Chapter 143
Strings of Fate
143- Moving and managing I scroll through my contacts, dial Maggieâs number, then wait anxiously for her to answer. It rings so long that for a moment I think she isnât going to pick up and Iâll have to try again later, but in what I imagine is probably the last ring before it goes to voicemail, she answers just in the nick of time.
âHello dear, Iâm just working on a new scone recipe. So let me know if you canât hear me well. Iâve got you on speaker. But thereâs no one else here so you can speak freely.â She says cheerfully.
âOh, cool. Your scones are always amazing. Actually everything you make is amazing. Before I get into the reason I called, how are you? How have you been?â I donât want her thinking that I only call because I need to know something, she is my friend after all.
âOh sweetie, Iâve been alright. Logan is having a few issues at school though.â She adds. I frown.
âHow can he be having issues? He is so smart and well behaved, honestly he is practically the perfect child.â I ask confused. An awful thought occurs to me.
âWait, he isnât being bullied is he? Because if he is I will seriously need to find those kidsâ parents and throw down.â I practically growl out. Maggie laughs.
âNo, no. Nothing like that. Heâs a quiet kid, but his problem isnât with other students. He keeps getting detention after school. Since he ends up coming here late I called the school and looked into it. Apparently you get a detention if you turn up more than thirty minutes late to school, and an after school detention if it happens more than three times a week.â She sighs.
âAhh, I assume his lateness is Carrieâs fault?â I voice my suspicions.
âYes. I hate to say it, but she really isnât cut out to be a mother.â She admits, her voice full of disappointment.
âHave you ever thought about having him move in with you? He spends most of his time at your place anyway. I really doubt Carrie would say no.â Iâve met Carrie a few times, she prett much just ignores Logan and uses Maggie as free babysitting. She works and then spends her free time out with friends or possibly boyfriends. Sheâs not a bad person exactly. She doesnât usually completely neglect Loganâs needs. But he isnât her priority. I donât think she ever intended to get pregnant and never really grew up when she did.
âMaybe. But Iâm not sure this is the right place. I donât have a second bedroom. I would have to move, and even with my income from these places, I doubt I could afford a larger place in any decent area.â
She sighs.
âWell, maybe something will come up. Either way, Logan is lucky to have you.â I remind her.
âThank you dear. But now, what did you need to talk about? I donât want to bother you with all my problems.â She insists.
âPlease, always tell me about your problems, even if I canât help I can at least listen.â I promise.
âAs for why Iâm calling. Itâs about my living arrangements.â I start.
âAhh, youâre moving out permanently then?â She asks, no surprise in her tone at all.
âWell, I havenât really decided yet. Bellamy did ask me to stay here, but I wanted to know what you think about it first. He did also offer to help find you a new tenant.â I add, wanting her to have all the information. Maggie doesnât hesitate before responding.
âDear, if you decide to move back here when you could have a hot Shifter boyfriend in your bed every night keeping you warm, then you are dumber than I thought.â She says bluntly and I snort out a laugh.
I should have known that is how she would respond. She is a sucker for româcoms after all. Bellamy is grinning ear to ear and I poke him in the chest and roll.
my eyes. Well, I guess that answers that question. Really, I know I want to stay. When I went back to my old place, I felt uncomfortable. I can keep my friendship with Maggie and Logan without having to live there.
âOkay. Well, if you insist.â I tell her jokingly.
âOh I do. At least one of us needs to hook up with a hot guy, and since it doesnât seem likely âAnd if your Bellamy has some suggestions for tenants I will happily take them, but donât ixed worry too much. The place got up after the vandalism and there are always people. looking for cheap places to stay.â She tells me kindly. Bellamy is obviously listening to my call, he leans in close so that he can talk into the phone without taking it from me.
âThanks Maggie. I knew I liked you from the start. You should come visit us sometime.â He says cheerfully.
âOf course I will dear, you couldnât keep me away. Now take care of my girl, I need to get these scones in the oven. Bye you two!â We say our goodbyes and she hangs up with a click.
âWell, that went much easier than I expected it to.â I admit.
âReally? Because it went exactly how I thought it would go. Maggie cares about you, she only wants you to be happy. She didnât get upset when I scared off that guy on the day we met, if that didnât ruffle her, thereâs no reason this would.â He explains. I guess his logic makes sense.
âSo youâre going to move here properly, right?â He confirms. I give a slow nod.
âI suppose so, but I have to be allowed to help out with bills and stuff or I really wonât be okay with itâ¦â I add.
âWhich leads us back around to the issue of you going to work.â He says with a little frustration.
âPlease donât go back. Iâm begging you. If you have to quit I am happy to support you, honestly I would enjoy being allowed to provide for you.â He takes a quick breath then continues before I can object.
âIt doesnât mean you wonât work forever. Just please, wait until the murderers are caught. Iâve been thinking about it and if it makes you feel better I can give you more of my work, you can keep managing the mediation emails and Iâm sure I can find other things you could help with. If youâre taking some of my workload itâs only fair you get some of my income too.â He suggests eagerly. Huh, thatâs not the WORST suggestion.
âBut, if Iâm not technically the female Alpha, is it really right for me to be making decisions and answering emails and stuff?â 1 ask hesitantly. Bellamy seems elated and a little shocked when he realises that I am actually considering his suggestion. He quickly answers, probably worried Iâll talk myself out of it.
âI trust you to answer them, if youâre worried about authority you can just sign my name. When people eventually know about us you can use your name or set up a whole new system. Whatever you like.â
He insists. I frown.
âI canât just use your name⦠isnât that basically lying to everyone?â I object. Bellamy just shrugs.
âOfficial or not, youâre my mate. Iâm sure Iâve mentioned it before but Shifter mates are considered one hundred percent equal and are allowed to speak for each other. Even if someone did find out you were the one answering, once they find out the whole story theyâll accept it with no issues. Please? It wouldnât just be a few emails. I could find tons of other things that you could manage for me. My schedule is a chaotic mess and I constantly forget meetings. I bet you could figure out a way to get me on track too. Please? Iâm not just asking because I donât want you to go back to work, it really would legitimately be a load off my shoulders if you took over even a few of my tasks.â Okay, so how many times has Bellamy said please now? He really is practically begging. Itâs pretty obvious that heâs using this to sort of ease me into taking over the female Alpha role. But to be fair, he has been trying to do a job that is intended for two people, and he has been doing it mostly alone. I do believe him when he says he has plenty of work I could help him with. Iâm still not totally convinced that itâs right for me to sign his name on emails, but if heâs okay with it I guess I am too. Itâs not like I canât check with him if Iâm not confident in my responses. Bellamy is staring at me with pleading eyes and⦠is he holding his breath? I should probably answer before he actually.
