Chapter.05- You are such a disa-aca-pointment!
Heart Of Maison
Five: You are such a disa-aca-appointment!
Dating someone new is so fun and cute like haha this will either last the rest of my life or cut me open and end in pain and heartbreak that will make me nauseous for three months but it's just so fun and exciting not knowing haha!
So I chose to be blissfully dumb!
Four days!
It's been four days since Kayden confessed that he has feelings for me, it's been four days since I've admitted my feelings for him. There is this excitement that I have in me whenever I think about the fact, of us going out together. And I still can't get over the fact that I'm in a relationship. That thought made me feel heady and my heart sped at the thought.
".....Rebecca, hey are you even-?" Charlotte nudged me.
I blinked and looked at her. "Huh?" Gormless I faced her. "Sorry, my brain seems to have switched off." I graced her with an awkward laugh.
"Mhmm, I couldn't tell." She mumbled under her breath.
I narrowed my eyes. "What's that supposed to mean?"
She twisted her lips to the side and let out an exasperated sigh. "Really? Your brain has been turned off for the past four days ever since Kayden's confession and you're always on your phone texting, he's the only thing on your mind right now."
How could she tell that I was thinking about him? Was I that obvious?
"He's not the only thing on my mind!" I defended myself.
She gave me a pointed look. "Uh-huh, you tripped your way over here when you were laughing at something he sent you on the phone. I've never seen you so dazed like this before a competition, you're always so nervous that you're about ready to pass out soon or have an anxiety attack. Or the fact that I've been talking to you for the past five minutes and had to keep repeating everything thrice whilst you're just staring at your phone. Also, you've been smiling creepily for the past four days," she said smugly after tossing those hard-hitting facts at me.
"Aca-scuse me?"
"Aca- believe it!" She rolled her eyes, her voice laced with as much attitude as you imagine.
I winced slightly. Gosh! I am turning into one of those people. I shuddered as the realisation hit me and I put my phone away. I was doing all of the above, but I couldn't help it, it's often quite rare for your crush to reciprocate your feelings and have them notice you, most of them have this unrequited love for their crushes and they get disappointed when they see them with someone else other than themselves. Kayden's been texting me whenever he can and I'm still trying to grasp the reality of it all.
It felt like I had some sort of fluke when said he liked me. I was looking forward to our very first rendezvous, I even looked through my closet to find the perfect dress, something sexy, cute but also effortless which would make him fall head over heels for me, we'd hold hands even went as far as imagining my first kiss.
"Oh, for Christ's sake you're doing it again! I understand that you love the bloke but seriously in the name of all that is holy and acapella get it together, you're making me cringe." She gave me an aggravated glare.
"Oh, bugger off, Minty!" I huffed and folded my hands across my chest. She shook her head and left.
Since Charlotte was unavailable on Saturday when I wanted to disclose to her about the newest development in my love life, I called her the first thing in the morning and I all but shouted excitedly and told her about Kayden and I.
She was more awake when she heard the news, and demanded that I don't hide anything from her and give her thorough information. After I told her everything, she squealed and said that she was so happy and was gushing about the fact that I finally was in a relationship and was relieved that I wouldn't die alone with hundreds of cats, for companions.
Which I found offensive, but let it slide since I was in a fantastic mood.
Although she's happy for me, she'd been teasing me about it. Maybe she's right, I should tone it down a bit and not make people uncomfortable with my mawkish pathetic look, perhaps I was overdoing it.
Gah, I feel like a lovesick fool!
I was drawn to the present when I heard screams and applause, I blinked and my eyes scanned the auditorium, it was dark and only stage lights was on, which could blind a person. I was worried for a second there, I thought I was still dreaming about my love life and the girls had gone on the stage to perform without me. Fortunately, that wasn't the case, with a sigh of relief coursing through me, I concentrated on my surroundings.
That would've been aca-awkward!
Back to the situation at hand, we were waiting backstage at the New Wimbledon Theatre for the ICCA semi-finals. The Bristol Suspensions entered the stage and began performing, we were up next. But my eyes caught the Singing Trolls walking towards us.
"Trollops straight ahead!" Nicole nudged me.
They had this really strange get-up, they were clad in all black and had these ridiculous hats and the girls had some sort of veil net covering their faces as though they were attending a high profile funeral.
Were they going to perform to one of Lady Gaga's songs?
