Chapter 27
Strings of Fate
27- Fate and family I decide I canât stand it anymore.
âOkay, spill. What is it?â I demand. Darrien turns to face me, his expression serious.
âMiss Gale-â I cut him off.
âRyann.â I remind him. He grimaces.
âMiss Ryann.â I sigh, itâs progress at least.
âYou should not invite men into your room so easily. Particularly other Shifters. I believe it. will upset Alpha Kane. Heâs a good man, I donât like to see him disrespected.â He states. bluntly. I stare at him in shock. I did not see this coming. Does Darrien think Bellamy and I are⦠I donât know what exactly, but the way heâs staring is heavy with implications.
âWe were just watching a movie. Besides, that has nothing to do with Bellamy.â I say stiffly. Darrien raises an eyebrow.
âWith all due respect Miss Ryann. His scent is all over you and your room.â he points out. I flush red. I had no idea that Shifterâs sense of smell was powerful enough to identify different scents on people, although realistically I probably should have worked that one out on my own. Does this mean that everyone can tell when Iâve been spending time with Bellamy? Why didnât he say something? The jerk. I feel so awkward, and Darrien definitely thinks Bellamy and I are hooking up.
âThatâs not what itâs like. Heâs just been hanging out to keep an eye on me, just like you are now.â I argue.
âBesides, your warning is unnecessary. I donât generally invite strange men into my room or bed.â I look away, feeling awkward.
âYou invited me to sit on the bed.â He argues. I roll my eyes.
âIt was a completely different scenario.â My message tone goes off and I grab my phone, 27- Fate and family eager to seize the distraction.
Bellamy- Iâve arranged for lunch to be sent to you all at around 12. I didnât mean to offend. you before.
I laugh at the message. So Bellamy has reverted back to giving me food as an apology. Well I suppose I overreacted a little too.
Ryann- Sorry I overreacted a bit. You were just trying to help.
I send the message, then send another as an afterthought.
Ryann- Why didnât you mention that Shifters would be able to tell weâve spent time together from my scent??? Itâs super awkward.
Bellamy- I forgot you wouldnât know and I was in a hurry this morning. That does explain the strange look my sister gave me when I got home though.
Ryann-â¦..Itâs probably almost as uncomfortable as the look Darrien gave me.
Bellamy- Oops.
I drop the phone back to the table. This is going to be hard to explain to Megan. Iâm surprised she hasnât called or texted to ask about it already. Darrien looks curious.
âBellamy ordered lunch for us at around 12. I donât know what though.â Darrien nods.
âI think Alpha Kane must be very fond of you.â He comments pointedly. Nervously, I ask;
âWhat makes you say that?â
âHe treats you special, heâs always in a good mood after heâs around you, heâs overly concerned about your wellâbeing. Not to mention, heâs made sure that everyone at the compound knows that you are free to come and go as you wish. I donât know any other non- Shifter with that privilege, and heâs only known you for a few days.â he lists off. I had no idea about that last one. Bellamy never mentioned it and I havenât actually tried to go to the compound on my own. Iâm lost in thought and am pulled back to reality when Darrien continues.
âHe definitely seems attached to you. In fact he treats you like-â He cuts himself off and his eyes go wide. I can see the wheels turning in his head as all the little pieces fall into place.
âYou asked Megan if Shifters can have nonâShifter mates.â he says slowly. I try and laugh it off.
âWerenât you pretending you donât listen to our conversations? And yeah, if Iâm going to find his mate it helps to have the facts.â I try and explain it away. He shakes his head.
âIâve heard Alpha Kane and Megan discuss your abilities. You donât need any of that information to find his mate.â he states firmly. What? Bellamy said that my powers werenât going to be made public knowledge. I guess I should have known that Darrien wouldnât really count. He is pretty much Meganâs shadow after all. I stand up and walk into my kitchen area, trying to put a little space between us.
Darrien stands up and follows me. Heâs so huge that it makes me feel even more crowded despite the added distance. So much for that plan.
âI was just curious.â I try again. Darrien shakes his head.
âYouâre his m-â I cut him off.
âDonât say it!â I demand in a harsh whisper. Being careful not to raise my voice and wake Logan.
âIâm right though arenât I? Why havenât you told him?â Darrien asks.
âWhy havenât you told Megan how you feel?â I swing it back to him. He jerks back as if I slapped him.
âHowâ¦â he trails off. I give him a weak smile.
âItâs pretty obvious. At least it is to me.â Darrien returns to his seat. He leans his head in his hands and looks miserable.
âBy the time I realised how I felt, she was already with Tristan. Now sheâs engaged and itâs too late.â I wonder if I should tell him about his tie to Megan. I decide that might be a little too.
direct. I try another method. Maybe if I just give him a bit of hope, âI wouldnât give up just yet. Megan⦠well, Tristan isnât the one sheâs fated to be with. Fate always works things out in the end.â Darrien is suddenly in front of me, he grabs me by the shoulders and makes me face him.
âYouâre sure of this?â He looks desperate. I nod. He looks so hopeful. Iâm glad I was able to help a little.
âIs she my fate Ryann?â Darrienâs tone is almost pleading. I canât bring myself to look him in the eyes.
âYes.â I finally blurt out, almost against my will. So much for being subtle about it. He went. ahead and just asked me.
âBut you need to keep quiet about it, at least for now. She isnât ready to hear it. But I promise. to do what I can to help. Bellamy is going to help too.â Darrien seems reluctant. He thinks over my words.
âIs that why you havenât told Alpha Kane that youâre his mate? You donât think heâs ready?â he questions. I shrug and look away.
Maybe, he doesnât really know me, even if his instincts are driving him towards me. Not to mention heâs already under a lot of pressure to pick a mate, I donât want that to influence his decision. Or maybe Iâm the one whoâs not ready. Iâve only known him a few days.â I mutter, more to myself than to Darrien.
âYou donât plan to tell him then? Iâm sure he would be glad to have you as his mate. Do you have some objection to him?â I shake my head.
âThatâs not it. I will tell him, eventually. But I barely know him. Iâm not ready to suddenly be his mate.â I try and explain. Darrien frowns.
âHe would never force you to be anything you arenât ready for.â he assures me.
âIâm not ready for him to think of me as his mate. He wouldnât be able to help that.â
27- Fate and family âRyann, I think youâll find it wonât take long for him to begin thinking of you that way regardless of if you tell him or not.â I sigh.
âI know. But I need more time. Fate always sorts itself out in the end, most of the time trying to hurry it along does more harm than good.â A horrifying thought occurs to me.
âYou wonât tell him will you?â I stare up at Darrien. He contemplates it for a moment before shaking his head.
âIt should come from you. Although I canât say that Iâll lie to him if he asks me outright. He is my Alpha. I donât believe it is likely that an occasion should arise where he would ask me though.â I close my eyes, relieved.
âThank you Darrien. You know, I didnât think you were this talkative. Iâm sort of surprised.â I comment. He shrugs.
âI donât usually have so much to say.â I nod.
âFair enough. Well, at least I was right about one thing. We are definitely going to be good.
friends.â Darrien smiles at me.
âActually, I think we will be family. But yes, we are friends.â
