Chapter 7

6.

North Star (ManxMan)

It was Wednesday when things took a left turn.

I was happy and smiley, sipping on my hot americano when the door to the bookshop was opened and in walked a tall girl with dark hair. She had on a red coat, black turtleneck and matching jeans and boots. Dangling from her ears were large earrings and there was a large gold piece resting on her neck. Her nose was stuck in the air and she looked around like she was disgusted by the place.

Which I took great offence to.

Desmond, thankfully, walked up to my side and I didn't have to look at him to know he had asked her what he asked everyone who walked in.

"How may we help you?

The woman stalked in, in her heeled boots, her gaze resting on me.

Her glossed lips moved quickly and I could not really get what she had said. I looked at Desmond who had a frown on his face and fire in his eyes. He was angry. Just as he was about to type, I set my phone on speech to text, so I could see what was being said.

Desmond's hand moved swiftly as he signed what she had said. "She was being rude and cussed a lot. She asked if you were Bailey dating Wren."

"Help me translate when I sign?" I asked Desmond and he nodded.

I turned towards her and nodded.

As she spoke, her words automatically turned to texts on my phone and I frowned down at the words..

"I was told that you were mute but it is so much better to see it for myself. My brother really knows how to attract them, doesn't he. . ." were the words that had come out of her mouth. Brother. So this is Wren's sister.

They were nothing alike.

I raised my hands and signed back my response. "I don't know who you are and if you're going to keep being rude, I'm going to ask you to leave my store."

Desmond told her what I had signed and her lips parted in a gasp. Her nose scrunched up in either anger or disgust. The lady raised her middle fingers up before turning and leaving the store in a huff. I turned to Desmond who immediately started signing to me.

"Well, wasn't she the nicest?" he signed. "Are you sure you've never seen her before?" he asked and I shook my head in response. No. I haven't. Wren hadn't even told me that he had a sibling. I don't even know if she is the only sister he has or not. And we were not even dating. What even gave her that idea?

"I have never seen her in my life. Let me ask Wren." I signed in response.

I picked up my phone and shot Wren a quick message. I placed the phone down, not expecting Wren to reply quickly because he had told me earlier that he was going to be in meetings all day. Hopefully he will respond when he sees it.

I picked up my coffee, taking another sip.

"You okay?" Desmond signed and I nodded. I was alright. She was just a stranger, it would take more than being called mute to hurt me.

Desmond pressed a kiss to my head and then disappeared between the shelves. I looked underneath the counter and grabbed the copy of Breaking Dawn that I had been reading. I do not know how many minutes or hours passed but suddenly my phone vibrated against the table.

It was a text from Wren.

My husband: She was there? She really was in your store?

Only forty five minutes had gone by since I had sent Wren that message. I quickly typed out my response and hit send.

To My husband: she was. She is not the nicest of people, sorry to say

From My Husband: I'm so sorry she bothered you

From My Husband: Want me to make it up to you? I can make you dinner?

I must have made a sound because Desmond peeks out from the shelves.

"What?"

I raised my phone up and Des ran over, taking the phone from me and reading over the words.

"Little Bailey going on his date with his husband. . ." Desmond signed, his expression mushy and excited. I couldn't hide my excitement either, I was literally bouncing on my feet. My husband and I took the train today, so that means that we would take the train to his stop and I would actually see where he lives. Be in his home.

To My Husband: I would love that

From my Husband: I'll make the next dinner plans

Time seemed to move slowly. Like it knew what my plans were and was trying to delay it. I couldn't stop bouncing on my feet and I was so excited. My heart was beating at such a fast rate and even Desmond was starting to get annoyed at me.

When Wren finally walks into the store, I must have let out another sound because he raised his brow at me. There was a soft smile on his lips as he walked towards me. My husband was in a large black coat, brown sweater, black pants and a brown plaid scarf around his neck. His hair hadn't been styled this morning, so it was falling into his face in a soft wave. My very handsome husband, everybody.

He raised his hand in a wave and I waved back.

"I am so sorry about my sister." he signed, moving closer, making his hands into a fist and rubbing it in a circular motion across his chest. "I'll talk to her. . ." he added, his fingers moving swiftly. He had gotten really good at signing and I wondered if it was actually the youtube videos and my little lessons here and there that were making him fluent.

