Chapter 99
Strings of Fate
99- Options and obliviousness I get ready as fast as possible and practically drag Bellamy downstairs to the kitchen. I want to make up with Megan as fast as I possibly can. I stop in the kitchen doorway, confused when I donât immediately hear Megan. I can hear her but not see her. A moment later she pops up from the floor.
She was apparently kneeling and the bench blocked my view.
âHey! I was just watching the breakfast muffins in the oven. I always overcook them a little so I wanted to keep an eye on them so they would be perfect for you.â Megan smiles at me in an excessively cheerful manner. Okay, that has got to be fake.
âWhy are you acting happy? You were upset a minute ago.â I ask warily. This level of cheerfulness is almost creepy. Just because I had a single bad night, it doesnât magically make her hard times go away.
âYouâre right. I was upset, but then I thought about it while making the mix for these muffins and Iâve decided to forget about being annoyed and look at the bright side. So I am going to move straight on to being excited. Having you here all the time is going to be fun, plus Iâm fairly sure itâs going to do wonders for Bellamyâs mood too which is a bonus for me.â She answers, satisfaction and teasing in her tone. I glare at her and move to my usual seat by the bench. Bellamy sits beside me. I look to him to say something to Megan but he justâshrugs. I guess a little as he watches he doesnât exactly disagree. His smile falls my face.
âWe do still need to figure out the arrangements. Do you need your own room?â He asks. He keeps his expression fairly blank but I can hear the anxiety creeping into his tone. Before I can decide on an answer, Megan chimes in.
âWhy would she need her own room? Wonât she be staying with you anyway?â She turns to 1. me.
âWonât you?â She demands. I stare at her at a loss for words, not exactly sure how to explain without completely embarrassing myself. Bellamy intervenes.
âI offered her one because she should have a choice. She hasnât moved in because she was ready to move in, sheâs here because someone threatened her, vandalised her home and caused her to get injured. If she decides to stay with me it will be because she wants to be there, not because sheâs scared to stay at home and doesnât have a better option.â He tells 99- Options and obliviousness her, his voice dead serious. Megan looks slightly horrified.
âIâm sorry Ry, I didnât think about it like that. I was just excited to have you here.â She looks like Logan on the rare occasions he gets in trouble. Like a kicked puppy, all big eyes and sad face.
âItâs okay Megs, really.â I turn to Bellamy.
âCan I think about it? Iâll let you know by the end of the day, I just want to be sure of answer.â I tell him. I want time to think but I canât imagine moving to a different room. Itâs awkward, but I think sleeping somewhere else wouldnât fix the problem. It might just make it worse. Imagining having to actively make the decision to go to his room or invite him to mine if I want to spend time with him sounds awful Up until now, weâre mostly stayed night because we happened to be in the same place and it was easier, or by accident. I know to an extent thatâs not true. I could have said no on the times Bellamy hat 2sed to stay over But I didnât, so that probably means I do want to stay with him, right? I want to south through my thoughts, but I think mostly I just need to take the time to work up the courage to admit I want to stay with him. Itâs sooner than I anticipated, but Megan is right that it was bound. to happen eventually.
âOf course you can. Just let me know when youâre ready. And you can always change yo mind later.â
He assures me. I smile at him. Megan sighs dramatically. She is leaming on the bench, her head on her hands watching us with a dreamy expression.
âYou guys are so cute. Iâm kind of jealous.â She sighs again. I raise an eyebrow.
âTealous of us?â I ask doubtfully. She shrugs.
âSure, awkward banter and flirting. Itâs adorable. I roll my ever âYouâre delusional.â I tell her. Then I smirk.
âBesides, if youâre in need of some awkward flirting I could always just call Damien over.â I tease. She freezes and turns red.
âOh, the muffins!â She suddenly declares, turning away. She grabs a towel and pulls a tray of muffins out of the oven. They smell good, although they look a little past golden browEL.
99- Options and obliviousness âShit.â She grumbles.
âI did it again. I always get distracted.â I watch as she burns her fingers pulling them out of the tray, dropping one on the bench before flicking it back up onto a plate. Eventually she pushes two plates in front of Bellamy and I and a third for herself.
âEat up, they should still be okay, I caught them in time.â The muffins she has made are some combination of eggs, bacon and cheese. There are some spices and things but I have no idea what else. Either way, they taste good enough that I go ahead and burn my tongue eating them too fast.
Once he finishes, Bellamy kisses me on the cheek and excuses himself to his office to make some calls. He is probably going to talk to Alex and the rest of the team at some point too. Actually, now that Iâm thinking about it, I should message Shaun back. He did ask if I could check in when I was ready. I grab my phone and send off a few quick messages replying to Aaron, Shaun and Darrien.
âSo, I missed messages in the group chat yesterday. Anything interesting?â I ask. Megan shrugs.
âMore of the same. Apparently the cute bartender is totally spelling peopleâs drinks though. Itâs legal but only technically. Harry says that she only does it in a helpful way though so itâs probably okay.â She shrugs and I frown.
âSpelling people is okay? What kinds of spells?â I ask.
âNot sure⦠He mentioned that she mostly gives out nice spells to cheer people up and stuff.â
âMostly?â I comment. She shrugs again.
âRight⦠and what about Darrien? Have you spoken to him since lunch yesterday?â I ask. Megan seems to shrink back a little.
âNo.â She admits in a quiet voice.
âWhy not? I thought you were okay with him courting you? You let him pay for stuff, thatâs meant to mean youâre okay with it, right?â I question. Megan bites her lip and takes another bite of food before answering.
Emergency calls only MOOV 99- Options and obliviousness 075% 11:52 âIâm just scared, I donât want to get hurt again. I didnât even know he was interested.â She says. I raise an eyebrow.
âAre you sure? Because I noticed his interest, and you are far more socially competent than I am.â I point out.
âI thought maybe, after my wedding when he was looking after me⦠but then he never said anything.
Then again, I wouldnât have wanted to hear it.â she muses and I nod my agreement.
âWell yeah. Thatâs why he waited.â I agree. Megan turns to me suspiciously.
âHow long have you known?â she demands. I shrug.
âOh, I donât know. Probably since the first time we went dress shopping?â I answer. Megan groans.
âThatâs embarrassing.â She turns contemplative.
âIf I asked you about my strings, would you tell me?â She asks, curiously.
