Chapter 13

Baxter (4)

Maybe not the Luna

I was sitting in my office waiting to meet with my leads when Darrel and Max walked in dragging Roe.

"Tell him what you can do," Darrel said

"Have you not heard of the Silverstone family? You would think wolves would have known." Roe plopped on the couch. I knew the name Silverstone for wolves; they are like the boggy man, but I don't believe in the boggy man either.

"Are you saying the Silverstone legends are true," I asked

"legends, I like that," She mused. "Look, my family used to be warlocks, and we specialized in killing wolves to the point where we co-evolved. Think about it: the moon goddess gave you the ability to shift on the full moon, so there must have been some outside pressure to change that to the full moon whenever you feel a certain way about things."

"so we got our current range of shifting from witches," I asked incredulously.

"no, but Silverstone warlocks would attack wolf packs when it wasn't the full moon, so the pressure to protect yourself and your mates pushed you to shift outside the full moon. Also, you guys are stronger than us, so we developed mind-reading and supplemental thought exposure. You guys worked together in defense to protect your mind; hence, your mind is united under your alpha."

"For us, you are fairy tales that parents tell their kids to make them behave, or the Silverstones are going to get them," Max added. Roe nodded and tried to walk towards him, but she stumbled. And took some time to readjust herself.

"that is interesting but not surprising since Silverstones are a vicious breed." She dropped herself on Max when she finally got to him. "you smell nice."

"What is wrong with her?" I asked Darrel.

"she got drunk at the mixer trying to keep up with the wolves there," Darel answered.

"I have a meeting with the leads about McCoy, so please take her somewhere and sober her up. I don't want the pack thinking our witch contact is a drunk." My head started pounding at all this stuff.

"McCoy is a weird name," Roe mumbled as Max lifted her from the couch. "I can walk; I am not broken."

"Sorry, alpha," Darrel said as they left. My door had just closed when McCoy came bursting through it.

"Alpha," he was storming over his eyes were his wolf, and he was shaking, "I need to speak to you."

"Stand down, warrior," I demanded. People needed to learn respect, and I can't have people bursting into my office, "I said. Stand down!"

"Alpha," he struggled to catch his breath, heaving as he tried to calm down, "I'm sorry, alpha, I don't know what came over me. My wolf was freaking out, and unlike normal, I couldn't calm him."

"Take a breath, McCoy, and tell me what you came to tell me."

"I want to kill the beta." he looked me in the eye. He was serious about killing Andrew. "I pulled him off one of my old pack members, waiting to return to her original pack. Her mate had just died, and he was forcing himself on her. I almost killed him there."

"What!" I smacked a light into the wall and watched the shattered pieces hit the floor. "ok, we will have to be smart about this. I am talking to the leads tonight. I was going to convince three to stand down and not fight the challenge, so now we will convince them, but the next thing is you are going to have to take your time with the three you do fight. We want it to end late enough that I can call to have you fight your next challenger the next day."

"so, the three leads and Max," he asked.

"yes, you need to fight the tracking master, the master of the hunt, the master of arms, and the Gamma."
