Chapter 25
Strings of Fate
25- Reassurance and respect âAre you sureâ¦â Bellamy trails off. I nod. He gives in pretty much immediately. Well that was casy. I sort of expected him to argue a little more. Well, whatever. He settles back into the bed. I crawl over the end of the bed and back into my spot. He flicks the lamp off and the room looks totally black as I adjust to the sudden darkness. A few mater I begin to make out a few shadowy shapes. I glance at Bellamy beside me, he doesnât seem to be asleep. yet. He notices my movement. Except I only really moved my eyes. This tells me two things. One; Bellamy has much better night vision than I do which is hardly surprising for a feline Shifter. Second; he was using the night vision to watch me.
âYouâre still awake?â He whispers.
âYeah, I guess.â I reply.
âUmm. Ryann?â he starts. I wait for him to continue.
âYouâre the only person other than my sister who doesnât use my title.â he suddenly states. Iâm confused. I thought it sounded like he wanted to ask something. That wasnât really a question.
âReally? I didnât know that.â I reply, hoping he will explain himself. Lucky for me, he keeps talking.
âItâs meant to be a sign of respect.â he explains then falls silent for a minute. I wait but he doesnât say anything so I break the silence.
âAre you saying you want me to stop using your name and use your title instead?â I ask.
Bellamy quickly objects.
âNo, definitely not.â he assures me.
âOh good, because I donât think I would have been able to do it.â I decide. Bellamy might be the Alpha, but he isnât my Alpha.
âEarlier you were telling my sister thereâs a difference between being disrespectful and messing around.â he starts. I nod, well aware that he can see it fine, âYes, was I wrong?â I question.
âWell⦠no, I mean, thatâs not what 1â he cuts himself off.
âDO you respect me?â Bellamy blurts out. For a moment Iâm stunned into silence. What kind of a question is that? Bellamy keeps talking when I donât immediately answer.
âBecause usually I can tell, people use my title to show respect, Shifters defer to me and are painfully polite to me. But you never really have, So I was wondering if that meant that you donât really respect meâ¦â he trails off. I sit up on my elbow to face him.
âBellamy, when we first met, YOU were the one who asked me to call you Bellamy. You didnât even tell me you were the Alpha until later. So, I know you first as Bellamy Kane the crazy guy who woke the whole building, then as Alpha Kane the lunatic who had me kidnapped. Iâve never used your title because you never seemed to exp it of me.â I explain. When Bellamy answers he sounds a little depressed.
âBased on the rather negative light youâve cast me in here and the fact that you keep calling me names, I take it that the answer is no, you donât think much of me.â He sighs and turns so his back is to me.
âYou are really not understanding me at all. What Iâm saying is, I donât really know Alpha Kaneâ so I canât really see you that way. But, I do know Bellamy. The jerk who was so concerned about his sister that he bent down the door of a complete stranger and later arranged her kidnapping for the sake of that sister. The weird guy who was willing to be open minded enough to trust in my unique magics. The idiot who fought Vampires then got upset because I was uncomfortable around him while he was NAKED. Bellamy, the complete oddball. who protected me from a pair of shoes. So yes Bellamy. I do respect you. But my opinion has nothing to do with your position as Alpha so it never occurred to me to use your title.â Bellamy turns back to face me. I wish I could see his face but itâs too dark. Itâs kind of unfair because I know he can see mine and that knowledge makes me blush. Itâs easy to be honest in the dark, at least until I remember that he has stupid night vision. Iâm interrupted from my thoughts by Bellamy. He grabs me and pulls me into a hug which catches me completely by surprise. He nuzzles close to me in a very catâlike motion and whispers in my ear.
âNever use my title. I prefer you like this.â I lie still and accept the hug. After a minute I start to wonder if heâs actually planning to let go..
âBellamy?â I whisper. He doesnât answer. Apparently now that his thoughts are settled heâs fallen asleep again. Oh well, I suppose I donât really mind staying where I am all that much. It close my eyes and it doesnât take long at all for me to fall asleep too.
I open my eyes and look around me. Iâm completely alone so Bellamy must have left. My blankets are tucked nicely around me in a way that no one can manage without some kind of assistance. I sit up and stretch a little. This is weird, itâs morning but I donât want to kill. anything. I actually feel pretty okay.
Usually mornings and I are not all that compatible. Wait, maybe I overslept and it isnât even morning anymore, that would explain it. I grab my phone. Itâs 8:45am. No thatâs still early enough to be horrible most of the time. I wonder what time Bellamy left? I notice a bit of paper on my bedside table that I donât remember leaving there. Another one of Bellamyâs notes? He does seem rather fond of them.
*Ryann, I didnât want to wake you but I have a meeting at 8. You will find another guard outside your door who will stay with you until someone comes to relieve him later this evening, Call me if you need anything.
Bellamy P.S. I probably should have mentioned this last night, but I respect you too, and not just because youâre brave enough to constantly insult me to my face.â
Well, that explains where Bellamy went at least. It was nice of him to leave a note for me. It wonder who is babysitting me now. Wait, he said the guard was outside my door. As in, outside outside or in the living area outside? I climb out of bed and open my bedroom door. I canât see anyone. Has Bellamy assigned some poor Shifter to hang around outside all day?
Because thatâs just silly, whoever it is can just come inside. I open the front door and immediately Darrien turns to face me. Well, of all the Shifters, I didnât expect it to be him.
âDarrien? Arenât you usually with Megan?â I ask, curious. He nods.
âYes Miss Gale. Miss Kane intends to stay at the compound all day. Sheâs researching for her 25- Reassurance and respect wedding I believe. Alpha Kane suggested I keep an eye on you today instead while he finds a more suitable guard for the long term.â He explains. He doesnât even bat an eyelid at my unicorn pyjamas and somewhat unkempt appearance. I like him all the more for it.
âWell come inside, thereâs no reason to stay out there.â Darrien looks uncomfortable with the idea. I ignore his discomfort, grab his arm and lead him inside.
âTake a seat, I was just about to make myself some toast for breakfast. Want anything?â I offer. He shakes his head.
âNo thank you Miss Gale.â Darrien closes and locks the door behind him then takes a seat at my little dining table. I set about making myself some buttered toast. Iâm just burning my fingers pulling it out the toaster when a knock at the door startles me and I drop my toast on the bench. I quickly flick it onto the plate I had prepared and go to answer the door. Darrien beats me to it.
âPlease let me Miss Gale.â I roll my eyes.
âCall me Ryann. Miss Gale makes me feel like a kindergarten teacher or something.â Darrien doesnât respond and I get the feeling he isnât going to cooperate right away, Iâll have to work on that one. He opens the door. Heâs so big that I canât see past him to whoever is waiting.
