Book 4: Chapter 21: Patch 4.0: Ferrets and Dogs
The True Endgame
Fenrir and Cassiel meet back up with Tabitha on The Shoebillâs deck.
Oleander and Corwin are there as well.
âYou know, Olly, I donât think Iâve seen you play a game this much since back in the day,â Fenrir says.
âHey, Fenny, and yeah. If Iâm not studying, Iâm playing this now,â Oleander explains. âIt means more time to spend with Cor!â He nuzzles up against Corwinâs side, getting a few headpats in return which reminds Fenrir of what he was just doing with Cassiel in reality.
Cassiel looks up at him, knowing what heâs thinking, and narrows her eyes at him.
âYou going to change your hair here, too?â Fenrir asks her.
âOoh! Cass Cass changed her hair? Whatâs it like now?â Oleander asks with excited eyes.
Fenrir looks at Cassiel to see if sheâll answer it herself.
âItâs⦠shorter now,â Cassiel answers.
âAnd super fluffy,â Fenrir adds on.
Cassiel elbows him in the side, but with hardly a fourth of the force she used to use.
âHmm. I canât really imagine Cass Cass having fluffy hair,â Oleander says. âYou should totally change your hair here, too!â
âWeâll see,â Cassiel replies. âI â I donât think my real hair would match my style here. Itâs moreâ¦â
âGirly,â Fenrir says and gets elbowed again.
âAnd I donât really look like that here.â
âDid somebody say style?â Azalabulia says, striking a cool pose to show off her own style.
âOi, didnât I tell ya to stop that? Youâre goinâ to be single forever if you keep actinâ so lame,â Tabitha calls Azalabulia out.
Azalabulia slouches her shoulders and says, âS-sorry.â
Fenrir has only seen Azalabulia and Tabitha interact a few times ever since the former joined the crew, but Tabitha dominated each one of those interactions. Azalabulia just always loses her ability to act cool and confident around Tabitha.
âPl-please donât hit me with your hammer again,â Azalabulia says with watery eyes.
Now Fenrir knows why Azalabulia is so submissive toward Tabitha.
âStop overreactinâ. That was an accident anyways,â Tabitha says, rubbing her forehead.
âHey, Aza,â Oleander says, âwhat can of style do you think would fit Cass Cass other than this whole holy thing?â
Azalabulia shies away from Tabitha and looks Cassiel over. âA fallen angel!â Azalabulia says.
âYouâve got to go cuter and girlier since her new hair is like that, I guess.â
âH-hey, I never said that,â Cassiel says.
âA girly fallen angel!â Azalabulia tries.
âStill not cute enough,â Oleander says.
âI think sheâd look cute as a dog girl,â Fenrir says and gets yet another elbow hitting his side, but this time with more force.
Azalabuliaâs eyes go wide. âYes! A â a hellhound! She could dye her hair red and black, cut it short, wear chains, black armor, and have a hellhoundâs ears and tail!â she suggests.
âI canât see Cass Cass like that at all,â Oleander says.
âPlease,â Fenrir says, looking at Cassiel with puppy eyes. âBecome a hellhound girl.â
âNo,â Cassiel says.
âYou can talk about all of that some other time,â Tabitha says, walking up into the center of the group. âThis is more important. Me and Red figured out what weâre goinâ to need, and the sooner we get started, the better.â
Tabitha goes over everything that her and Rao discussed and planned.
One heck of a shopping list is the result.
Theyâre going to have to chop down no insignificant number of trees for all the wood they need, will have to make dozens of trips from the mountain down the river to the cityâs future site, and then there are all the miscellaneous materials required.
They may not need that many different materials, but they need an absolute ton of the materials that they do need.
âHere,â Tabitha says, coming up from below deck.
She sets various tools onto the deck. They are makeshift pickaxes and axes.
âI made these earlier. Theyâll be enough to cut through some of these trees and to mine some stone, and I can upgrade them as we go. That should probably be one of your first jobs: go chop down some of them steel oaks. Probably goinâ to take a couple of axes just to get through one tree, but I can make an even better axe with that wood, and then cutting down the rest wonât be so hard,â Tabitha explains.
Azalabulia says, âI will burn down the forests with my darkâ"
Tabitha takes her hammer off of her back.