Was the first thing that came to my mind. Both the blokes and girls had dark lipstick and scary makeup on. They looked like a dark cloud of gloom and doom walking, perhaps they thought it was Halloween, but that wasn't in a few months.
I bit my lip from laughing out loud. But, Rachel being Rachel snickered, her shoulders shook and she clapped a hand over her mouth and a hiccuping noise escaped her lips. I whacked her shoulder before they could notice, alas two girls noticed us and glared at Rachel.
"Oi! What's so funny?" A girl with heavy makeup and curly blonde hair snarled. She looked quite scary with that makeup on and the lighting didn't help it one bit.
It felt like we were in a cheap horror film.
"Nothing it's just Rachel here is nervous so she gets hiccups." I tried to lie.
"You should be nervous, we are going to kick your collective aca-chav arse out there." A petite blonde haired girl butted in, who assumed that she was this arse kicker of all.
My eyebrows shot off my forehead. But Rachel spoke up, "How exactly are you aca-trollops going to do that? Perhaps by singing at a funeral?"
"Yes, if you don't shut up, it'll be yours, you minger!" The girl with curly blonde hair took a threatening step forward.
My mouth hung open at their exchange. Rachel's face hardened, she cracked her knuckles and inched forward. I held her back. "What did you say?" Rachel gritted her teeth and pushed my hand away.
Blimey, this is not going to aca-end well!
"This chavette is going to get pitch-slapped so hard that her ridiculous hat is going to concave and she won't know the difference between her hat and her head!" Rachel growled.
"Oi!" I heard Char's voice in the distance.
Well someone's in treble!
"Whoa, what do you think you're doing?" Charlotte rushed forward and put herself in between the two girls and glared at Rachel. She turned back and stared down at the garish looking girl as Chars was quite tall and spoke, "we're sorry, we will not fight with egoistical, rubbish chavsters and chavettes who get in our way of winning this championship." With that, she swivelled around and dragged a scowling Rachel with her.
"Aca-scuse me?" The girl gasped as if we threatened her Acapella way of life.
Since I am the yin to Charlotte's yang, I had to do something. "Aca-believe it pitch!" I hollered with as much attitude I could muster.
"Pitch please!" I heard one individual shoot back but didn't wait for their response.
I followed closely behind my friend. Charlotte scolded Rachel for picking up a fight with the rival team. It was common to get the opposing team riled up before the competition, but this was slightly different.
"I cannot risk getting disqualified because of your childish aca-politics. This is very important than your silly catfights! Do you want to fight them? Then pitch-slap them hard on stage through your performance, not through your fists."
Rachel sulked while Charlotte admonished her and I pitied her. I should've just dragged her away when I had the chance.
"I'm sorry." I apologised to Rachel who was standing in the corner brooding.
She slightly turned her head and glanced at me. "It's alright, blondie has a point I should've kept my mouth shut." She bumped her shoulders with mine, and added, "don't worry I'm fine. But you've got to admit that they look ridiculous in those costumes."
I grinned. "Gosh, they do, don't they! I suppose they're going to give us a Lady Gaga/Black Sabbathesque-like performance." I didn't know if that was even a word.
Rachel snickered. "Mhmm, cross between Lady Gaga and Black Sabbath is not bad, it's quite clever. But it all depends on the execution. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them bit off a bat's head like Ozzy." She cracked up.
"Oh, gosh that'd be epic!" I agreed.
Just then, the guy in charge of the microphones arrived and handed us each our mics as we were all huddled in the corner. "You lot are on in five minutes." He informed us.
That statement was enough to make me nervous. Sure I've performed before, but there was always a kind of jittery feeling whenever we performed. I took deep shuddering breaths to calm myself down.
Suddenly I felt my phone vibrate. I looked down at it and saw that it was a text message from Kayden, I smiled and opened it.
Kayden â£: Just wanted to wish you the best of luck before you go on stage. Don't be nervous. Break a leg ;) xx
A huge smile broke out on my face, that text made me calm down a little and I texted him back.
Me: Thank you. Suddenly I'm not so nervous x
Kaydenâ£: You're welcome. I'm glad I could help ;-). Talk to you later xx.
Me: Sure. I'll ring you after the competition :-)xx
I replied and turned my phone off. Feeling so overwhelmed and dizzy.
