Kiara's POV
With slow and steady steps, we reached the hall and guess what? I didn't trip or even falter when I came down. I was a second away from pumping my fist in air and doing a victory dance.
As my eyes took in the hall, I blinked.
"Uh... I think your dad said it was a small get-together." I said, my eyes never leaving the scene in front of me.
There were around 200 people present.
He scoffed, tugging on his collar with the hand that wasn't around me. "And you believed him? If he says it's a small party, just know that there will be enough people to fill a cricket ground."
If this was 'small', I really didn't want to know what a 'big' party is.
The place looked extravagant as ever. A huge chandelier hung in the middle and the decorations were perfect, enhancing the beauty of the mansion. Waiters moved around with trays in their hands, people chatted and laughed as a soft tune played in the background.
As soon as we stepped down the last stair, one of the cameramen noticed us and rushed in our direction and the others followed his lead.
Time to show-off some acting skills.
"Didn't you say that paparazzi weren't allowed?" I spoke through gritted teeth, fake-smiling at the cameras while the cameramen yelled at us to look in their direction.
"Yeah, but these are from those media companies that we own." He answered, facing the cameras.
I turned to him. "And is this necessary?" I asked, awarding him with another of my forced smiles.
They say that your eyes often express what you can't say and looking into his black orbs, I could easily make out what he was actually feeling -
Although I'm smiling, I'll still run a car over you.
A smirk rested on my lips and I answered him in my own way-
Don't worry, I'll mess with the car's engine so that you'll smash the car in a pole and immediately die.
"I need an Oscar for my acting." Brushing imaginary dust from his shoulder, I smiled sweetly at him.
"And I need a bravery award for keeping up with you." His eyes darted to me and I clenched my fist, not letting my anger show.
Breathe in, breathe out. It's not that hard.
I was so tempted to scratch his face like a wild cat. Instead, I settled with fantasizing about throwing him in a pool of piranhas.
Breaking eye contact, Arjun gestured for the cameramen to stop as they parted to make way for us.
"Ladies and gentlemen." Mr. Singhania's voice resounded in the hall and I angled my head left to find him standing with a mic in one hand and a glass of champagne in another.
"I would like to raise the toast for my son and his wife." He raised the glass, glancing at us with a soft smile and everyone applauded. "I pray that they live a long and wonderful life together."
Sir, pray that one day you don't find one of us with a knife, surrounded by the cold blood and dead body of the other.
"Enjoy the party." He announced, earning a loud cheer from his audience.
People came and congratulated us, some shaking hands and some even hugging me excitedly as if I was their long-lost twin while I stood there as still as a statue.
I didn't even know these people.
Sometime later, Mrs. Singhania walked over to us. From the corner of my eyes, I peeked at Arjun, trying to observe his reaction but he seemed pretty bored and ignorant.
"Kia!" Mrs. Singhania exclaimed happily and wrapped her arms around me, taking me with surprise. I patted her back awkwardly, not knowing how to react.
"You look lovely, dear." She gushed and I turned beetroot red. "I know Shreya would justify to your beauty."
"Thanks." Giving her a bashed smile, I stepped back as her gaze fell on Arjun.
"And you look good, Arjun." She spoke calmly but her face and the slight tremor in her voice gave away her nervousness. Without sparing a second glance at her, Arjun walked away from there as if she was invisible.
"I'll... uh- I'll just check over a few things." She tried to smile but failed as she avoided my eyes and went away.
Staring after her worriedly, I sighed and wrapped arms around me. I felt bad for her. Chewing my lower lip, I realized that Arjun was nowhere to be seen.
The arrogant chipmunk left me alone.
I tried to find any familiar face around and that's when I spotted my parents and rushed to them.
"Dad! Mom!" With a wide smile on my face, I hugged them.
"Honey, why is your dress torn?" Dad frowned, pointing at the slit on my left side and I giggled, rolling my eyes.
"And where's the cloth at your back?"
"Anand!" Mom chided him gently and I laughed out loud. Dad was always protective of his daughters.
Gosh! I missed all this.
"How have you been?" I couldn't seem to wipe off the smile on my face.
"Well, how would you know?" He teased. "You were pretty busy with your married life."
"Dad." I stared at him, deadpanned. "We met last Sunday. And I call you every day."
