Chapter 17
Strings of Fate
17- Black and blue This time the suit is plain black. It looks better and Bellamy seems happier. He is wearing a black shirt underneath. He shrugs at me.
âWell?â he asks. I consider a moment.
âItâs very⦠black.â I observe. Bellamy raises an eyebrow.
âItâs a black suit.â he points out.
âI can see that, but⦠itâs just⦠I donât know. Itâs better. But not right.â I turn to Charlie for assistance.
He is nodding along with me.
âSheâs right. I have an idea.â He stands and vanishes yet again. When he returns he is holding two more shirts. A plain white one and a maroon one.
âTry these with it.â He hands them to Bellamy. Bellamy sighs in frustration and returns to the dressing room. My phone vibrates in my bag and I pull it out. Itâs a message from Megan. She has sent me the photo of me in my dress that she took earlier.
Megan- Send me mine!
I text her the photo of her dress and she sends back her thanks. I flick back and forth between the two photos. Happy to have some kind of evidence that I got to spend the day with my friend. Charlie glances over my shoulder and sees the picture of Megan.
âPretty girl and thatâs a nice dress. Is that the sister? They look alike.â He asks. I nod.
âYep, she and I went dress shopping today.â I tell him proudly. Bellamy steps out again wearing the maroon shirt this time. Charlie shakes his head and waves him back to the change room before turning back to me.
âDid you get a dress too darling?â I nod and flick to the photo. He leans over to look at it eagerly. He gasps.
âOh my, I know what we need!â he stands and dashes off. Bellamy emerges again in the white shirt. He is looking at me curiously. I shrug, I donât know what just happened. Charlie comes running back with another shirt. A blue one this time. The same blue as my dress.
âNo, the white is terrible, you look like a pissed off penguin. Quick, put this one on!â He demands.
Bellamy glowers and takes the shirt. Clearly he is not enjoying himself. Charlie plops down next to me again.
3 âNow you two can match.â he says proudly.
âUhm⦠Charlie. Bellamy and I arenât together, you know.â I inform him. Charlie just shrugs.
âThat doesnât mean that shade of blue wonât be perfect on both of you.â He waves away my objections.
Bellamy steps out of the changing room and I have to admit that Charlie was right. The blue looks great. The dark colour suits Bellamy but isnât too harsh the way the plain black outfit was, Charlie stands and claps his hands together happily.
âPerfect, just perfect!â he declares. Bellamy glances at me.
âWhat do you think Ryann?â I nod my agreement.
âI like it.â I confirm. A ghost of a smile spreads across his face.
âDoes that mean I can change back now?â he questions.
âOf course handsome. Go ahead. Iâll pick out a tie for you and ring it all up.â Charlie promises. He fetches a black tie to match the suit and when Bellamy returns back in his normal clothes, Charlie finishes the sale. We make our way to the exit.
âWell, it has been a pleasure. I hope to see you both again sometime soon!â Charlie gushes. Bellamy grimaces and I laugh.
âThank you Charlie.â I really appreciate how much Charlie clearly enjoys his job. Sure, he was probably a bit too open in ogling his customer, but I guess he knows what looks good. Clearly he is living his best life. Actually, he was pretty good company. I wonder if he would think Iâm weird if I stopped by to say hi next time Iâm in the area. Wow, I make one friend and suddenly I feel like I can talk to people and socialise. Megan is definitely doing wonders for my 17- Black and blue confidence.
Bellamy looks exhausted.
âThat was way too stressful.â He complains.
âYou only had to go to one store. It took less than half an hour.â I remind him. He shudders.
âMegan had better be happy. Hey, what did he mean when he said we would match? Your hair?â he questions. I shake my head.
âThe dress Megan helped me pick out is that same blue.â Bellamy raises an eyebrow.
âOh? Alright then. I guess Iâm not really surprised youâre wearing blue.â he mutters. I ignore it.
âSo now what? Itâs almost four. What time is Megan meeting Tristan?â I ask.
âFive thirty. So we have time for an early dinner before we go follow them.â He decides. Well that was a little bossy, but itâs a good idea so I donât say anything.
âHow do you feel about Indian food?â He questions. I light up.
âI adore Indian food.â It only takes a few minutes for us to reach the restaurant and get our food. So far today, Bellamy hasnât actually been too awful, which is a nice change, so I decide to attempt some kind of conversation and hope this dinner goes better than the last one.
âI still donât really understand why you wanted my help picking out a suit. Charlie did most of the work.â
I point out. Bellamy shrugs.
âI didnât want to have to talk to the shop assistant more than absolutely necessary. You helped keep him occupied.â he explains.
âWhy didnât you want to talk to him?â
âHeâs not a Shifter.â he shrugs. My temper flares 1. up.
17- Black and blue âI am completely regretting helping you right now. Do you really think Shifters are so much. better than everyone else? Because if so then I think Iâm going to have to find a way to help. Megan on my own.â
Bellamy looks frustrated again.
âI donât think weâre better than everyone else. I do think it is best if we keep to ourselves.â
âBecause you think youâre better than us.â I add.
NO he practically growls out the words.
âItâs just better that way. NonâShifters think they can accept us, but the reality is we are part animal and that freaks people out. We have different culture and rules, different instincts and most people canât cope with that. They fear us, or are disgusted by it. They donât understand us and so they judge us by their standards which just doesnât work.â Bellamy pauses and meets my eyes.
âYou got upset after sharing just one meal with me.â he points out. I glare at him.
âAnd yet here I am the very next day having a second meal with you. All it took was a little explaining and Iâm trying. Maybe you should let other people have that chance too.â Bellamy shakes his head.
âYou still see us as just unusual humans. You havenât seen any of us shiftâ he points out. I am totally confused. Why should that make a difference? I already know heâs a Shifter. Shifters turn into animals.
Itâs not like it would be a surprise.
âI donât understand.â I admit. Bellamy sighs.
1 âSome things are easy to accept until theyâre right in front of you.â I lean forward onto the table.
âThis entire discussion is exhausting. And stop assuming you have any idea what it is that I think of you or any other Shifter. I resent that you think my opinion of Shifters would change based on what they look like at the time.â What does Bellamy look like when he shifts? Iâm actually rather curious. I doubt he would show me, but maybe I could ask Megan about it. Although Iâm not sure Iâm subtle enough to ask without being incredibly obvious. A loud giggle at a nearby table catches my attention. A teenage couple are on a date and the girl ist 17- Black and blue laughing as what is sure to be some silly comment the guy made. Bellamy follows my line of sight to see what Iâm looking at.
âThatâs cute.â he comments with a slight smile. I guess Megan was right when she said Bellamy was the romantic type. I shake my head.
âTheyâre doomed. Thereâs a black thread between them. This is clearly not going to end well for them.â
I sigh. How depressing. Bellamy shrugs.
âThat may be so, but right now theyâre happy.â he sounds like he is trying to cheer me up. Itâs odd, but I appreciate the effort. I look away from the teens and give him a halfâsmile.
âI guess youâre right.â We continue our meal in a relatively comfortable silence.
