awkward because I fell multiple times and couldn't even kick the ball properly. Luke tried his absolute best to score, but he was no match for three blokes who played well.
It was one against three.
The score was finally 2-1, Luke managed to get one score.
I was Rachel Karen Green when it came to playing football. Utterly useless.
I wanted to change that and prove them wrong. I was determined to score a goal and tried to help the team. So, I ran across the field and stopped when I neared the goal post, my eyes scanned the turf and saw the boys tackle each other, and Luke passed the ball to Chars, but the ball somehow came hurtling towards me and I heard Chars call my name asking me to pass the ball to her.
I was slightly offended when she asked me to do that. Did she think I was that stupid and couldn't kick the ball when I was standing this close to the goal post? I would show them that I was capable of scoring a goal.
So, I whirled around with the ball still under my foot a feat that I'd picked up after countless attempts of keeling over, I stopped the ball with my leg when I neared the post and kicked it with all my might. I lifted my head to see if the ball made it to the goal and when the ball hit the side of the net, I jumped and fist-pumped the air and turned around.
Chars, Caleb, Luke, and the two other guys were gaping at me with utter shock and exasperation. I was confused and then Luke told me that it was the other team's goal post and I helped them win. I was so mortified, that I was embodying the Scream more proficiently than Edvard Munch's painting.
You'd think my horror was short-lived. Oh no, it'd only intensified when Caleb had to say something horrid to me.
Caleb swaggered towards me with arrogance snickering he'd said that he had never seen anyone suck at football so extensively it was hilarious to see myself trip and look so oblivious. He put his hand on my shoulder, giving me a pitying look but continued in a patronising tone telling me that I shouldn't play football again if I hated it so much and it would be better in my best interest if I played with dolls instead because that wouldn't make me trip on my feet or whinge like this.
I heard the other lads laugh, it was embarrassing, and I was bloody furious, which led to me getting a tad violent. Chars and Luke had to physically pull off of Caleb. It was very very mortifying. I was hostile back then cos I had issues. Gosh, I was mental, but now I've mellowed down a bit.
At that moment I'd painfully realised that he had thrown my own words against me. It was like karma.
I was brought out of my daydreaming when Rachel nudged me, I blinked and turned my neck to look at her.
"Are you sure you're okay?" She looked worried.
I nodded my head. "Don't worry I'm fine." My eyes flickered forward where Luke was watching our set on my MacBook, he'd insisted that wanted to see my performance.
"Okay. Should I introduce myself or...?" She trailed off gesturing towards the two new additions.
"What're you two whispering about?" Lucas' voice interrupted our whispered conversations.
"That why exactly you're still here Lucas," I answered glumly. I didn't understand why they're were still here in this room. They could just leave and get on with their business.
"Do you even have to ask that question?" He rolled his eyes. I wanted to say yes but he continued, "I'm here because I missed my favourite cousin-"
That's not what I meant, but alright.
"Hey, what's that supposed to mean?" Carter interjected looking hurt.
"-and also to celebrate your victory for advancing into the Finals of course. Congratulations, Harp. I knew you'd win." he said as he patted my arm then turned to Carter. "You're my favourite cousin, that's what I meant because you invited me."
"Thank you," I said dryly.
"Now," he turned back to face me, "won't you introduce your friend to us whose name I'd very much love to know." He glanced at Rachel and gave her a boyish grin.
Rachel jumped beside me. "Where are my manners! Let me introduce myself since Rebecca can't be bothered." Rachel eyed Luke and gave him a thorough once over. "Hello, I'm Rachel and it's an absolute pleasure to meet you." Rachel stretched out her hand with a coy and flirtatious smile.
Luke smirked and took her hand in his. "Pleasure's all mine. I'm Lucas and I think we'll just get along fine." He still held her hand and kissed the top of her hand like a gentleman.
"Oh, I know who you are," she paused but then looked at Caleb for a brief second and continued, "I know who you both are. It's lovely to see you in person." She flashed him a smile.
"Fab! And you have such a beautiful voice, and the video didn't do you justice." He began chatting her up, Rachel giggled and I watched in horror at their exchange.
I made eye contact with Carter and he was stunned as well, he looked at me as if silently asking what was happening, I just shrugged, stunned myself when Luke pointed something out in the video and complimented Rachel.
"I didn't know you sang so well. But why did you stop ballet, Harper?" Caleb spoke after a long time.
I heard Carter snort as soon as the question was asked. Both Caleb and I briefly glanced at Carter and then met each other's gaze. I promptly averted my gaze and felt myself flush when I remembered the reason and Carter didn't help when he was snickering and also I wasn't prepared for that question.