"Okay, okay." He smiled. "We're good."
"Tina is not here?" My eyebrows furrowed together as I asked about my sister.
"She's on a trip with her friends." Mom explained.
"Apparently some guy friends too." Dad grumbled but sobered up quickly when mom gave him a side-eye. I muffled a laugh and shook my head.
"Forget about it. You tell me. Where's our son-in-law?" Mom looked around.
Probably glaring at some poor waiter cause his drink was not filled up to the appropriate level.
I followed her lead as my eyes wandered around and finally settled at the handsome devil. He was talking to some people, who seemed to be his business associates.
While conversing, his eyes caught mine and I gestured towards my parents, silently praying that he wouldn't ignore me. Mom and dad didn't need to know how things were between us. They were already stressed about this whole ordeal and worrying them about me was the last thing I wanted to do.
Thankfully, Arjun understood my signal and walked in our direction.
Please, please, please behave civilly for once in your life.
My heart literally lurched into my mouth as Arjun approached us. He greeted my parents with a small nod and a kind smile and I released a breath that I didn't know I was holding. My shoulders slumped and I relaxed a bit. As they exchanged greetings, I couldn't help but stare at Arjun and how good he looked. His suit fitted him perfectly, accentuating his body and giving a glimpse of his muscles beneath. A stubble was growing on his face, which made his jaw look even more sharp.
Stop drooling in front of your parents.
Believe me, I tried.
"I hope she's not bothering you." Mom spoke when I tuned into their conversation.
Arjun's face broke into a mild smirk. "Of course not. Just stumbling here and there."
What?
"Excuse me." I crossed arms over my chest, giving him a stink-eye. "I don't stumble, okay?"
"Of course, and I'm Rudolph the reindeer who goes around prancing with Santa Claus during Christmas." It was dad who spoke this time.
Ignoring my horrified face, mom turned to Arjun. "You know Arjun, when she was 13, there was a guy in her class who once held her hand while walking and she got so flustered that she tripped on a plain road, landing straight in mud and bringing the boy down along with her."
I gaped at them as heat crawled to my face. I thought we were never going to discuss this incident again.
"After that, whenever that guy would come in front of Kia, she would run away."
Arjun's head fell back as he laughed out loud after hearing the whole story while I stared at him, gob smacked.
He laughed! Not a snort or a chuckle, but a full-blown laugh with his teeth on display.
Someone pinch me.
He can laugh! I thought this function wasn't installed in him at the time of his birth.
Dad glanced at his watch. "Ah, we must go now. I have an early meeting tomorrow."
"I'll escort you to the parking." Arjun said and I almost gasped in surprise, my face incredulous.
Since when did he become this chivalrous?
Was he coming down with something?
I was tempted to lay my hand across his forehead to check for fever when dad's voice snapped me from my thoughts to show him to a doctor. "No, it's fine."
"I insist."
Okay, he was not Arjun. Definitely not him.
"You stay here and attend the guests while I walk them out." Arjun told me and I looked at him suspiciously. Bidding my parents goodbye, I watched as they talked with Arjun all the way out.
What if he plans to kill me and is extracting important information about me from my parents?
A waiter passed by and I stopped him to ask for a non-alcoholic drink and then thanked him as he handed me a glass.
"And you are polite as ever." I turned around, only to find the brunette grinning at me, his green eyes shining brightly.
"Rohan." I chirped happily, flinging my arms around him in a bear hug. "I didn't hear from you since a long time."
"Yeah, actually there was some problem back in England, so I had to go back there."
"It's good to see you."
"Hmm." He nodded but seemed distracted as his green eyes continuously seemed to search for something.
"Are you looking for someone?"
"Maa- I mean no. No." Chuckling nervously, he shoved his hands in his pockets.
"Sure." I hid my amused smile as I took a sip from my drink. It tasted sweet.
Rohan scratched his head, looking away from me but his face brightened immediately as he enveloped Arjun-who had surprisingly apparated here-in a hug. "Hey, man."
Arjun smiled at him-one of the few occasions that I was going to mark in my calendar- and clapped his back.
"My lady." A sub-conscious smile spread on my face, accompanied with a roll of eyes on hearing the voice.
I turned to my right and found Sid bowing down in front of me with his left hand outstretched. I put my hand in his and he straightened up. "You look beautiful, miss." I laughed gleefully at his fake British accent.