"It's alright. I told her to leave before she could say anything else." I signed as I slid out from behind the counter. Wren nodded. I smiled brightly as I watched him clap hands with Desmond and pull him in for a one armed bro hug.

I really liked that they got along. It was really cute to watch.

I quickly grabbed my jacket, still pushing my hands into the sleeves as I walked towards Desmond and Wren who were still talking. Wren held out his arm towards me and I wrapped my hands around it. When I looked up to tell Desmond goodbye, I saw him smiling smugly at the two of us.

We walked to the train station, choosing the last train car and taking a seat side by side.

"So what are you cooking for us?" I asked, fingers moving expertly as I signed.

"It's a surprise."

"Can you even cook?" I asked, laughing at the affronted look on his face.

"I can cook." he replied, his fingers moving without fumbling even a little bit. "Be prepared to be knocked off your socks." he said and I laughed. At the next stop, there was a group of girls who sat opposite us. They took one look at Wren and they turned red, whispering to themselves.

I looked at Wren, signing. "Someone is popular. . ." I teased and he rolled his eyes at me. I couldn't hold back my laugh and slapped my hand over my mouth as I laughed, trying to muffle the sound. The girls were now looking at me now too.

One of the girls waved at Wren who just gave her a blank expression. Oh yeah, he does this a lot. It's like he shuts down when it comes to other people besides I and Desmond. He used to do that a lot back when I used to not creepily stare at him on the train.

Not going to let other people ruin the fun, I raised my hands and signed. "Knock knock."

Wren smiled playfully and I felt the breath being punched out of me swiftly.  His fingers moved gracefully as he signed. "Who's there?"

"Doctor. . ."

"Doctor Who?"

Before I could even finish signing my response, Wren was already chuckling. He covered my hands and pushed them down. He looked mortified that he had even laughed at the joke before I had even completed it. Like he knew where I was going with it already.

"That was terrible. . ."

"You didn't even let me finish it." I huffed, trying not to pout.

"I already knew it was going to be terrible."

"But you laughed." I signed, grinning widely at Wren.

"Because you were so focused  on the very not funny joke." Wren said and I stuck my tongue out at him.

"Want to see something I designed today?" Wren asked, moving a finger in the air and over his open palm, tapping on his pinkie. I nodded in response and he took out his phone. He goes to his photos and taps on the recent one.

It was a drawing of a flower in bloom, petals open and sharp. It was just a black and white drawing of it, there were also notes written in blue pen around the drawing. Notes like - try using colored  diamonds as florets, yellow diamonds for petals? It was very cute, reading them.  He swiped right and I saw another one, it was like a pendant paper plane made out of cold blue steel. It looked so beautiful and so small.

"Do you still have this?"I signed.

Wren shakes his head. "It's a commissioned work and the owner came over to pick it." he signed after he had handed me my phone. I looked back at the design, pinching the screen so I could zoom in more. There were thin lines going through the paper plane.

"Your logo isn't on here."

"It's micro printed between the lines but they're really small so you can't see it." Wren explained. I couldn't get how suddenly fluent he has become with signing. It was not the easiest of things to learn and I know that.

I didn't ask him on the train and instead waited till we got out of the train. The station wasn't that filled up and it wasn't noisy. So I tugged on Wren's  arm and turned so I could look at him.

"How do you know how to sign? And don't say youtube."

Wren's eyes widened and he looked like he had been caught. He doesn't say or sign anything for a couple of seconds and then he's pulling out his phone. He typed for a couple of minutes before handing the phone to me.

"I actually did learn from youtube and some websites online. The only thing is that I have a photographic memory and I have literally been watching sign language videos for dummies ever since I met you and I also practice from time to time. That's why I am good at it now."

I looked at the words he had typed and then at Wren.

"Every day?" the words came out of my mouth before I could stop it.

Wren nods.

"Why?" I-

Wren was putting it in this effort. He was putting in a lot of effort and it made me feel very special but a part of me wanted to know why.

"Because I want to spend more time with you. Because I want to get to know you. You are the first person that I have ever been interested in. The only one who makes me feel this way."  Wren signed, his fingers moving swiftly and he looked so sure of himself, of what he was saying. "I like you, Bailey." he signed and said at the same time.

I was so happy. It was like a dream come true for me because of what my husband had said.

Because of what Wren had said.

"I like you too." I signed, my smile so big on my face. "I like you a lot."