"I don't like it anymore," I grumbled.
*******************
"You didn't tell me you were related to a football superstar whilst being acquainted with the other. So what's going on between you and that Caleb boy? " Rachel fired questions.
"It wasn't a big deal-"
"Aca-Scuse me?! It is a big deal, Rebecca!"
"-Also I cannot believe that such an obedient shy boy would turn out to be like this."
"Who? Caleb?"
"Yes. Now he's acting like a stuck up, snobby, arrogant bastard! He's changed."
She hummed. "That's a bit excessive but from what I've read about him, he isn't like that but is cold and likes to keep everything private." But added, "well, as the saying goes: there is nothing permanent except change. No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man. You could not step twice into the same rivers; for other waters are ever flowing on to you."
I pondered upon the philosophy Rachel had thrown at me when she went all Oogway wise on me, whilst both of us were stood under the tree, waiting for the lads to come down. I was staring intently at the bed of lush green grass as I reflected what she'd said and what had happened today.
"...brother is such a dreamboat." I heard Rachel dreamy sigh, as she nudged me.
I was immediately pulled out of my thoughts, blinking I whipped my head so fast and stared at her horrified "Y-you think Carter's a dreamboat? What are you, a bloody paedophile? Have you seen him, what is wrong with you?" I cringed.
She smacked my arm rather hard and hissed. "No, you stupid trout! If you'd listen to me then you wouldn't have made that abominable suggestion." She shuddered. "I wasn't talking about Carter, I was talking about Lucas." Her gaze focused on the object of her desire and bit her lip.
"Lucas?" I asked in incredulity. Then I remembered that they were flirting back up there, and scrunched my nose when I realised she had called him hot. When in fact, he'd always reminded me of Sid the sloth from Ice Age.
I'm kidding!
I'd yelled out his name loud enough for him to hear. "Yes, Harp?" Lucas turned around, looking at me expectantly.
Rachel stomped my feet hard at the same time. I glared at her and she glared back. We had an ocular archery competition of sorts where she dared me not to open my mouth.
"Ouch!" I cried out in pain.
"All right Harp?" He inquired with concern.
Her pressure on my foot increased. "I mean, I'm fine and it's nothing, Luke." I grimaced and replied all the while glaring at Rachel. Luke just shrugged and turned around kicking a ball.
"You trollop, what was that for? Ouch!" I hissed at her when she finally lifted her yeti foot off my delicate sore one.
She twisted her lips to the side and sneered. "That was for exposing me and you deserved it." And walked away to the group of lads.
But she came running back towards me with fear on her face.
"REBECCCCCCCAAAAAH HOMEGA!" She screamed and hid behind me and nearly climbed my back like a spider monkey. "Huh huh huh HOMEGA huh huh!"
The reason for her erratic behaviour was Beasty. He was back!
Right now his current target was both Caleb and Rachel.
"Fucking hell! He looks like he wants to tear me apart!" I heard Caleb swear.
I wanted to yell: yes Beasty, get him!
But then Carter held Beasty back. "Beasty down boy! Heel! No no! Bad boy!"
I had a wee chuckle myself when Caleb let out a yelp. He saw me and sent a withering glare my way.
We were in the garden, and by the garden, I don't mean a tiny vegetable patch with flower beds. It was a yard. A huge one at that. Where Beasty was let loose, he had sniffed out the new individuals present in his territory and had come charging at them. Carter finally managed to calm him down and he stuck his tongue out panting.
Once Beasty was pacified and put away, Rachel slid down from my back and breathed a sigh of relief. "Goddammit, I forgot about that dog!" She huffed.
"Don't take it personally, he's that way to everyone. But he's family."
The reason we were all gathered out here in the garden was that Carter had suggested we go out and play football. I already had a bad feeling about this and knew he was baiting me, whilst the others agreed. I didn't want to, I knew this was going to be bad but Rachel insisted I join as well, so I complied. She was like this pushy yet annoying spirit guide.
The garden had two DIY goalposts on the opposite ends. Carter occasionally played football with his mates, so he'd asked dad to install one and he did. If you walked a little further into the canopy of trees, there was a little artificial pond with exotic fishes swimming around, beautiful sculptures and stone benches, lush emerald lawn, trimmed bushes with flowers studded on them and a pathway that led to a beautiful secret maze.
"Let's huddle and form teams!" Luke yelled.
I didn't budge and stood my ground. Rachel tugged my hand with one powerful force and dragged me against my will.
"If things get out of hand don't say I didn't warn you," I grumbled.