He's a complete dork.
"And here's the evil beast who had kidnapped the fair maiden." Sid narrowed his eyes as he stared at Arjun, one hand propped on his waist and another holding an imaginary sword.
"Don't worry, madame. Your knight in shining armor is here." Sid addressed me and I rolled my eyes at his dramatics, smiling nonetheless.
Honestly, he and Anushka would make a great pair, both being drama queens.
"Ah, you're still alive." Rohan chuckled.
"Not for long, though." Arjun added and Sid's smile vanished.
"You won't kill me, would you?" Sid panicked while Arjun just gave a blank stare in return.
"Look at you. Looking decent for once in your life." I teased Sid, trying to change the topic because a part of me doubted if Arjun would actually murder his best friend.
He won't, right?
"And where's Trisha?" I asked. He seemed excited when he talked about her earlier at Laura's store.
"Oh yeah. Trisha..." He wondered hesitantly, clearing his throat.
Something's fishy.
"Sid."
I flinched as a sharp, nasal voice hit my ears.
A girl in a short, tight hot pink dress came into my view, her brown locks flowing till her shoulder, surrounding her oval face. She had large, black eyes which seemed even larger due to her enormous winged eye-liner. Her each step screamed arrogance as she cat-walked towards us, swaying her hips, a proud smile tugging on her lips.
Usually, I'm not the one to judge people by their appearance. And she was beautiful, no doubt but she was giving me negative vibes.
"Hey, baby." She chirped enthusiastically, kissing Sid's cheek.
"Hi, Trish." Sid smiled, his hand around the girl's waist. "I wo-"
"Sid!" She screeched, stomping her foot angrily.
"What?" Sid looked at her bewildered.
"I told you to wear a pink tie." She complained. "I wanted us to match."
Sid rolled his eyes, his voice resigned. "Trisha, do you really think that I would wear a hot pink tie to a party?"
Rohan sniggered.
"So what?"
"This...is Trisha?" I observed Arjun as his eyes shifted from the girl to Sid. Pursing his lips, he looked like he was about to say something but changed his mind.
"Who else do you think?" The girl flipped her hair and laughed which sounded more like a donkey braying loudly and I almost dropped my glass on hearing her laugh.
I can finally die peacefully knowing that someone has a worse laugh than me.
Arjun gave a small nod. "I'm Arjun Singhania."
"Of course. Everyone knows that." Rolling a strand of hair around her index finger, she bit her lip coyly as her eyes lingered on Arjun.
Was she... Was she trying to hit on him?
I guffawed lightly and pressed fingers on my lips, trying to smother my ridiculous grin. Arjun stared at her repulsed like she was a leech ready to suck his blood.
Arjun came to stand beside me. "And this is my wife, Kiara Singhania."
Trisha arched one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows as she studied me. "Nice to meet you."
I didn't like the tone in which she spoke.
"Pleasure's all mine." Not. My cheeks were hurting from smiling all the time, fake or not. Most of the time it was fake though.
"I'm Rohan Singhania." Rohan added.
"Ahha." She shook hands with him, a little too flirty.
"I'd love to chat with you people but I have more important things to do right now." She ran a hand through her hair, speaking with a tone of superiority and looked at Sid. "I want you to meet some of my friends. Come."
"Uh. Why don't you go and I'll join you in a few minutes?" He offered.
"Okay." She sighed. "Miss me." She kept her hand on Sid's chest, making heart eyes at him. Sid looked really uncomfortable as if he had suddenly become oxygen deficient.
We stared at her while she walked away from there and then all three pair of eyes turned to Sid as he looked like a deer caught in headlights. A few seconds passed in silence and then Rohan and I burst out laughing. Arjun still sported his ever-boring look but one could easily spot the tinge of amusement on his face.
"Seriously, Sid?" I managed to ask in between my fits of laughter.
"This was your girlfriend?" Rohan shook his head, emphasizing on 'this'.
"I didn't know you dropped your standards?" Arjun asked when we had finally stopped laughing.
For once in my life, I agreed with Arjun.
Sid cringed slightly. "Well, she seemed nice in the start. And she is really good in be-"
"I don't want to hear that." I exclaimed hurriedly, covering my left ear with my left hand since the other one was holding the glass.
