North Star (ManxMan)
I do not see my husband for a while after that fateful day that would go down in history as the day that we finally spoke. Shared words. Conversed. Desmond had said since my annoyance level had spiked up these days I had gone without seeing my husband's face.
It's Thursday and I have an off day and a late shift tomorrow but I had forgotten some books I wanted to read at the library and was on my way to get it. I had a cup of coffee in one hand, my other hand was pushed into the pocket of his coat. I had on a grey turtle neck, black jeans and black coat, I hadn't sone anything to my hair and had just let it fall into my eyes.
I was literally bouncing on my feet as I waited for the train, there was no doubt in my mind that I was going to see my husband today and that would make today the best day ever. Once the train pulls to a stop, I walked in and found an empty seat, taking a sip of my coffee.
I was still playing with Wrendermeinsane. He was one of the best people I have played with on Words With Friend. I had just played a fifty point score word when the train pulls to a stop, the doors part and people rush in. I held my breath as I waited, hoping he would walk into my train-car. The breath was knocked out of me when I see him.
He was walking in slow motion. Maybe that was just me. He was in brown today brown sweater, black pants and a matching brown coat, his hair like always was styled off his face and he was also holding a cup of coffee. He walks over and sits right in front of me and finally, looks at me. Ah fuck, I should have worn my scarf today so I could have hidden behind it.
Feeling a burst of courage, I raised my hand and waved.
My husband stared at me, a very small, literally slight tilt, of the head. I raised my hand, my cheeks flaring up. Just when I was about to look down at my phone or my feet in embarrassment when my husband raised his hands and waved back.
My heart slammed against my chest as I stared at him with wide eyes.
The only other person in the train-car was an elderly woman who was resting her eyes, leaving my husband and I in our new bubble.
I didn't know what to say. I was so used to signing and I didn't like wearing my hearing aid and I didn't really like talking too much. Even if do talk, what do I even say? Oh my god. My phone buzzed with a notification from Wrendermeinsane who also played a fifty point word.
My husband and I do not say anything else and I was staring so pointedly at my phone, my cheeks still hot and surely red. I nearly jumped out of my seat when I feel a tap on my shoulder, only for me to look up and see him.
He thrust his phone in my face and looked at the words he typed out in his notes app.
I don't know where you stop but they just announced the next two train stops after mine are closed.
Oh.
On instinct, I raised my hand and signed thank you, tapping my chin and holding out my hand.
My husband nodded and I smiled softly at him.
That means I am going to get down with my husband at his train station. Stop it, Bailey. let's not be creepy. When the train pulls to a stop, my husband got up and walked out, me not too far behind. I didn't want him to have weird thoughts about me. That would be so bad.
I ended up waiting outside of the train station, pulling out my phone to check the map. The library was a thirty minutes walk from here. The air was fresh, chilly but it would be nice to take a walk and maybe on my way home, I'd use a cab or something.
By the time I looked up, my husband had disappeared. I wondered what work he does. Maybe he was a model. I wouldn't be surprised.
With a shrug, I began walking, phone clutched in my hand as I moved . It felt nice not rushing anywhere or rushing to walk. Maybe I'll stop at a supermarket and make myself a nice lunch and maybe dinner as well, I've been ordering too much take out.
About ten minutes away from the train station, I felt someone tug on my shirt and I turn around, my heart beating really fast. A sense of doom falling over me when I see three men standing there, they were talking, yelling and they were talking so fast that I couldn't lip read. But I wasn't an idiot. They were trying to rob me.
Flight instincts kick in and I just ended up running as fast as I could, wondering why the fuck were people not on the road, there was no one to save me. I ended up making a wrong turn and came to a closed road. I was breathing so hard and my legs were starting to hurt.
I couldn't hear anything and there was this ringing in my ear. One of the three men, walked towards me menacingly and I flinched back. I didn't know what to do. What do I do? I can't fight. Fuck. I was about to close my eyes when all three men turned to look behind them.
And there he was, holding a metal pipe and looking like he walked out of my dreams.
My husband.