They formed groups, I made it clear that I wouldn't be taking part, but Rachel glared at me, I resisted, honest to God, resisted her, but she just wouldn't let me go. Luke picked Rachel to be in his team which left me utterly gobsmacked. Which left me no choice but to team up with Caleb and Carter, I already knew how this was going to end.
In that very moment, I knew for sure that history would repeat itself but not in such a cunning disguise where I couldn't detect the resemblance until the damage was done.
"This is so unfair. How could you betray me like this Luke fluke?" My tone was accusatory. I heard Caleb snicker when I called Luke by his nickname, earning a glare from Luke. I continued, "I thought we were family, blood is thicker than water. But I reckon blood isn't thicker when there is lust involved. I shall never forget this." I finished feeling betrayed.
I didn't want to part of Caleb's team for some strange reason he made me feel nervous and tense.
Carter had announced suddenly that he wasn't going to play and said he'd just be the referee to be fair. "I won't be playing and I'll be the judge to be fair and square as we're one player short."
That slimy slithering snake in the grass!
I sighed and slumped my shoulders. Great! Now it was going to be Caleb and I, against the two potential love birds. I didn't want to be a buzzkill, so I just played along half-heartedly. I stayed away from the ball, for the first ten minutes and a half-arsedly kicked the ball towards Caleb who somehow had managed to score a goal.
"Look if you're that averse to be playing on the same team as I just do me and yourself a favour and leave. I know how you play I should be the one to oppose playing on the same team as you." Caleb scowled.
I took offence. "Excuse you? What is that supposed to mean?" I scoffed, "I never wanted to play with you in the first place, you soulless fiend!"
He sneered. "Don't you remember that last time you played football? You're not helpful anyway, so that reminds me you still suck at the sport and I should never play football with you ever again." He turned around glaring at me and started to walk away.
Why you little...
I threw the ball at him and it hit him in the back. "I may suck at playing football, but I sure as hell don't suck at hitting you with it."
He simpered, but began in a patronising tone, "you're right, you should be pleased, that you didn't miss the mark when you hit me with it. At least that's an improvement."
"You absolute prick!" I screeched.
One could only imagine what transpired afterwards because Rachel had to physically remove me. My mother had to get involved and when she saw me getting dragged she was horrified.
Carter being the snitch he is, told my mum everything that happened between Caleb and I. Caleb and Carter fist-bumped each other laughing when they heard my mother discipline me. Of course, she was being dramatic even going to say I was unladylike!
That was absolute bollocks!
She even went as far as apologising to Caleb herself. She instantly recognized Caleb, and she fussed over him saying that he grew up into a fine young man. His mother was her client and her close friend as and they conversed with each other as if they were long lost friends.
This was why I despised meeting this prick!
They got along really well and my mum gushed about the fact that Caleb was a well-mannered gentleman. I snorted, she all but glared at me.
Only if she knew, pfft!
She made dinner for all of us. Ordinarily Mum rarely cooked, she never cooked even for my birthday and I looked at her in disbelief when she pranced around in the kitchen like she was some sort of domestic goddess.
"...she missed you terribly." I heard Mum whisper to Caleb.
I made my presence known by stomping into the kitchen, they were startled but my mother put on a smile and asked me to set up the table.
We were all sat on the large fourteen seater rectangular table which was laden with delicious food, like one big happy family. The chitchat never stopped and everybody seemed to enjoy it, Luke and Rachel were having a chinwag whilst I was grumpy the whole time. If I'm being honest, I appreciated the liveliness in the atmosphere, except for Caleb's presence of course.
"I cannot believe Rebecca displays the same behaviour as she did when you were little, I'd always reckoned she'd grow up and treat you better."
"Is that true ducky?" My dad looked at me with amusement.
I shrugged and smiled.
"At least the self-defence classes are paying off well then." He laughed.
My mother gave us both an admonishing look. "Don't encourage her dear." She then turned around to Caleb with glee. "I apologise on their behalf. I hope you like pea soup, have some more." She smiled.
My mother was Caleb's fangirl!
"Certainly!" He flashed her blinding smile. "Harper, can you please pass me some pepper?" Caleb asked me so sweetly, his voice was like honey.
"Get it yourself!" I gritted out.
"I would but I think I twisted my arm when you tackled me to the ground and-"
"Rebecca help the poor boy. I am so disappointed in you." My mother shook her head.
I opened my mouth to protest but she spoke, "Otherwise you can say goodbye to that car you want...." She trailed off
I gasped. She just did not go there. When I looked at her, there was this expression which said that she wasn't joking, I let out a low growl.
I ground on my molars. "Of course! Here," I smiled at him and shook the pepper shaker vigorously nearly emptying the bottle.