âI â I thought you said it was an accident!â Azalabulia whines.
âIt was,â Tabitha says.
âI donât think burning down the forest would do us much good when we need it to build,â Fenrir says.
âListen to the dog.â
Azalabulia whines and walks away, mumbling to herself.
âWhyâd ya pick her up again?â Tabitha asks Fenrir.
âShe begged to join us, and I figured it wouldnât hurt to have her around,â Fenrir explains and then leans in to whisper, âSheâs crazy powerful. Just donât praise her when she can hear you or she wonât shut up about it.â
âBe nice,â Cassiel says, grabbing Fenrir by his ear and tugging him back. âSheâs just roleplaying. The game is full of people like her.â
âSo, hellhound?â
âNo.â
âIâm goinâ to smack you next if ya donât take this seriously,â Tabitha tells Fenrir. âWe need to actually get this underway. Canât stay livinâ on this boat forever with what little supplies weâve got left.â
âAlright, alright. Youâre right. Weâll go ahead and get started today,â Fenrir says, picking up one of the axes. Itâs got a pretty simple wooden handle, and the head of it looks like itâs made out of sharpened scrap metal from Tabithaâs overflowing backpack of strange items and materials. Even though it looks poorly made, itâs sturdy and Fenrir has no idea how she managed to get the blade of it as sharp as it is.
âSo, steel oaks first, right?â Fenrir confirms with Tabitha.
Tabitha says, âRight. Red told me there were exposed metals up at the mountains. We use the axes to chop down some steel oaks, we use that to make better axes and pickaxes, then we use those toââ
âThen whyâd you already make pickaxes if weâre just going to make better ones before we even use them?â
âOi, did I say to ask me questions?â
âYou didnât think of that, did you?â
âListen here, wolf boy.â
âIâm listening,â Fenrir says after a couple moments of silence.
âKeep on listeninâ.â
âWh-why?â
âSo ya learn how to.â
Oleander and Cassiel both try not to laugh at Fenrir getting told by somebody half his height, but then Tabitha sets her sights on Oleander and says, âDeer boy, if I see any of that shit â and ya know what Iâm talkinâ about, on my baby one more time, then Iâm tossinâ ya overboard in your sleep.â
âHear that, Cor? Donât let any of it out,â Oleander loudly whispers to Corwin, causing the blonde man to burn with embarrassment equal to how brightly Cassiel can blush.
Fenrir is torn between being disgusted and finding it hilarious.
âNow! Wolf boy, you might be the captain here, but me and Red have superiority when it comes to all this buildinâ. You can call me âbossâ until weâve got this city runninâ,â Tabitha tells Fenrir.
âAlright, boss. Whenâs my lunch break? How about my pay?â Fenrir teases her and instantly regrets it as she pulls her hammer off of her back, smacking the end of it against her palm.
âGot anythinâ else to say?â
âI want to unionize.â
A vein pops in Tabithaâs head, causing Fenrir to take the makeshift axe and jump off of The Shoebill before Tabitha can launch him off of it herself with her hammer!
Tabitha turns around to face the rest of the crew still onboard and in-game.
âAlright! Iâm all fired up!â Tabitha declares with a wide smile. âGotta love when you can have banter like that with a friend.â
âWait, youâre not actually mad?â Cassiel asks.
âCourse not! Why would I be mad? His idea to do this whole city thing has got me more excited than Iâve been in a long time! Itâs just more entertaininâ for ourselves and everybody else if we play around, ainât it? Like ya said, roleplay.â
Azalabulia comes rushing up to Tabitha and says, âAh! So you are a roleplayer! Weâre the saââ
âNo.â
Azalabuliaâs excitement gets deflated even faster than it was inflated.
âAnd I wasnât jokinâ about tossinâ you overboard if I grab the steerinâ wheel one more time only to get sticky hands,â Tabitha says while directing a glare at Oleander.
Oleander scratches the back of his head and says, âSorry⦠at â at least you wonât have to worry about that once we build our own house, right?â
âIâll build your house. I have to make sure it has thick enough walls so that nobody has to listen to you two lovers going at it all day and night. Not goinâ to install any windows in it, either.â