I could hear their laughter. Idiots.
"And she isn't my girlfriend. We just went on a couple of dates, that's all." Sid said. "I better go and meet her friends." He sighed, the corners of his eyes crinkling in distaste and went after her.
Rohan clapped his hands together. "And me being the amazing friend I am, would go after him and make sure that the witch doesn't claw out his eyes."
He started walking away, muttering to himself. "Did you see her nails?"
"You have as weird friends as mine." I commented.
"Yeah, I am surrounded by weird people."
Of course, he was talking about me.
I was going to retort with a good comeback when a couple approached Arjun and the men shook hands, exchanging pleasantries.
"Kiara." Arjun beckoned me to come closer. I went and he placed a hand on my back causing me to suck in a sharp breath. I shivered at the feel of his warm hand on my back as goosebumps covered my arms.
This meet-and-greet session was becoming tiresome.
"That's Mr. Gupta. One of our major shareholders and the head of our branch in Mumbai. And this is his wife."
Smiling politely, I shook hands with the couple, trying to ignore the strange, tingling feeling of his hand on my exposed back.
"I must say, we were quite astonished when we learnt that Arjun got married at such a young age." Mrs. Gupta spoke. "True love really knows no bounds."
Okay this was a bit extreme.
"Yes." Leaning my head on Arjun's shoulder, I tried to appear lovestruck though I was sure I resembled a sick person. "I really love my darling."
I bit my lip, trying to subdue the laugh that threatened to escape my lips as I felt Arjun go rigid.
Don't get me wrong, I hate such cringy nicknames and all this mushy stuff but the reaction on the Devil's face was worth it.
His fingers tightened around my waist as he nodded. "Likewise. We truly are made for each other. Right, cupcake?" He glanced down at me.
Cupcake? Cupcake? Cupcake??
Seriously?
Well, if he really wanted to play this game.
"Of course, sugar plum." My extra sweet smile was enough to give diabetes to someone. His smile dropped but he maintained his facade. His eyes were challenging as he quirked an eyebrow at me and I met his stare with my head high.
We were busy shooting lasers at each other when Mrs. Gupta gushed. "Aww. Look at them. Such a sweet couple. They look like they are drowning in each other's eyes."
I would be glad if he actually drowned.
"So, when are the babies coming?"
Thankfully, I wasn't drinking at that time otherwise I'd have answered her in a way that she wouldn't have liked much, which basically involved me decorating her pale-yellow chiffon gown with a mouthful of drink mixed with a little bit of saliva. But that didn't stop me from choking on my own spit. I coughed vigorously, my chest heaving with strain and Arjun patted my back firmly. He took my glass from my hand, giving it to a waiter nearby and rubbed my back while I held his other arm.
"Relax, princess." Arjun looked thoroughly amused by the situation.
Why was this funny to him?
And why the hell was everyone so keen on us having babies?
I mean, have you looked at him? His babies will be so cute and beautiful.
Um, hello? You are my conscience. You are supposed to support me, not him.
Nah, he's way better.
"Not anytime soon." I croaked, standing properly.
"Well, you never know." Mrs. Gupta giggled mischievously.
Oh god.
I was going to faint if she continued with her innuendos.
"Where did you meet, by the way?" Mr. Gupta questioned.
Arjun beat me to it. "A forest party."
My eyes snapped to him, amusement written all over his face while his lips were stretched in a soft smirk. I had to bite my lip to keep in my laughter but one look at the bewildered expression on Mrs. Gupta's face and I couldn't hold it anymore. I laughed lightly.
"A forest party?" She echoed doubtfully.
We both nodded, as if sharing a private joke and we actually were. I had blurted out the same answer to the question at our engagement.
"What's that?"
"You don't know what a forest party is?" Arjun feigned surprise and it took a lot of self-control to not start laughing like a chimpanzee choking to death.
When she shook her head in denial, I explained further. "What he means to say is that there was a party in one of his tree houses. That's where we met."
Now when I thought about it, it was such a ridiculous and lame answer I've ever heard in my whole life. How did I even come up with such answer?
The couple in front of us nodded in understanding and both the men involved in some boring talk about business.
"Well, well." Mrs. Gupta was telling me about a new affair of Mrs. Whatever-her-name-was when a new voice interjected.
