Book 1: Chapter 45: Patch 8.0: How to Train Your Crew
The True Endgame
Satisfied with the progress that Serra and Cassiel have made, Fenrir lets Morven and his crew have the fishing spot for their own practice. Fenrir didnât get any worthwhile practice himself, but thereâs plenty of time before the tournament to come back.
âSo, what did you two think?â Fenrir asks the girls.
âWas fun,â Serra says with a thumbs-up.
âIt⦠was better than I thought it would be,â Cassiel admits.
âIâm glad you two enjoyed it,â Fenrir says. Heâs good at telling when people are being genuine or not, and he doesnât detect any falsities in their statements. They genuinely enjoyed themselves and he couldnât be happier about it. As cheesy as it makes him feel, knowing that theyâre finding fun in fishing is the most fun heâs had in this game thus far.
The Shoebill is docked back into its âguest parkingâ spot.
There is commotion on the docks as a girl with bright orange hair runs around harassing various crews along the pier.
âCome on! Need an engineer? Iâll do it for free!â the girl shouts, offering herself to everybody she sees. âYou there! Let me â ah! Where are you going? Why are you runninâ from me?!â she chases after a frightened man for a short while before getting distracted by somebody else. âYou there! Lookinâ for an engineer? Iâll â wait! Why does everybody keep runninâ from me!?â she shouts, chasing after three men all escaping together. âSomebody let me join their damn crew for the tournament!â
âI⦠think we should leave before she sees us,â Cassiel suggests. Serra expresses her agreement by tugging on Fenrirâs shirt.
Yet, he doesnât budge. When the girls look at him, they see a man who looks like he just got an idea.
The two girls look at each other. They have a bad feeling about this.
The orange-haired girl spins around and happens to make eye contact with Fenrir.
She charges straight at him with starry eyes. âYou there! Need an engineer?! Iâll do it for free! Just let me work on your ship!â she shouts at Fenrir.
âYou there!â Fenrir shouts, pointing at the girl running straight toward him. âNeed a crew? You can join ours for free! Just work on our ship.â
If there are two things that Fenrir can easily recognize, they are: one, when somebody is trying their best to accomplish something while nobody gives them a chance; and two, the type of person who has a few screws loose and it probably dangerous to keep around but ingenious. Fenrir has worked with many people just like her before.
âReally? Do you mean it?! Are you sure?! I mean, Iâll work on any ship, but I canât believe youâll actually take me!â the girl shouts.
Cassiel and Serra feel like this is moving way too fast. They want to interject, but they trust in Fenrirâs judgment for now.
âI do! But first, you have to tell me why everybody is so afraid of you,â Fenrir says.
âBecause every ship Iâve been on has sunk because it couldnât keep up with me.â
Cassiel and Serra both turn to look at Fenrir. Thereâs no way that he would agree to having her, right?
âI see,â he says. Serra and Cassiel are relieved to see him being serious about this. âWelcome aboard The Shoebill!â
Serra and Cassiel turn to see the orange-haired girlâs expression from being rejected, rightfully so â wait, what did he just say?
âYou â you canât seriously be taking her, can you? Didnât you just hear what she said? She said sheâs sunk every ship sheâs ever been on, and she doesnât even sound guilty about it!â Cassiel shouts.
âShe said itâs because the ships couldnât handle her. The Shoebill can handle anybody and anything,â Fenrir explains.
âThe Shoebill is just a small ship we stole from some nobodies! Itâs already in bad condition!â
âWhatâs your name?â Fenrir asks the orange-haired girl.
âStrism, Tabitha Strism!â Tabitha says.
âCan you fix our girl up and make her better than all of these other ships, Tabitha?â
âIf I canât, nobody can!â
âSee?â Fenrir asks, looking at Cassiel. âTabitha here can help us out.â
âYou have no idea who she is! We have no idea if we can trust her! What if she messes everything up? What if she breaks something or steals our ship?!â Cassiel questions, feeling like the only logical person here right now.
Rock walks up to Tabithaâs feet and sniffs her.
Tabitha crouches down and pets Rockâs head with a huge smile on her lips. âThis puppy is adorable! Iâve never seen one made out of rock before! This game is somethinâ, ainât it?â
Rock licks Tabithaâs hand and nuzzles against her.
âIf Rock likes her then sheâs okay,â Serra says.
âBe nice to our newest crewmember, Cass Cass,â Fenrir says, poking her side. The unexpected poke causes Cassiel to make a surprisingly girly squeak.
Fenrir, Serra, Rock, and Tabitha all look at Cassiel.
âI will kill you all if you say anything,â Cassiel threatens.
âI wonât say nothinâ if you let me join,â Tabitha says.