"Thank you, I think that's adequate. And can you please pass me some of the salad dressing Harper?" He was taking advantage and I could always turn this around.
I wanted to dump soup on his head so badly but since my mother was watching me like a hawk and my car was at stake I passed him the dressing and even poured excess amount of it.
"Of course. Do you want me to pass the gravy and dinner roll as well?" I hissed whilst keeping my smile on.
"Indeed. Can you please separate the olives, bread croutons, tomatoes from the salad and just leave the chicken?"
Was he being bloody serious? What was he playing at?
"Are you fucking mental? What're you trying to do?" I hissed.
"I'm asking you to help me. Help me or else you can say goodbye to that car just like your mum said...." He blackmailed me.
"Everything alright? Do you need anything?" Mum inquired across the table.
"Yes," I replied and flashed her a smile and got to pick out the things Mr Fussy didn't want in his salad.
"Awww, darling. You're being so considerate and helping Caleb with his salad," Mum gushed when she saw me pick out things from his salad. She wasn't done embarrassing me. "And all this time you were pretending to be horrid to the poor boy. Like I said, she was sad that day and she didn't stop crying-"
Caleb started coughing. It was the pepper taking effect.
I smiled wickedly.
"Heavens! Are you alright? Give him some water." Mum looked worried.
He whacked his chest and asked for water. "Harper pass me the water you've added too much pepper." He rasped.
Oh, he wanted water, did he? What else did he want? For me to hold the glass whilst he sipped?
Turns out that's exactly what he wanted that posh little wanker!
So I filled the glass and lifted to his lips and intentionally missed his lips it so that it sploshed and spilt around the rim and trickled from the sides of his lips and seeped into his shirt.
"What else do you want me to do now? Wipe your mouth for you? Here, let me wipe your mouth." I picked up the napkin and wiped his mouth. "Now that's done what else do you want? Feed you pudding?" I asked through gritted teeth but had this sinister smile on my face.
There was absolute silence then I could feel everyone's gaze on me. Cue the crickets chirping.
"Aca-awkward!" I heard Rachel cough.
Next, I heard a scandalised gasp. "Rebecca! Where are your manners? Apologise to the poor boy immediately! Now!" She was appalled and livid. "And go get him another bowl of soup."
I was fuming mad and let out a growl. "Excuse me!" I got up from my seat and left for the kitchen.
I am obeying orders for the sake of getting a new car whilst wishing for nothing more than for Caleb to choke on the food.
I lifted my head to see the posh little wanker leaning against the doorframe with a big fat grin.
"What're you looking at?" I sneered.
"I'm looking at your current situation to my heart's content." He bit his lip but a laugh escaped them.
"Why you little wanker!" I looked around for something to throw at his face. In return, he only smiled wider and two indentations appeared on his face which distracted me.
"Do you need help?" I heard his infuriating voice.
I slammed the cutlery and marched towards him and shoved him he leaned against the counter like a wilted flower. But he balanced himself with his arm. "A person should know when to stop. What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you have a bloody death wish? Don't test my patience, Caleb." I held his collar.
He was smiling. "Are you threatening me?"
"Indeed. Behave, or else..."
"You aren't in a position to threaten me, love. The only one who should be behaving right now is you, it's for your good. Wouldn't want mummy to know what you did now do you?"
I neared closer to him. "You finally grew some backbone didn't you?"
His lips tugged up into an evil grin and he closed the space between us. "You just found out." His face was close to mine and I noticed it a little too late, my stomach churned. "Old habits die hard but do you know what's changed about you?"
"What?" My eyebrows knitted in confusion and I was getting distracted because his eyes meet mine and those blues just consume me. I tried to dispel the sultry magnetism of those eyes.
"Mhmm," He let out in a really low voice, amusement dancing in his eyes, "you've certainly got tidy." I gulped when he brought his hand up painfully slow and then without warning suddenly pushed my forehead with his finger and moved to the side.
I was caught off guard and blinked.
"We should go or else your mother might think you murdered me with the soup bowl." He spoke and left.
I took a deep breath. "Well she wouldn't be wrong," I muttered and reached for the new bowl and cutlery.
"Hey Harper," I heard him call.
I looked over my shoulder with a glare. "Don't call me Harper you-"
He shushed me. "Is it true that you missed me?" He looked really serious now, no traces of any jokes, an unknown emotion etched across his face.
"-prick. And don't flatter yourself. I was glad you were gone." I said in a cold voice.
His jaw clenched. "So was I." Just like that he walked away.
At that moment I so badly wished to march up to Adam Remington's residence, borrow a lead tablet and take up my plea to the goddess Sulis. But instead, I settled for letting out a muffled scream.