Riya. Arjun's sister. Step sister.
When I got to know about Arjun's real mom's death, I decided to google about him. Something that I should've done a lot earlier but my procrastinating self was too lazy to do anything.
I'd rather not make the same mistake again.
Apparently, Roshni was a widow. Her husband died 10 years ago due to cancer and she met Mr. Singhania 2 years ago.
While I liked Roshni, I couldn't say the same about her daughter. I remember the day when I met the Singhania family and how she ignored me like I wasn't even present in the room.
Riya's heels clicked on the floor as she strode over to us. Sending a sharp glare in her way, Arjun ignored her presence and continued talking to Mr. Gupta.
She stopped right in front of us as Mr. and Mrs. Gupta took their leave. "If it isn't my dear brother." Her smirk was mocking and her eyes travelled to me, scanning me from head to toe as her lips formed a sneer. "And my sister-in-law."
My eyes narrowed slightly at her as she addressed me. Why did it sound more like a cuss word coming out of her mouth?
"How have you been, brother?"
"Good. But since you are here now, I'm not really sure." Arjun retorted. This wiped the smile from her face.
I had a sudden urge to hoot and clap like a fan cheering for their favourite cricket team.
Maintaining her composure, she sneered. "I see the arrogance hasn't left."
"Neither has your bratty attitude."
Hadn't there been so many people around us, I would have dramatically wiped my proud tears and patted Arjun's back in encouragement.
Knowing that she couldn't really win this verbal fight, her gaze fell back on me. "She's still here, I see."
Excuse me. The said 'she' is standing right in front of you.
"A surprise you hadn't dumped her yet." She taunted. "You know, just like the others."
She was pushing her buttons; I could see it.
I dared not interrupt her because what could I even say?
"Whatever happens in my personal life is none of your business. It would be better if you keep your long nose out of it." Arjun shot back.
"And what happened with Meera?" Ignoring his latest remark, she feigned confusion as she pretended to think about it, tapping her chin with her index finger.
I could see Arjun tensing up at the name. His jaw locked tightly, his left hand forming a tight fist.
"It doesn't concern you." Arjun's voice was low and hard.
"She left, didn't she?" Riya mocked, provoking Arjun even more. "Tsk, tsk. Poor you."
Oh lord. This wasn't going to end well.
Who was Meera?
"Shut the fuck up." Arjun said coldly, his voice a few octaves deeper and raising with each word.
He was furious, I knew it.
My eyes flitted around the hall helplessly when they stopped at Sid, standing a few feet away from us. His worried gaze heightened my nerves even more.
Why was I so worried? I didn't know. Maybe because I've seen his anger before.
No matter how good he looked, his angry mode was not a pretty sight.
"Do something." Sid mouthed to me.
"What?" I whispered back.
What did he think I'd be able to do?
Should I say something to Arjun?
As if he'll listen to you.
True that.
People nearby had stopped talking and were staring at us as if their favourite TV series finale was going on.
Don't these people have anything better to do?
If I didn't stop Arjun, he would definitely create a big scene.
Go kiss him. That ought to distract him.
I stopped thinking for a second and my face turned blank.
A reasonable option, please.
Arjun took a threatening step forward and I immediately held his hand, ignoring the ringing sirens of warning in my head.
What the hell are you doing?
He stopped, his back tensing and craned his head to look at me, his expressions screaming danger. Looking at him with scared eyes, I softly shook my head, my front teeth digging in my lower lip as my heart thudded loudly in my chest. His jaw clenched tightly, the vein in his forehead throbbing.
I might have asked for a death wish.
My fingers entwined his and he looked down at our hands and then back at me.
My brain was yelling at me to snatch my hand from his and run away as if there was a cockroach after me but I still stood my ground.
I waited, with bated breath as he casted a cold glance at her. Time seemed to have stopped as Arjun's hold on my hand tightened and without any word, he walked away from there, dragging me with him.
That actually worked?
"Ow... Oh... Wait." One hand in his and another holding my gown, I tried to keep up with his pace and avoid falling down.
Marching further into the mansion, he led us away from the hall and entered a random room. Releasing my hand, he sat at the edge of the bed, taking in ragged breaths, trying to calm his rage. His hand fisted and unfisted, his elbows resting on his knees and the muscle in his jaw ticking. His eyes were set on the floor and he looked furious. I watched as his muscles tensed and his face grew darker every passing second.
