Chapter 184
Strings of Fate
184- Lifeless and lawn The hour and a half that it takes for Alex to gather all the necessary information is somehow the longest hour and a half of my life and the shortest all at the same time. It drags on but is also over far too quickly. We all head downstairs to get ready to leave and meet the others.
âOkay, so Darrien and Aaron will stay here with you guys and we will call you as soon as we have them.â Bellamy announces his plan confidently. I make eye contact with Megan who looks just as sceptical as me. Does he seriously think weâre going to just sit here and wait?
âYeah, no. Thatâs not going to work for me. Bellamy you canât seriously think weâre just going to sit around here and wait. Weâre coming with you.â I argue. Bellamy shakes his head adamantly.
âAbsolutely not. Itâs not safe.â He refuses. I roll my eyes.
âItâs not safe for you either.â I point out. Bellamy crosses his arms and stares me down.
âYou canât fight.â He argues.
âI donât need to fight to be useful. I can keep a look out, or help with communication. Not to mention, Kiara will hopefully recognise my voice. Sheâs going to need something familiar and Iâm the best weâve got.â I tell him stubbornly, holding his gaze in the way only I can manage. I know Bellamy can see my point, but he isnât giving up yet.
âYouâll distract me. Iâll be too busy worrying about you.â He insists. I shake my head.
âYouâll worry either way. If you didnât want me around, you shouldnât have asked me to work with you.â I glare and Bellamy lets out what sounds almost like a growl. I take pity on him and relent just a little.
âIâm not saying I need to be in the middle of the action. Iâll wait in the car. You can call me in when you need me.â I suggest. He still looks kind of pissed off but he gives a stiff nod.
âFine. But you WILL stay in the car.â His eyes flick to Megan.
âBoth of you. Aaron and Darrien will be staying with you. I donât care what happens, you will NOT get out of the vehicle unless I say so.â He orders. Eh, close enough. I know heâs just worried about me so I nod my agreement and I hear Megan agree too. Darrien doesnât seem thrilled with the agreement either. He and Bellamy exchange a look that clearly says; âSeriously, what are we even doing with these stubborn women? We make our way out to the car, Bellamyâs hand tight on my hip. I can hear Megan and Darrien bickering. Apparently he is trying to convince her to stay home, and when that fails, he begins lecturing her about the dangers of leaving the car. Or making noise. Basically of doing anything at all.
Itâs super quiet outside and there is practically no traffic on the roads at all. What time is it anyway? It was already getting late when we sent everyone home. I would guess itâs about midnight. Maybe just after. We pull up in front of a totally normal house in an average neighbourhood. I know there is no reason why there would be anything wrong with the house, but I still pictured it as old or decrepit. I wanted to see it dirty and falling apart, in disrepair like a villainâs house should be. Shouldnât there be some outward sign of her slowly losing her mind and falling apart? I almost think I would feel better if I knew that Cheryl was not in her right mind. But no. The place is boringly normal. Maybe the grass is a little overgrown, but no more than anyone elseâs lawn on the street is. Bellamy repeats his order for Megan 184- Lifeless and lawn and I to stay in the car, like we didnât hear it the first dozen times he said it. My face is pretty much plastered to the window along with Meganâs as we watch Bellamy and five other guards, including Shaun, quietly approach the house. I see them test the handle on the front door, then without warning, one of the bigger guys kicks down the front door in a smooth movement and they all go streaming inside. Then⦠nothing.
âUgh, waiting in the car sucks. We canât SEE anything.â Megan complains.
âItâs for your own safety. Tristanâs mother has just as much reason to hate you as she does Ryann.â He reminds her.
âI know, I know. But that doesnât make this less frustrating!â She continues.
âI get it. Itâs a shame we donât have cameras or something. Ooh, we could have wired everyone up with like, b*dy cams. Then we could have watched. Something to remember for next time something like this happens. I bet Alex could do it for us.â I point out. Megan nods seriously, but it only takes a few seconds for her eyes to dart back to the front door which is still hanging open. Her anxiety is putting me on edge too, even though I have every confidence in Bellamy and the others.
âShould it be taking so long?â I ask, bouncing in place. Aaron shrugs.
âIt depends on if she was the only one in the house. Relax if you can. As soon as itâs safe, Alpha Kane will call for you.â He assures me. I donât feel any better. In fact Iâm starting to feel worse. Something is wrong. I just know it. I sit and try to focus on keeping my breathing even. My heart is racing which is just ridiculous, all Iâm doing is sitting here!!
Finally, FINALLY, I see Bellamy emerge from the house. Iâm out of my seat and flying out of the car before anyone can so much as blink. I didnât even know I could move that fast. 1 fly into Bellamyâs arms and he catches me. After a moment I step back and look him over. He seems totally unharmed which is a good sign.
âYou were meant to wait for me to say itâs safe to get out of the car.â Bellamy objects. I roll my eyes, âYeah, sure. How did it go? Do we have Kiara?â I ask. Bellamyâs face turns grim and my stomach twists.
âWe found Cheryl. She was asleep and didnât really put up a fight at all. But Ry⦠there is no one else in that house.â He tells me gently. I go cold all over.
âNo one? What about her partner? What about Kiara?â I demand. Bellamy takes my hands and holds them tight.
âThere is no one there. Just Cheryl Ryann⦠Kiara isnât here.â Liflinch away from his words.
âNo, she has to be. She HAS to be. Maybe you missed her, maybe sheâs hidden?â I suggest, my voice quiet, not ready to give up hope that we might find her just yet.
âWeâre going to keep checking, but sweetheart, none of us can see or scent any sign of a little girl in that house. I donât think she was ever here.â
âBut⦠I was so sure that Tristainâs mum was involved. It has to be her. Sheâs the only one who makes sense!â I think! might cry.
âShe is involved. She started swearing and yelling at me the moment we woke her. Donât give up yet.
She might still be able to tell us where Kiara is, or tell us about her partner. This is still progress.â He reassures me. My face darkens.
184- Lifeless and lawn âI want to talk to her.â I demand. Bellamy falters for a second, but Iâm already making my way over to the house. Bellamy chases after me. I can see heâs unsure, but I donât give him a chance to object. Itâs time for me to get some answers, because if Kiara isnât here, then I am going to find her.