âDeal.â
âGreat!â Fenrir exclaims. âWeâre just one crewmember short now. By the way, Tabitha, what does an engineer even do in this game?â
âWell, I fix your ship up, keep her runninâ well, make some modifications â that sort of stuff! I used to work with the scholars, but our group got fired for causinâ some trouble. We got replaced by those half-goblin things up there runninâ the place now,â Tabitha explains.
âWhat sort of trouble did you cause?â
âNothinâ much. We just kinda blew up some of the city, but they repaired it in no time!â
âFair enough.â
Cassiel is regretting accepting the deal.
âWhy do you want to join a crew so badly for the tournament?â he asks.
âBecause! Everybodyâs always laughinâ at me and doubtinâ my ability. I want to prove to everybody that a few accidental explosions and failed experiments donât mean that I ainât the best engineer there is! What better way than to let my mods help a ship win the tournament? Iâve even got a schematic all prepared for catchinâ the big baby in the final round!â
âSeriously? Thatâs perfect, because I had no idea how I was going to catch that after hearing about it.â
Neither Serra nor Cassiel knows what theyâre talking about. They were too busy fishing to try and listen in on his conversation with the NPC captain.
âI just need about⦠forty gold to buy all the parts!â Tabitha says, smiling as widely as ever.
âYeah, we donât have any money,â Fenrir says.
âOh.â
âYeah.â
âTwenty gold?â
âNope.â
âTen?â
âI wish.â
âFive?â
âSure. Just kidding, no.â
ââ¦â
ââ¦â
âSo ya want me to go and mod up your ship to be the best there is, install somethinâ thatâll capture a serpent bigger than your ship likely is, all without any fundin'?â Tabitha asks.
âYou got it. Think you can do it?â Fenrir asks.
A fire lights up within Tabithaâs eyes. âYou bet I can! Iâm fired up! Such a tall order with next to no money available to fund it⦠Iâm excited! Weâre going to blast all those other ships out of the water! Weâre going to capture the big baby and bring it home to take home the trophy! Weâre going toââ
âWin this together,â Fenrir finishes her sentence, offering her a handshake.
She accepts it.
Serra and Cassiel donât exactly know whatâs going on due to how fast it all just happened, but theyâre pretty sure they just saw the foundation of another⦠bromance?
Tabitha pulls out a thin cloth from her overallsâ pocket to wrap around her forehead, going underneath her raised twin tails.
Serra likes Tabitha just because she makes Serra no longer the shortest crewmember. Tabitha is a few inches shorter than Serra and looks younger as well.
As Fenrir would describe her, she looks like a tomboyish loli.
âThis is Serra, thatâs Cassiel, and the pup down there is Rock. Weâve got two more guys who Iâll introduce you to later,â Fenrir says. âOh, sorry. And Iâm Fenrir.â
âNice to meetchaâll. Gotta ask though, Mr. Wolf. If anything, itâs kinda suspicious that ya trust me so easily. What gives?â Tabitha asks.
âThatâs easy. You remind me of myself.â
Tabitha grins from ear to ear. âGood! I can tell me and you are gonna get along, Mr. Wolf. Just show me where my new baby is and Iâll bring my tools over!â
Fenrir leads her to The Shoebillâs parking spot.
âYa sure sheâs gonna be able to keep up with me?â Tabitha asks, looking the sloop over with wary eyes. âShips bigger and stronger than this girl have failed me before. Wouldnât want us all to sink in the middle of the tournament.â
âI believe in her. You just need to believe in her too,â Fenrir says, placing a hand on Tabithaâs shoulder.
âThatâs the kind of thing I like to hear! A captainâs trust in the ship is almost as important as the engineer! Iâll go and bring all my stuff over and get to work right away. You wonât even be able to recognize her by tomorrow!â
âYou hear that, girl?â Fenrir asks. Rock looks up at him, assuming that heâs talking to her, but heâs looking at The Shoebill instead. Rock whines in jealousy. âTabitha here is going to take care of you and make you even more awesome than you already are.â
Tabitha happily runs off to collect her things.
âAre you really sure about this? What if she screws us over?â Cassiel asks Fenrir.
âWho cares? Itâs just a game. Sure, I want us to do good in the tournament and hopefully win it, but even if we lose, itâs just a game. Whatâs the point in playing it if weâre not having fun? Weâre going to have fun, and by taking her on, sheâs going to get to have fun as well. The more people having fun, the more successful of a game it is,â Fenrir explains.
Serra hugs his arm. Cassiel has no good response to what he said. âYeah⦠just a game. Itâs easy to forget that sometimes. That excuse never works up in the empire, but I guess itâs true,â she says.
âWeâre going to have fun no matter what happens. If we win, we win. If we lose, we lose.â
Hearing him say that removes a ton of stress that has been weighing Cassiel down. His belief is the exact opposite of everybody sheâs played with before him â of everybody who only cared about winning and being the best.
âHaving fun is the true endgame, donât you know?â