I put the phone in my bag and we waited for The Bristol Suspensions to finish their set. They were a co-ed acapella group from the University of Bristol. They were singing Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars. It was funny and a toe-tapper.
Chars cleared her throat and turned to us. She was the leader and I was second in command. She took a deep breath and had her po-face on. "Aca-huddle now pitches!" We all huddled immediately.
"Don't be nervous." That one was directed at Hannah. She continued, "forget all the aca-politics you've just witnessed. Give it your all and enjoy yourselves out there. No pressure."
I squeezed Hannah's shoulder and gave her a reassuring smile. She looked ready to faint. We nodded our heads. "Hands in pitches!" I called out and we all put our hands forward at the count of three just in time for the emcee to call out our names.
"Next up on stage, The Wrecking Belles! Please put your hands together for them, ladies and gentlemen." The crowd went rowdy at the mention of our group.
"Let's do this!" I said and blew out a breath. "Don't forget we will all come in and go out like wrecking balls!"
The girls hollered and we began walking.
"Don't trip on your way out." The voice sneered. It was the same girl from the Trolls earlier.
"Don't drop dead while performing out there," Rachel said with equal bite.
I heard gasps coming from them, but I pulled Rachel away and hurried off before another brawl broke out this time. Chars didn't hear this, so Rachel was lucky that she wouldn't get another scolding.
We all went on stage, the lights were off and one spotlight turned on, Chars counted softly and we started off with Jessie J's Bang Bang. Audrey, Nicole, and Jessica had solos and we just backed them up. Then we gradually transitioned to Price Tag, our choreography was on point, we moved around and then came and stood together as we sang in harmony Home by Michael Bublé, Emma hit the last note which indicated the ended of our set.
The entire auditorium resounded with thunderous applause. We took a bow and went backstage.
"That was one powerful performance by our leading ladies. Let's give them another round of applause, aca-ballers," the emcee said. Then he went on to announce the name of the next performer which undoubtedly were the Trolls.
"That was aca- amazing! I'm so chuffed, and you pitches didn't even screw up the last bit!" Chars exclaimed.
I rolled my eyes. "Indeed, I'm chuffed to bits as well," I said sincerely and we all gathered into a group hug.
"Hannah you did great out there!" Chars gave her a side hug. "You were brill!"
"Thank you I nearly pissed myself." Hannah who was still dazed half laughed and half cried.
We laughed and patted her as we made our way to our seats. Now we just had to wait for the winners to be announced. But not before watching the Trolls perform.
****************
The entire place was eerily quiet, exactly like before a Black Sabbath concert, you know before the lights come on and they start with the edgy bass and screaming. It was the same setting. It was dark, there was no movement whatsoever, smoke arose from the smoke machines giving it like a graveyard setting. I squinted my eyes to make out something or someone move.
"Do you think they dropped dead?" Rachel whispered next to my ear. I withheld a scream.
"Jesus Christ!" I muttered.
"Jesus Christ is right," I heard Charlotte speak on my other side. "Those aca-Trollops are barmy!"
It had been quiet for three minutes now and we could hear whispers and people grumbling. I was about to open my mouth but, suddenly the lights turned on, and a blood-curdling scream erupted from the stage. Maybe it was an operatic piece, but it was all chaotic.
"I think that person got stabbed in the back but instead of bleeding they're singing opera." Nicole stage-whispered. That earned a few snickers.
I yelped and put my hand on my chest, all black-clad silhouettes appeared on the stage, they marched, their heavy boots resounded across the auditorium, strobe lights of red and acid green flickered around making me dizzy and was enough to give me a migraine.
The music was haunting, a bloke started and it was heavy bass, and another began beatboxing. I looked at Rachel, her face outlined with the flickering of lights looked completely horrified.
"Dear God! They're recreating Black Sabbath and Lady Gaga!" Her mouth hung open.
"Indeed they are," I stated at the scene in front of me. I heard her titter up next to me.
They first sang Children of the Grave. It was comical and entertaining to watch them. It was all so dark, so we couldn't make out from here, but we were pretty sure that someone fell and we heard a muffled oomph and a thud. But that didn't stop them from singing or performing, so they continued their set and the audience encouraged them. They even sang Bad Romance by Lady Gaga and even finished it off with The Edge of Glory.
