Chapter 68
Strings of Fate
68- Laundry and loneliness Their work done for the day, Shaun and Alex head off, although Shaun takes a moment to call out to Maggie as she waves at them from her window.
âWe will be back in the morning, bright and early!â I donât hear Maggieâs answer, but Shauns response is to let out a piercing wolf whistle and wink at her.
âOh now Iâm going to be up all night dreaming about tomorrow morning.â He blows her a kiss out the car window as they drive off. He is really laying it on thick, she must have offered to make something really nice tomorrow morning. I find Aaron examining my windows. After poking and prodding at them for a few minutes he seems content. He pulls out his own phone and checks the camera system. He is set up as a second user. From what I understand he canât set the code to turn off the alarm, but he can check the cameras and if the alarm goes off it alerts his phone. As my guard he is apparently responsible for making sure the security system is working and getting it fixed if something is wrong.
Which is a good thing because I would have no idea. Finally content with the situation he gives me a nod and makes a phone call. I can only hear his side of the conversation.
âAlpha Kane⦠Yes⦠Yes⦠Understood. Thank you.â He hangs up. Well all I got from that is that he was talking to Bellamy.
âThat was Bellamy?â I confirm. Aaron nods.
âYou confirmed the security is set up?â Another single nod.
âDoes that mean you can go home now? Not that Iâm trying to chase you out or anything, but I donât want to keep you here for no reason, you have a life too Iâm sure.â Aaron shrugs one shoulder and gives me a slight smile.
âOkay I have no idea what that means. Are you staying or not?â He shrugs again and I roll my eyes.
âYou are totally doing this on purpose. I know you can talk. But whatever, if you wanna stay silent thatâs completely up to you. So, I start work at eleven am tomorrow. I donât intend to go anywhere else tonight. So if youâre allowed to leave then feel free. Be here by ten thirty at 68- Laundry and loneliness the latest, ten if you want to get brunch together before my shift. You can hang out here or leave.
Whatever you want. As I said earlier, make yourself at home.â I stare at him with my arms crossed waiting for his response. I think I see a glimmer of a smile before his serious. expression slides back into place.
âGoodnight Miss Gale.â With that, he turns and sees himself out. I go to lock the door behind him but apparently it automatically locks itself now. Thatâs cool I suppose. After all the power tools and chattering from Shaun and Alex today, it is actually almost creepy in here, too quiet. Itâs also starting to get dark but I havenât turned on any lights so itâs hard to see. I hadnât realised how dark it was. I head into my room and flick on my light. I sigh when I see the pile of unfolded laundry and my unmade bed. I take a few minutes to make my bed. neatly, although it seems like a waste because Iâll probably mess it up soon going to sleep. Still, thereâs something satisfying about a freshly laundered and made up bed. Giving in, I finally start folding my laundry. I use the term folding loosely as what I do can barely be considered folding. Itâs not neat and probably crumples the clothes more than anything, but I canât be bothered doing a better job. Iâve only folded a few items when my phone rings. It takes me a second to find my phone, I apparently have been stacking my âfoldedâ laundry on top of it. A glance shows me itâs Bellamy calling. I quickly answer before it rings out.
âHi Bellamy.â
âHello there, beautiful. How has your day been?â he asks.
âNot bad. Iâve almost finished all the cleaning I meant to do, Iâm just folding my laundry now. How about yours?â I swap him to speaker phone and place the phone on my bedside table so I can continue folding. Bellamy sighs.
âIt was fine. Nothing special, just a lot of very dull meetings today. Iâm jealous youâve gotten everything done. I have so much left to do tonight and another appointment arriving soon. A Vampire representative is stopping by but of course they only come for late appointments. In the meantime, Iâm procrastinating paperwork. Although paperwork isnât nearly as awful when youâre here with me. I donât suppose Iâm going to see you tonight though. Aaron has signed out so I assume you donât plan to come over.â He lets out a deep sigh.
âOh. Were you expecting me to?â It didnât occur to me that Bellamy might have been wanting me to come over again this evening. He didnât ask me to, and I saw him this morning already.
68. Laundry and loneliness âNo, no itâs okayâ he quickly assures me.
âI didnât mean it in a pushy way. I was hoping I would be able to stop by your place and bring you dinner or something. This meeting was a last minute thing. Have you eaten dinner yet?â
âNo but I picked up ingredients. Iâll make something in a bit. I just want to finish putting away my laundry.â Bellamy and I keep chatting while I put away my badly folded clothes. I tell him about Shaun and Alex flirting with Maggie and he tells me more about his work and the businesses he is responsible for. He mostly delegates the day to day matters but seems to have a lot of big picture decisions and paperwork to take care of. Plus the duties as Alpha. We keep talking while I make dinner and he stays on the line while I eat. Tired, I drop my dishes in the sink and go collapse into my bed. I notice a low power notification on my phone.
âOh one one second, weâve been on the phone a while and itâs going flat. Iâll plug it in by my bed. You know it is so weirdly quiet here now that thereâs no one else hanging around. Iâd almost gotten used to it.
Although itâs nice not to feel babysat for once.â Bellamy is quiet.
âIs everything alright?â I ask. He sighs.
âYou know I donât love the idea of you being alone. I know itâs what you want but it makes me worry.â He admits.
âIsnât that the whole point of this new fancy security set up? So you donât have to worry about me?â I remind him.
âI canât help myself. Itâs just how I am.â He says, frustration clear in his tone.
âIs there anything I can do to make it easier for you, other than just having a babysitter twenty four seven?â I offer. Bellamy is quiet a moment and I can practically hear the wheels. in his brain turning.
5 âIn your security app can you program it so your alarm system will alert me if thereâs a problem? You should just need to add my phone number.â He suggests quietly.
âSure, I donât see why not. Iâll do that now.â I fiddle with the settings until I successfully add Bellamy to the alert system.
68- Laundry and loneliness.
âIs there anything else?â I question. This time he answers almost too fast.
âI want you to check in with me.â Iâm not quite sure what heâs asking for.
âCheck in when? How? I need more information than that.â I prompt him.
âI wan want to establish regular times for us to check in with each other so I know youâre okay. Then if I donât hear from you I can come searching for you.â He explains. That doesnât sound super unreasonable, but something about Bellamyâs tone tells me thereâs something I wonât like about the idea.