He walks forward, flipping the pipe in his hand in such a cool way, like how they do it in the movies.. He's saying something but he was too far away from me too tell. One of the three men rush towards him and I couldn't do anything but watch as my husband, flipes the pipe and swings, hitting the man right in the neck, his feet kicking out and bringing the bad guy to his knees. It happened so fast that I didn't know how to react.
My husband fights like he was trained for it and he did all this with a bored expression on his face but there was a slight twitch in his brows that exposed his annoyance. In less than a minute, all three robbers were on the ground, one passed out and two groaning in pain. The man who had been about to hit me, was crying and reaching for his leg which was bent at such an awkward, painful angle.
My husband ran towards me, one hand resting on my arm and the other cupping my face. It felt like something sharp and electric had zinged through me and I just didn't know what to do. My heart was beating really fast and I was very sure that it was not because of the fright but the fact that I was this close to my husband and he was touching me.
I wished I had my hearing aid on so I could at least hear what my husband was saying. It seemed to click and he remembers me.
He didn't seem to know how to sign what he wanted to say. I was pretty sure he didn't know how to sign at all. So he asks me slowly. . .
"Are you okay?" he repeated it slowly and made it easier for me to lip read.
"I'm fine. I'm okay."
My husband ends up pulling out his phone from pocket, fingers typing quickly on the screen and then he holds it out to me.
"Do you want to calm down a bit? There's a cafe not far from here and my office is also close by. What ever one is comfortable for you."
I take his phone from him and typed out m response.
"A cafe is fine. Thank you."
My husband led the way and it was truly a short walk from here. It's small and basically empty. My husband taps on his phone and hands it to me.
"What would you like to drink?"
I typed out my response. "Affogato, if they have one on the menu."
My husband excuses himself and goes over to the place and receive our order. Our seat was close to the window and I could look out of it. I let out a sigh and pulled out my own phone and tapped on the notification from Desmond.
Where are you
are you still on your way?
To Desmondu: still on my way. Got distracted for a bit.
There was also a notification showing Wrendermeinsane had made a move. Normally, I would have responded quickly but I just was not in the mood right now. We had left those guys behind and had just walked away. Should we have called the cops? Was leaving the right thing to do?
When my husband arrives with my order, he sets it on the table and I smiled at it. He had gotten a plain black coffee for himself.
"Should we have left them there?"
My husband stared at me for a bit, running his hand through his hair. He takes out his phone to type but I shake my head at him, he really didn't need to. I was quite fluent at lip reading.
"Someone will find them there." he said with a shrug.
"Okay."
I wondered what his name was and what business he does if his office was close by. Maybe I should have chosen his office then at least I would have curbed half of my curiosity. But first thing's first. . .
"Thank you for saving me."
"You're welcome." he replied and then gestured at my dessert. I picked up my spoon and cut into the yummy goodness. Whenever I felt scared, I always make or order this. It's the right mix of ice cream and espresso.
He lifts his phone and tapped, finger scrolling as he reads something. I wondered what it was. Maybe he was scrolling through social media like I do or maybe he was reading something an article or something.
Maybe I'll take a cab from here to the library, it would make things easier and faster for me. I think I already had enough excitement for the day, in fact for the year.
We do not exchange any more words until I finished my dessert while my husband left his coffee, not even touching it in the slightest. What do we talk about? What can I say to make this less awkward? I wondered what he was thinking about.
"I did not see you this morning."
He said the words slow enough for me to read his lips perfectly.
"Today is my day off. I'm just heading to the library to pick up a couple of books and then head back." I said, feeling a little bit self-conscious of my voice. I was in speech therapy for fifteen ears and Desmond and my dad have always told me that my speech was good but with a minimal, very tiny deaf accent. I was still very conscious of it and also why I rarely spoke.
But today, due to circumstance, I had to speak so my husband could understand me.
"I just ordered an Uber. It's two minutes away." I said, getting up to my feet.
My husband got to his feet and walks out me, he remained by my side until the Uber pulls to a stop in front of me. I made sure the license plate and the driver were the same as it was in the app.
"Thank you for saving me today." I said once more.
"Any time."
my husband pulls open my door for me and just before I got in, I turned to him.
"What is your name?"
He pulls out his phone, tapped on four letters and holds it out to me.
"Wren."