It was very entertaining to watch them perform and this was by far their best if I do say so myself. Sure, they botched it up in between when someone fell. Their previous performances were quite light compared to this, it was different. They always aimed at something fun, peppy silly and ecstatically happy, they were the embodiment of the Trolls. Looking at this performance, I think they aimed for some sort of satirical humour or dark and serious but they missed that when they failed to execute it properly.
Their set ended and people applauded, and us included. The Emcee came on and was stood there wide-eyed. "Bloody hell, that was pretty intense." He cleared his throat, "I mean give it up for... them." I heard some cheers for them.
The Trolls strutted towards us and sneered. Head held high up in the air, I admired their confidence if I'm being honest.
"Beat that, Wrecking Balls!" I knew that bloke, his name was Matt, he was in my Ancient Med class. He stuck his nose in the air and sashayed away. We just stared at them walk away.
"It's a Wrecking Belles." Rachel corrected. That fell on deaf ears.
"Belt up Matt! You are such a disa-aca-appointment mate!" One of the members hissed loud enough for all of us to hear.
"That's what your mum says about you. Don't aca-at me bruv!" Matt retorted.
"What did you say, mate?" The bloke that commented turned around.
"Oi! Shut your clanging cake holes! I almost died because of you sons of pitches when you pushed me." One girl argued.
I snorted like a little pig when I heard that, some of us laughed while Charlotte was the only one who sat with a po-face on and they continued to argue amongst themselves until there was an announcement.
The Emcee's voice brought us back to the present. "Alright, that was one of the last performances tonight. We'll declare the results in a few, so stay tuned aca-ballers." Was the last thing he said before he disappeared off the stage.
*************
The atmosphere was tense, anxious, and full of anticipation, so much so that you could practically feel it hum and roll off in waves from all of us. The last of the performances were done and it was time to finally announce the names of the groups who'd make to the finals. Everyone waited with bated breath, hoping that they would make the cut, to make it to the finals. But there was going to be simply three groups that were going to make it to the ICCA finals.
I wanted to win the Championship this year as well. We were the reigning champions for three years in a row, this was my second year and I hoped we could hold onto the legacy this year as well.
The EMCee first called out the names of those groups who were not going to make it. Then, it was time to announce the winners. Four groups were stood now including us and yes, the Trolls were in the lead too, shocking, I know. Each of us waited with bated breath and held each other's hands, some of them crossed their fingers with the hope that they'd make it into the Finals.
"The group in third place, and advancing to the finals is..." the EMcee began but paused for dramatic effect. After pausing for a whole thirty seconds, he opened his mouth. "The Bristol Suspensions with 340 points!"
The entire group hugged each other and stood a little far off still celebrating and after they were quiet the EMcee spoke.
"This was a close call for both these groups, now aca-ballers! The second runner up is..." Another long dramatic pause. "The Aquapellas with 359 points."
Damn! The Aquapellas from the University of Bath were our toughest competition, they were a co-ed group as well. This was making me so nervous and my palms started getting clammy, I inhaled and exhaled deeply.
Finally, the EMCee spoke and we all held our breath. "The moment you've all been waiting for, aca-ballers." He grinned and then looked at the cue card in his hand with a po-face. "The winner of the ICCA semifinals is..." I could feel my heart pound so loud, I thought it would fly out my rib cage. I wanted to strangle the bloke for making us wait.
After another three eternities of silence later....."The WRECKING BELLES! With an astounding 360 points," he declared.
Us girls erupted into loud cheers, squeals and we all gathered into a group hug.
"Congratulations ladies. Well done!! The winners will perform at the Beacon Theater, in New York for the ICCA finals. Good luck to all our winners. We thank the judges and audience for taking time out to attend this event and gracing us with your presence. Once again, I thank you and goodnight, see you aca-ballers next year. Peace!" The EMcee dropped the microphone, made a peace sign and left.
With that, the event concluded and the other groups congratulated us on our advancement into the Finals. "OM-aca-G we won! We bloody won!" Hannah exclaimed almost welling up. It was her first win after all.
Our baby belle Hannah White fit right in with us when she used aca and that made me gaze at her like a proud mum!
"Yes, we did! Well done pitches, I'm ecstatic," said Chars with a proud smile on her face. "Now we've just won the battle, we need to win the war! Let's covet the ICCA Final Championship this year as well!"
"Yes! Now, let's aca-huddle bitches!" Rachel screamed.