Should I go? Or should I wait?
Maybe I should say something?
"I love Chris Hemsworth." I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind and immediately clamped a hand over my over-enthusiastic mouth.
I need a filter over my mouth.
His posture became stiffer, if it was possible as his head whipped to my side. The look on his face was comical. It seemed as if he was still not able to comprehend the information I had given him. Neither was I.
What the hell did I just say to him?
He looked like he was thinking of booking a bed for me in a mental asylum.
"I...uh... I should go." Shutting my eyes, I spoke hurriedly and turned around, ready to find a solid wall and bang my head in it when a hand enclosed my wrist and pulled me down.
"Sit."
I sat on the bed with a bounce and faced the devil himself.
"Talk."
"Excuse me?" I stared at him dumbly, my eyes round and huge. Mr. If-you-say-one-more-word-I'll-strangle-your-neck was asking me to talk?
"Talk. Calm me down. Do something. Anything. Before I end up killing her." He growled, his eyes swirling with rage.
My eyes grew wide as I heard him.
How do I calm him down?
Should I pat his head?
Yeah, he's a dog, right? Go play fetch with him.
Should I sing to him?
Yeah, why not? Sing him a lullaby if you want. And lull him to sleep.
Even a cat could sing better than me. So, unless I wanted to anger him more, it would be better if I kept my mouth shut.
Then what to say?
Then again, my brain worked in overdrive and formulated another fantastic response. "I want to be a werewolf."
Can someone please shoot me?
Seriously, Kia?
Next you know, I'll be having a kitty party with him, gossiping about my arch enemies and discussing fantasies about Channing Tatum in Magic Mike while we braid each other's hair.
He was going to call the asylum anytime now, I could feel it.
He rubbed a hand over his face and sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Continue."
"I like reading books." I blabbered. "But I prefer books with happy endings."
He asked me to talk, right?
"Imagine how cool it would have been if we had wings. We could simply fly wherever we wanted to go. Or if we could have unicorns as pets. I would love to ride a unicorn."
"And I also think you look really hot in this suit. Though you look hot all the time but I will never admit i-" I pressed a hand over my gaping mouth.
I'm officially shutting up from right now.
Arjun's eyes snapped towards me, his lips twitching in an almost non-existent smile as a dimple appeared on his left cheek. His eyes bored into my saucer-shaped, chocolate brown ones and I whipped my head forward, too embarrassed to say anything.
Why, God why, did I always end up embarrassing myself?
"And I also love chocolates." I added quietly as an afterthought.
What?
I'm sorry I couldn't stop myself.
"I think we established that a long time ago." His amused tone caused me to lift my eyes to him and a nervous giggle escaped me.
We fell into silence after that, the only sound that followed was the tick-tock of a wall clock. Then again, it's me we are talking about and I couldn't keep quiet for long.
"Thanks, by the way." I said after some time. His breathing had become even and he wasn't as rigid as before.
"Why?"
"For acting nicely in front of my parents."
He merely shrugged. "They seemed to be nice people."
"Their daughter is also very nice, you know."
"I am sure Tina is a nice person. I wonder what went wrong with the other one."
"I was talking about their elder daughter." I huffed. "And how do you know about Tina?"
"Your parents told me."
"When?"
"When I walked them out."
"Stop teaming with my parents against me." I jokingly bumped my shoulder into his, surprising both him and me.
What was I doing? When did I become this comfortable with him?
Although, he didn't seem to mind my action.
"Do we have to go back there?" I asked, my gaze on my feet as I swung my legs.
"Considering we are the host of the party? Yes."
I groaned in response.
My eyes roamed on his face, my eyes squinting. "Are you sure you're not going to hulk out?"
He chuckled lowly. And it managed to bring a small smile on my face too. Biting my inner cheek, I looked in my lap, my hands wrung together.
"I'll try." He said, his voice light and amused.
"Good." I nodded, pressing my lips.
He stood up, smoothening the crease on his coat and extended his hand. "Let's get over with this stupid party."
I laced my arm with his without a second thought as we both walked out, thinking what new drama awaited us.
A/N- Would you rather date a famous actor or a billionaire?
