Chapter 144
Strings of Fate
144- Celebrate and catchâup âOkay.â I answer simply.
âOkay?â He asks.
âAs in youâll quit your job and work here instead?â he clarifies. I nod firmly. My decision made. Bellamy picks me up by the waist and swings me around. I squeal in shock.
âBellamy!â I laugh. He places me back on my feet and leans in to give me a quick k*ss.
âThank you.â he says sincerely.
âYou donât need to thank me. You offered a fair compromise that we can both live with. All I de was meet you halfway.â I remind him. He shakes his head stubbornly.
âNo, you can argue all you like but we both know that realistically I am the one getting everything I want. Iâm not giving up anything.â He points out. I shrug.
âI Canât promise this arrangement will last forever. Once the killer is caught I will in all likelihood want to get another job. Iâm still not sure I feel right living off your income. But if I were to go to work, I suspect you would send so many guards that paying them would cost several times more than my living expenses anyway.â I explain with a grin. Bellamy just winks at me.
âPerhaps, I might. Okay, yes I definitely would.â he admits.
âI knew it!â I cross my arms over my chest and mock glare at him. He just grins at me, hist good mood apparently impossible to dent. Until it isnât⦠his smile dulls slightly.
âI know this isnât how you would have liked everything to go. Moving in here because some psycho is threatening you, leaving your job and taking over parts of a role you never signed up for. I⦠Iâm sorry.â
He frowns. Oh, he must be feeling bad, he actually apologised. I shake my head with a sigh.
âDonât think like that, things will always happen that we didnât plan for or volunteer for, we 144- Celebrate and catchâup just make the best of it, and sure, things happened differently that I might have anticipated, but itâs not like I had no choice. This is as much the result of my own decisions as it is the situations that Iâve found myself in. Donât apologise when I know youâre doing the best you can. Itâs not like youâve done the wrong thing.â I remind him. He stares.
âYou are far too accepting. Okay, instead of apologising, Iâll just thank you again. No matter what you say about getting a new job later, you have to know that Iâm hoping youâll enjoy your role here and want to take on the rest of it.â He reminds me. I nod.
âYes, I figured. I suppose thatâs a possibility too. We will just have to see how things turn out. I donât think Iâll miss my job too much, but that doesnât mean this one will be any better.â I point out. Bellamy nods his acceptance.
âSoo⦠will you call and quit your job now? I can arrange for people to go fetch the rest of your things. It might be a little late today, but Iâm sure they can get it all tomorrow.â He says.
confidently.
âWhy the rush?â I ask. Bellamy shrugs.
âLess time for you to change your mind?â He suggests. I roll my eyes.
âIâve made up my mind. Iâm about as stubborn as you are, I doubt Iâm going to change it. again so easily.â I remind him and he smiles again.
âFair enough. Will you call and quit now then?â He persists. I laugh and roll my eyes.
âOkay, okay. Relax.â I placate him.
Amber answers on the first ring when I call Borderline.
âCongratulations!â She says in way of greeting.
âUh, thanks? Um⦠Amber⦠What are you congratulating me for exactly?â I ask, a little confused.
Honestly, when she skips part of the conversation I sometimes find myself asking the questions where with anyone else I would expect it to be the other way around.
âFor escaping- I mean, moving on from this nightmare of a place.â She says cheerfully. I 144- Celebrate and catchâup frown.
âI mean, thanks? But Amber, I didnât know you disliked it there so much.â I observe. I can practically feel her shrug through the phone.
âItâs not where I want to stay forever. I like the type of work, but I think I would rather manage my own place. Somewhere smaller and less prissy.â She informs me.
âHuh, that would suit you I think. Do you think youâll do it one day?â I ask.
âI hope so. But it takes a lot of money to start something like that. Iâm saving, but itâs not easy. I canât even gamble for it. Oracles arenât allowed to participate in games like that for money. No one would bet against us anyway so itâs useless.â she sighs. I laugh. Sheâs right, I would never bet against her in cards or any similar game.
âWell, I hope you manage it. Let me know if I can help you with it at all.â I offer.
âI will. I suspect I will end up taking you up on that offer someday. And good luck to you too with your new job. Anyway Iâm working tonight so I wonât be able to make it for dinner, but thanks for thinking of me. Let me know how it all goes.â She says, clearly starting to wrap up the call.
âDinner? What⦠I didnât invite you to- oh nevermind. Bye Amber, thanks for everything and Iâll talk to you later.â
âBye Ry.â She hangs up with a click. Wait, did I actually quit? I donât think I ever said it⦠oh well. She got the idea. Iâm sure Amber will make sure everything works out. Sheâs good like that. Bellamy is rocking back on his heels, practically bouncing in place.
âIâm going to make some calls. Arrange for all your stuff to get picked up tomorrow. Do you particularly want your furniture or should we leave it behind? I mean this place is obviously already furnished, but if youâre particularly attached to anything Iâll make sure we can find a place for it.â He rambles, already heading for the door.
âUh, no I donât need any of it. Itâs all cheap stuff anyway. Maggie can keep it and rent the place out furnished if she likes.â I push my damp hair out of my face and follow Bellamy downstairs. He heads to his office and starts making calls and I settle into my recliner. My phone vibrates with a message from Harry. I swear itâs like the guy knows whenever something interesting happens and suddenly inserts himself into my life so he can catch up. on the gossip.
Harry- Hey Ry! I was just thinking that we should catch up. Like, in person. Do you have dinner plans?
Ryann- I donât have plans, but give me a bit to chat with Bellamy. I donât know if he has something planned already. Itâs been a long day.
âHey Bels? Harry wants to hang out tonight.â I tell him casually. Bellamy scrunches up his face in distaste.
âReally? But Harry is so⦠heâs just soâ¦.â He trails off. Clearly not sure how to answer me without insulting my friend. I raise an eyebrow and wait. Bellamy is saved from answering by Megan walking in.
âHey Ry, youâre looking better. Did I hear something about Harry? Is he coming overâ I would love to meet him properly in person. We talk so much, it would be nice to have a better picture of him.â She says cheerfully.
âThatâs what weâre just trying to figure out. Harry wants to hang out tonight, what do you think Bellamy?â I ask. He frowns.
âDoes he have to come here?â He says with a half groan.
âWell you donât want us going out anywhere.â Megan reminds him snarkily.
âWe could all go, it would be safe if you and Darrien came along right? Please?â I ask, batting my eyelashes at him. Megan catches on and chimes in.
âYeah Bellamy, come on. Iâm sure it would be a nice distraction for us all.â She adds.
Oh! And it can be a celebration of my leaving my old job!â I throw out. Okay, that might be at low blow, but I suspect it will work. I can see Bellamy is wavering. He gives in with a sigh.
âOh fine. We can all go.â He says reluctantly. Megan squeals in excitement and I grin. I should.
144 Celebrate and catchâup invite Amber too. Oh, wait, no. She already turned me down. Well, I guess she can come next time. I text Harry back.
Ryann- Spoke to Bellamy and Megan. The winning suggestion right now is that the group of us go out for dinner (Darrien too!) I quit my job today, itâs going to be a celebration dinner.
Harry- Excellent. I know just the place. Also CONGRATS!
