Chapter 189
Strings of Fate
189- Detention and deserving âLady, can you tell me your name?â She asks quietly. She sounds like she doesnât actually expect me to answer. Which is fair I guess, Iâm not even exactly one hundred percent sure that I can. My head is aching. But thatâs the question she asked and I am going to do my best to answer. It takes me a minute to manage it and I watch as Kiaraâs face falls even further with every second she doesnât hear from me.
Finally I succeed.
âRyann.â For a second, I donât think it worked. Kiara doesnât react and I sigh through my aching head and prepare to try again.
âThatâs a nice name. Ryann⦠I didnât want to believe it, I was hoping I was wrong but⦠Iâm pretty sure that my mum and dad are dead. They werenât moving when I was taken away. I was hoping they were just asleep or under a spell but⦠if that were true âould have come to get me by now, Daddy would have gotten me out of here and then probably locked me up in a tower like some fairytale character to make sure that no one ever gets to me again.â There are tears in her eyes and she lets out a whimpery sort of chuckle before a deep sigh.
âYou donât talk much, I donât even know how you talk to me at all. But I do know that youâre nice. Youâre a good person. I can feel it how you want to help me. I think you might be the only person I have left that cares about me. Youâre my only friend now. I donât think I really deserve a friend anymore⦠but youâre still here and I really want you to come find me okay? Ryann⦠Iâll be your best friend forever and ever if you can get me out of here.â She promises. Oh the poor darling. How can she think that she doesnât deserve a friend? What have they done to her? Everytime I speak to her I love this child more and more. Iâve never even spoken to her in person but I canât imagine feeling closer to her than I already do. I try to send reassuring vibes towards Kiara but I have no idea if it helps. I sit with her a little longer before I return to myself. At some point, I tipped over sideways and I am now lying on the bedroom floor. Oops. Itâs probably a good thing Bellamy hasnât come upstairs. He would not be thrilled to find me lying on the ground. Still, I need to go tell him what I learned. I try to get to my feet but immediately fall back into the pillows. I crawl over to the bedside table to grab the glass of water Bellamy gave me earlier. Okay, Iâll tell him in a minute when the world. stops spinning.
I stumble down the stairs and Bellamy must hear me coming because he is waiting for me in the hall at the bottom of the stairs. Itâs probably a good thing because I trip over the third stair from the bottom and accidentally launch myself at him. He catches me easily.
âWell hello to you too.â He greets me with a grin and I canât help but smile back. It doesnât last though.
âI spoke to Kiara again. Well, mostly she spoke to me. But she knew I was there.â I tell him. Bellamy gently lifts me off of my feet and carries me to the living room. Iâd complain but Iâm still a little dizzy and I just canât be bothered He sits on the couch with me in his lap.
âWhat did she tell you?â He asks.
âA lot of things. Most of it sad. She said Iâm the only friend she has, and she begged me to come find her.â My voice breaks as I tell him and Bellamy hugs me tighter.
âI did learn some useful stuff though. Cherylâs partner is definitely a woman. Kiara kept referring to the partner as âherâ and âsheâ. Also, Kiara is spelled. Iâll have to ask Cam more about it, but she said they did something to her and she canât take more than two steps away from the spot they leave her in.â I explain. Bellamy nods and I can see heâs contemplating the implications.
âWe couldnât sneak in and just take her. We need to deal with the partner first. We might need a Witch too in order to 189- Detention and deserving break the spell.â He observes and I nod my agreement.
âYeah, oh she also tried to describe where sheâs being kept. It sounds like a basement or something.
She described it as having stuff like the Witch shops do. So it has to be the Witch partnerâs home right?â
âProbably. Thatâs useful to know. Almost definitely a Witch, definitely female and probably keeping Kiara in her own house. Iâll let Alex know. Heâs currently searching through Cherylâs computer looking for⦠Well, anything useful really.â He texts the new information to Alex. I take the time to call Cam. She doesnât answer my call but does text back immediately.
Cam- Hey sorry, thereâs a huge party booking here and itâs super loud. I wouldnât be able to hear a phone call. I can text? Or I can call you back in a few hours.
Ryann- Thatâs alright. Texting should be fine. I managed to speak with Kiara again. She told me they spelled her or something. I was hoping you could help me identify it, maybe tell me how it can be broken?
CamâSure, tell me what the spell is doing and Iâll do my best to answer.
Ryann- It stops her from running away. She says she canât take more than two steps in any direction from the place they left her. I think it kind of makes her fall over or something if she does?.
Cam- Oh thatâs an easy answer. A basic detention spell. Mostly used for prisoners, but most parents learn it and itâs occasionally used to give overly rambunctious kids a time out. Not something I approve of. Thereâs a whole debate about it. Magically enforced punishments that is.
Cam- It should be fairly harmless, and usually they only last a few hours maximum. Less if you intend it to be short lived. If itâs going for longer than that, the Witch would need to reâcast it regularly. Probably a couple times a day at least. At night too. Maybe every six hours if the Witch is reasonably powerful?
Itâs more used for prisoner transports since itâs not practical to have to spell someone that much.
Ryann- Can it be broken? Or do we have to wait for it to time out? If we tried to take her away from that spot could we do it?
Cam- The spell is to stop someone from leaving. It doesnât stop them being taken. If you were to pick her up and carry her it wouldnât stop her. When you put her down she would be stuck in the spot you place her until the spell runs out though. So you could carry her from danger, but she couldnât run away of her own volition.
I am horrified. Why would anyone do that to a child? And sheâs been trapped like that for weeks now!
The poor thing. I am going to get her free and make sure that she is never trapped that way ever again!
