Chapter 10

McCoy (3)

Maybe not the Luna

My brother was waiting for me on the edge of the training field; he had been all day. According to the beta who came to talk to us after the first fight while we were resting, we were to have contact with accepted members of the pack once evaluations were over. he inspected us and berated us as he talked. In this pack, they play it bad cop, fair cop.

I could get behind following the Alpha. So far, all his speeches had been impartial, but I can read a wolf, and he was strong and fair. I didn't want to go with the Alpha, but I knew I couldn't see my brother, I would not argue with him, and he gave me an excuse not to blow off Taylor.

His office was decorated minimally, and the whole packhouse had a rich but forest feel. This is what our packhouse was supposed to look like if our Alpha hadn't run the pack into the ground.

"I would like to get the feel of you and talk about what the next step for you will be." The Alpha sat at his desk, and the Gamma closed the door behind us. I knew where this was going. He was going to warn me away from issuing challenges for higher positions.

"Alpha, if I may, I do not want to be anything but a warrior. My father was a warrior, and it is all I wanted to do," I clarified.

"So you are afraid," the Alpha said

"He is probably thinking he can't beat me, alpha," the Gamma said

"I am just happy with the position of a warrior."

"it is better to be a big fish in a small pond. I get it, warrior. You probably couldn't keep up a higher rank anyway. That is fine." The Alpha was pushing me. I don't know why, but I have a stronghold on my wolf, so even though he was growling and scratching to get out and show these wolves just how strong he was, I kept him in check as I have done my whole life.

"It is easier to do that than disappoint that excitable brother of his. I see him watching from the edge of the field. You are his hero, and I guess you can't risk that changing," the Gamma pushed. "Maybe I could take him under my wing or you alpha."

"yes, give him something to aspire to instead of a washed-up warrior who is just fine where he is." The Alpha gave me a side-eye before the Gamma pushed me over the edge.

"It isn't like he has his father to aspire to anymore." blind with rage, it was as if there was lightning in my veins. My body was a machine, and I had no control over it. I came back to reality in the vice grip of the alpha blood on my hands and splattered on my face. I had broken the Gamma's nose and several ribs before the Alpha got me under control. My breath was coming out in heaves as the Alpha gave me time to cool down. The Gamma was on the floor staring at me; I was about to apologize when his face split into a wide smile. "I knew it," he exclaimed

"If I let you go, you won't kill my gamma?" I nodded to the Alpha, and he released me. "you have been holding back in evaluations. If I didn't know any better, I would say you have alpha blood in you."

"Help me up, man." The Gamma reached out for me to help him; he was wincing at the motion of standing but managed to keep it together. This was off. People are not ordinarily happy when I lose control.

"McCoy," the Alpha called my attention to him, "we have a proposition for you."
