Chapter 146
Strings of Fate
146- Brats and bartenders âSo, how are you all enjoying playing house? I think I might be a little jealous, living all by my lonesome.â Harry says, his tone full of false sadness. Megan rolls her eyes.
âLiar, you love living alone.â She accuses. Harry shrugs.
âTrue, I have always enjoyed my bachelor pad. No women.â He jokes. Darrien raises an eyebrow.
âI doubt that.â he mutters grumpily. Megan elbows him and Harry just winks.
âI prefer not to bring women back to my place. Too much chance of them finding their way. back again.
Itâs better they donât know where I live.â he comments. This time, both Bellamy and Darrien look at him in disgust. Shifters apparently arenât into that whole lifestyle. I suppose it makes sense. They mostly live in large family groups. Bringing home a different woman every night probably doesnât work as well when you live with your parents, grandparents, siblings and other relatives. I decide to intervene before the guys decide they hate Harry before they know anything other than his more shallow side.
âYou just like having your own room. You always said as a kid that you would never share a room again when you became an adult.â I remind him. Harry shrugs.
âShare a room with five other guys and see if you ever want to share a room again.â He points.
out.
âYou and Ryann grew up in the same place, right?â Bellamy asks. Leave it to him to instantly pick up on the chance to ask questions about my childhood.
âYep. She was just as much of a bossy brat then as she is now.â Harry answers. I glare at him.
âHey, rude!â I object.
âWhat do you mean by that?â Megan asks. Harry leans in, elbows on the table and lowers his voice like heâs sharing a secret, or at least some really good gossip.
146- Brats and bartenders âShe used to parade around organising the other children and making sure they got along. She was practically queen of the playground. At least until we hit our early teens⦠then things changed I guess.â
He stops, awkwardly, clearly not sure what else to say.
âThus begun my awkward loner years. But thatâs over now too so thereâs no need to worry about itâ I conclude, putting an end to the topic. Our teenage years were about the time that Harry and all the other Incubi came into their own magic. The home we lived in was about eighty percent Incubi and Succubi. They have a tendency to leave unclaimed children behind, more than most. Their abilities donât work on eachother. So The Incubi all suddenly began paying a lot of attention to me. But since I could see their strings I always rejected them which didnât leave me very popular. The Succubi didnât appreciate that all the guys would give attention to the nonâSuccubus girls so they didnât like me either.
There were other kids there, but most of them moved to other homes as they grew up. Shifters almost never end up in group homes, theyâre too family oriented. Witches and their covens also tend to take care of each otherâs kids. Children with Oracle abilities are usually adopted young because theyâre pretty rare and most people THINK that they want to know the future. Theyâre usually wrong, but at least the kids find families. Straight up Human kids have separate homes they go to. Which pretty much just left me as a loner. I spent a lot of time reading and working as soon as I was old enough so that I would be able to move out at eighteen. Iâve moved on from that time though and I really donât want to talk about it over dinner.
âUhh⦠Ry, you never answered the original question. How are you enjoying living with us? On my part Iâm loving it. I enjoy having you around all the time, even if it is only temporary.â She rambles uncomfortably. I notice Darrien nudging her arm in what I suspect is intended as a comforting motion.
Great, I made everyone feel awkward. Bellamy sits up straighter at her comment though. I look up at him and he is looking back at me, an eager expression on his face. Ah, I get it. He wants to share the news from today. I give a slight nod.
âOh go on. I know you want to.â I tell him. He beams at me before turning to the rest of the table.
âRyann agreed to move in permanently!â He blurts out. Megan squeals in delight and claps. her hands together.
âWhen did this happen? Why didnât you tell me?â She demands excitedly. I smile and answer.
âJust this afternoon. I didnât get around to telling anyone yet, but Iâve spoken to Maggie and Bellamy said heâs arranged for someone to get the rest of my stuff tomorrow.â I tell her. She 140âBrats and bartenders looks absolutely thrilled.
âCongratulations to you both. I suppose I will continue seeing you around then.â Darrien remarks, a pleased smile on his face. Hmm, if Shifters live in family groups, I wonder if he will move in with us too someday. I know he mostly lives alone right now, Bellamy mentioned once that he moved here a few years ago without his family. I think heâs mostly on his own. I donât think itâs super common for Shifters to move away from their families unless they donât really have one. I think Iâm actually looking forward to it.
âI suppose that means itâs been going fairly well, good for you both I guess.â Harry comments. He looks a little down and kind of distracted. He perks up all of a sudden.
âIâll have to get you a housewarming gift. Youâll have to invite me over for a proper housewarming.â He says cheerfully. Heâs talking to me, but heâs watching Bellamy, clearly hoping for a reaction. Bellamy scowls for a second, then smooths his face over and answers. for me.
âIâm sure you will be able to come visit sometime.â He answers, only a hint of reluctance in his tone.
âWonderful. Now have you all picked out what you want to eat? I can go place our orders. Cam should be working and I want to⦠say hi.â He says with a smirk. Megan picks up on his sudden change in attitude.
âCam? Who is Cam?â She asks eagerly.
âThe bartender here.â He answers plainly. Megan and I both immediately sit up in our chairs. and stretch around, trying to see the bar, annoyingly we canât see much from where weâre sitting.
âYou mean THE bartender?â I ask pointedly. I swear Harry blushes a little and I canât help but giggle.
He rolls his eyes.
âYes, the bartender.â He answers. Megan exchanges excited glances with me. Bellamy and Darrien both look confused.
âIs there something special about this particular bartender?â Darrien asks, trying to make 146- Brats and bartenders sense of our excitement.
âDefinitely.â Megan responds with a grin.
âWe need to meet her.â I declare. Megan nods eagerly.
âOh we totally do. We can go order the food.â She offers, already halfway out her seat. Darrien and Bellamy both frown.
âIâll pay for dinner. Sit back down.â Bellamy insists. Megan drops into her seat with a pout. Darrien looks a little disheartened. Iâm guessing he wanted to get dinner for Megan.
want to âDarrien, maybe you could get the drinks?â I suggest. Iâm kind of annoyed at my own suggestion because I want to go to the bar and meet Cam the bartender, but I al cheer Darrien up.
âOh no, no way. Iâm getting the drinks. This is my usual drinking joint and coming here was my idea.â
Harry insists.
âYou just want to hit on the bartender.â Megan mutters.
