Chapter 111
Strings of Fate
111- Recognition and reâevaluation When we finish eating, Aaron, Darrien and Bellamy clean up. Megan and I try to help but the guys refuse and insist that we sit and relax.
âYou cooked, we clean.â Bellamy insists. Well, far be it from me to argue if a handsome group of guys wants to clean up while we sit and chill. Still, by the time they finish, Iâm getting antsy. I want to hear what Aaron found out. Megan and Darrien have no idea what the meeting is for so Bellamy gives them a quick explanation. They seem a little confused at my extreme interest, but neither of them question my desire to help, which I appreciate. It suddenly occurs to me that Aaron, AARON is going to give a report. A verbal report. He is going to TELL us what happened? Thatâs insane. Surely he will have to speak more than a single sentence now! My plans are ruined when he pulls out a neatly folded piece of paper from his jacket pocket and hands it to me. I smooth it out to find⦠he TYPED out his report. I whirl to face him.
âYouâre doing this on purpose now arenât you?â I demand. Megan laughs.
âWhy would he do that?â She blurts out.
Aaron keeps his expression blank.
âExactly, why Miss Gale?â He says in a monotone. I roll my eyes and glare at him. After a second his blank expression breaks when his mouth twitches into a tiny half smile. I knew it. Bellamy seems amused as does Darrien. They all watch me expectantly.
âUgh fine.â I read out the report that Aaron gave me.
âThe home was blocked off with police tape as expected. I could not determine the species of the attackers but I was able to determine the same type of magical trace that was found after the vandalism at Miss Galeâs home suggesting the same type of magic was used to disguise it. There were signs of a struggle and it is also worth noting that the couple who were killed and the child did not give off human scents as the papers suggested but something else instead. At least one of the parents was a Witch, the other and the something different. Not Lare something common as I have not come across the scent before. I could not find any other evidence that would be useful to us.â I finish reading and drop the paper on the table. They have the same magic as the people who attacked my home? I glance at Bellamy, his 111- Recognition and reâevaluation expression is beyond dark. He is thinking something through and I decide to ask a few questions before he freaks out too much.
âIf you didnât recognise the scent, is it possible that someone else will? I donât know if being aware of her species will help us find the girl but it might be useful to be aware of her capabilities. We still donât know why she was taken after all.â Aaron gives a nod.
âYes itâs possible.â He pulls out another item from his jacket pocket. A small plastic ziplock bag. Inside is a scrap of fabric.
âFrom her pillow case.â he explains. I smile my approval.
âThanks. Maybe someone will recognise it.â He passes it around to everyone else in the room but they all shake their heads no, they donât know it. I sigh. Oh well, it was worth a shot.
âDoes⦠does that mean thereâs nothing we can do to help?â I ask quietly. Everyone at the table falls quiet and the silence hurts. Bellamy reaches out and grabs my hand.
âWeâll think of something, this is important to you.â I appreciate his effort to comfort although heâs squeezing my hand a little tight so I know heâs not thrilled right now.
âYou alright?â I ask. He gives a short nod.
âFine. Just reâevaluating your safety measures.â My brow furrows.
me, âWhat do you mean? I already moved in here, took time off work and agreed not to go anywhere alone.
What else could you possibly want?â I ask, a little horrified. He stares at me and clutches my hand in both of his.
âHow are you not more worried about this? He told us that the same magical traces we found at your house was found at the scene of a double homicide and kidnapping!â His voice is measured, I can see that he is actively trying to stay in control but the more he speaks the louder his voice is getting.
âThere are tons of potential explanations for that though. Itâs probably not the same person, itâs not even the same type of crime! They probably just purchased from the same store or used the same reference to do the spell. I agree we should be cautious, but letâs not jump to 111- Recognition and reâevaluation.
conclusions just yet.â I try to reason. The look Bellamy gives me tells me he isnât buying my explanation. To be honest, Iâm not sure I do either. If it was just the spell I would understand, but my weird dreams have me on edge. Something is up, I just have no idea what. He releases me, drags a hand through his damp hair and lets out an exasperated sigh.
gates to âRegardless, we need to be more careful. No more unnecessary outings, and if Iâm not home then Darrien or Aaron should be here. Itâs not likely that anyone could get past the gat our land but who knows what spells they have access to.â He decides. I sigh. I get the feeling thereâs going to be some debate over what counts as a necessary outing. But how mad can I be when there is someone out to get me? Would I rather he didnât care at all?
âI also need you to tell me right away if you have any more of those dreams. Wake me up if you need to, okay? I donât know if they mean anything or if itâs just because youâre anxious about all the but since youâre concerned I donât want to ignore it, just in case.â he states firmly. I give a small smile, grateful that heâs not dismissing my weird dreams.
âAaron, Darrien, You guys work out a schedule to make sure one or both of you are here when. Iâm not home. Nights should be fine but I still have to go out during the day occasionally. Youâre both welcome to make yourselves comfortable here in between times or take meals here. Does anyone have any further questions?â He confirms.
âYeah, I do. I need to go get some more of my stuff if Iâm going to be here for a while. Are you free to take me today or should I go with Aaron?â I ask. Bellamy shakes his head.
âMake a list, Aaron can go for you. You donât need to leave for something like that.â He orders. I cross my arms over my chest.
my âNo. That doesnât work for me. No offence Aaron, but I donât need some guy going through drawers looking for my stuff. Iâm not comfortable with YOU going through all my drawers, so why would I be okay with someone else doing it?â I point out. Bellamy looks torn between. understanding and being stubborn. I can tell that he wants to give me what I want, but the overprotective part of him wants to lock me in this house and not let me leave until he knows the danger is taken care of. I make eye contact with him and hold it.
