Chapter 82
Strings of Fate
82- Planning and placating Bellamy considers me for a moment then nods.
âFine. I might be mad, I canât be sure until you tell me whatâs wrong. But I promise Iâll get over it and Iâll help you fix it. Whatever it is. Now, tell me whatâs wrong.â His voice is quiet, like heâs trying not to startle me. I relent and accept my fate.
âWell⦠yesterday morning I found a letter under my door.â I start. I expect him to interrupt but he waits patiently for me to explain. I tell him what the letter said and about what I saw on the security camera.
Bellamy drops his hands to his sides, closes his eyes and takes three deep breaths. I can tell heâs trying to stay calm, but his shoulders and hands are tensed up and his jaw is so tight Iâd be surprised if he could get words out. I wait, giving him time to process. Without opening his eyes, he speaks again, his voice measured and, controlled.
âWhy did you hide it? Why wait so long to tell me?â He asks.
âI⦠I panicked I guess. I didnât want you to be worried about me. Then I decided that I should tell you and I wanted to do it in person rather than on the phone, and I got sidetracked by Megan and⦠well, you know the rest.â I watch Bellamy. His eyes are still shut as he processes what Iâve told him.
âAre⦠are you angry with me?â I ask quietly. His eyes fly open and meet mine. Unlike the molten gold his eyes were this morning, now theyâre burning embers.
âIâm trying to convince myself I shouldnât be. You were afraid and made a stupid choice, but youâre here and youâre okay and thatâs what I really care about.â He says he isnât angry but the words are practically a growl. I fight the urge to cringe. Iâm quickly discovering that while I enjoy bickering with Bellamy, I donât like it when heâs actually upset with me.
âYou sound angry.â I comment. Bellamy begins pacing his office, glancing over at me every time he turns.
âI am angry. Iâm angry with you for not saying anything sooner and walking around like everything is okay, Iâm angry at myself for being so out of control that you werenât comfortable saying anything sooner. Iâm angry with Aaron for not noticing something wast wrong, Iâm Iâm angry with my sister for distracting you. But mostly Iâm furious that anyone would threaten you. Iâm going to fix it, Ryann. Iâll find out who it is, Iâll keep you safe.â he promises. I almost tear up again. I interrupt Bellamyâs pacing with a hand on his arm.
âI wonât lie and say a little bit of me not saying anything wasnât because I thought you would overreact.
But mostly I didnât think it was a priority because I already feel safe. Youâve already taken every reasonable step to keep me safe. I didnât feel like there was anything to worry about.â I explain. Bellamy stares for a moment, frozen in place, before grabbing me tightly and pulling me into a hard kiss. Itâs over before I can even process that heâs moved. He continues to clutch me tightly against his chest.
âNothing is going to happen to you.â Iâm not sure if heâs promising me or reassuring himself, but I nod against his chest anyway.
âIâm pretty sure Iâm not the one who needs convincing. Anyway, go on.â I wait. Bellamy steps back to look at my face. He looks confused.
âWhat am I supposed to be going on with?â he asks and I roll my eyes.
âI donât know. But I figured youâd have some new irritating slash sorta endearing super overprotective behaviour for me to deal with. Or something like that at least. So go ahead, lay it on me.â Bellamy stares for a second, then bursts out laughing. Before I can even ask why, he grabs me and kisses me firmly before letting me go. I step back in shock.
âUhm⦠what?â I ask. He laughs again.
âSorry, I couldnât help it. You did say to lay it on you, and you were looking so serious.â He places his hands on my shoulders.
âYouâre going to stay safe and use your security system. Hopefully this isnât a big deal. You also need to give me the letter so I can look into it properly. Iâll call Alex right away and have him check the security footage again, in case you missed something.â He starts planning and I canât help but smile. I thought telling Bellamy would make life harder, I should have known that all he would do was try and make things better.
âYeah, I have the letter at home.â
82- Planning and placating âLet me grab my keys, Iâll drive you home and you can grab it for me. Iâll tell Aaron to meet us there. I assume you put it somewhere safe?â I shrug.
âI put it⦠in my bottom drawer.â I admit. Bellamy raises an eyebrow.
âWhat, youâre pretty nosy, and I already told you to stay out of that drawer. It seemed like a good idea at the time.â I protest.
âObjectively, it was a good way to hide it from me, although I still wish you didnât feel like you needed to⦠Iâm mostly just thinking that Iâm going to have to be on the lookout in the future, youâre actually good at hiding things from me.â I frown.
âBellamy, I lasted less than a day before I changed my mind and wanted to tell you. Iâm pretty sure I wonât make that mistake again. It was miserable. You really donât need to worry about it. Next time Iâll definitely call you right away.â I assure him. He crosses his arms and looks away from me.
âSee that you do.â
The next few weeks pass pleasantly. I donât receive any more weird threatening letters or any other kinds of issues. Aaron and I develop a routine and I spend the majority of my free time with Megan and Bellamy. The group chat between myself, Megan and Harry stays strong and we all chat every day. Iâm finally starting to feel comfortable in my own life again. Itâs a Friday night and Iâm super excited for one of my rare weekends off. Megan is coming to hang out and we are only going to drink in moderation from now on. I hope⦠I hear her quick knocks at the door and let her and Darrien in.
âHi guys! I greet them. Darrien drops Meganâs bag on my table while Megan starts rummaging through my fridge. Sh rummaging through my fridge. Sheâs been visiting a lot lately and has gotten very comfortable here. I donât mind it, but itâs definitely a strange feeling. Bellamy is the same, helping himself to things and moving things around all the time. It would be annoying but they constantly bring groceries and treats to make up for the stuff they use up so somehow despite constantly feeding guests, my shopping budget has gotten lower. Even Aaron has taken to bringing meals along, using my microwave and stove. He cleans up all the time too. Iâve told him he doesnât need to but, in the smallest number of words he could manage and with a lot of interpretation on my part, heâs made it clear that technically he is not a guest, heâs at work and will clean up after himself. I argued at first, but itâs ridiculously hard trying 82âPlanning and placating to argue with someone who basically never answers, so I gave up quickly. Iâm starting to think that being quiet is just Aaronâs method of getting his own way.
