Chapter Twenty-Nine

The week had flown by and before I knew it, it was Friday, school went like it always did.  I spent all yesterday shopping getting everything I needed for tonight.

Once the bell rung, I waved goodbye to Quinn and Jasmine and bounded for my jeep and drove home. I barely turned the engine off and I jumped out, running into the house.

I practically flew up the stairs, tossed my bag into my room and got back downstairs tying my hair up into a bun.

I didn't even pause starting to get to work and by the time I knew it I had the table filled with a good Spaghetti dinner in a large pot enough to fill a hungry wolf. There was a salad, a batch of my special chocolate cookies and a garlic bread in the oven.

I had a smaller portion of Spaghetti that had no meat in it.

"Wow honey this looks great." I heard looking up, I spotted Charlie coming in.

"Really?" I asked feeling nervous all of a sudden. "You don't think it's too much?"

"A woman who can cook is a woman after a man's heart."

I smiled at him. The talking stopped there as Charlie opened the fridge for a beer and I headed upstairs to change.

I walked over to my dresser pulling out a black sleeved top, and a pair of my jeans from the top drawer, getting dressed and moved to my closet, reaching for a black dress type shirt, it had a silver clip on the deep neckline, it only showed a little

Slipping on my sparkly purple flats, my valerian necklace and my special bracelets. I heard a knock on the door just as I took my hair out of the bun and brushed it out a few times, leaving it down and headed back downstairs.

Skipping down the stairs without falling, I stopped right in front of the door and swung it open.

I was surprised to see Paul standing on the other side, wearing a black pair of jeans and a black button shirt, long sleeved. It wasn't his normal attire. He noticed I was staring and had a smirk on his face.

'Like what you see?' I heard him think.

I nodded looking him over again with no shame.

"Who are you and what have you done to my hot head?"

He chuckled, moving to kiss my cheek.

"Are you going to stand there making googly eyes or invite him in?" I heard Charlie ask I nearly forgot he was on the couch, waiting for the game to start.

I rolled my eyes in amusement but found myself smirking. I stepped aside to let him in, he followed me in, he had a case of beer in his hand.

Charlie stood up from the couch.

"Lahote." He greeted holding his hand out.

"Chef Swan." Paul said shaking his hand firmly, it seemed to make Charlie happy. "I uh hope you don't mind I didn't know what else to bring, Billy said you enjoy a good vitamin R."

From the kitchen, a faint beeping started signaling that the garlic bread I had put in the oven was ready. Feeling like I could leave these two alone, I turned heading into the kitchen.

"Good man." I heard Charlie say and felt my heart fill with ease.

I pulled the bread from the oven, setting it on a cutting board I had on the counter and started plating.

"Dinners done!" I announced walking out with two plates spotting the two on the couch relaxing, watching the game and getting along.

Charlie was in such a good mood, he didn't even notice the amount of food I kind of piled onto Paul's plate. My wolf could eat you out of house and home and trust me he's done it to Emily, that was when Emily and I came up an idea, we would both pitch in when it came to buying food to fill our men.

Kim contributed a little but I pitched in the most because I had money.

I left the room again for a quick second grabbing myself a root beer and a coke, and grabbed my personal meatless meal and returned just as the first batter was stepping up to the plate.

I sat next to Paul, handing him, his drink. He smiled at me.

The next couple of hours were spent with the three of us screaming at the TV, chewing on our meal, Charlie trying to offer Paul a beer only though he's only eighteen, when I reminded him of that he shrugged and said call the cops.

It amused me over the fact my uncle was a cop.

When the game was over, I walked into the kitchen placing the dirty dishes in the sink and turned to the empty pot setting on my stove.

I grabbed it setting it in the sink and turned the hot water on, a dab or two of soap and filled it so it would soak a little.

Hearing footsteps, I glanced over spotting Paul coming up behind me and hug me.

Smiling, I turned in his arms and leaned against the sink.

"Thank you." I muttered, he tilted his head at me. I smiled lighter. "Thank you for giving this a try... Being in the same house as Bella can be stressful, she's my cousin and I love her but she can be a lot to handle... First Edward and now this thing she's doing with Jake... I can't read her mind but her auras give me a headache."

"You know I'd do anything for you."

I smiled at him, leaning up I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

"I think I deserve a better reward than that." He muttered before gently reaching up with one of his large hands and cupped my cheek.

I sucked in a small breath as Paul moved his head down to mine. In a few minutes his lips landed on mine. Soft, but firm, warm but a little aggressive... my hot head.

It took me a few minutes to relax into the kiss and slid my hands up interlocking around his neck as his moved down enveloping around my waist and drug me in deeper.

We were quickly broken apart when the house phone started ringing.  Since Charlie was in the living room still and I was busy breathing heavy, trying to calm down.

Bella came running down the stairs, not pausing as she picked up the ugly light green device.

"Hello?" There was a small pause. "Jacob!"

I looked over at the name my best friend. One of them and took in my cousin's excitement. I could see her aura glowing. My eyes narrowed, tilting my head. I couldn't hear what was on the other side but the look on Paul's face told me he could, I glanced up at him, staring into his eyes. Reading his mind, I could see what he was hearing.

"Yeah I'll see you tomorrow." Bella said excitedly, before letting out a small sigh and got quieter. "Yes Jacob, I'll tell Lena..."  She hung up the phone and spun around spotting Paul and I just standing there.

Seeing the big guy standing in our kitchen, with his arms around me still in our same position... An awkward silence grew as Bella's eyes went wide as if she just now noticed us.

Resting my hand on Paul's chest, I turned to her, shaking away annoyed thoughts in my head.

"What did Jacob want?"  I asked, I already knew thanks to my smart wolf but I wanted to hear it from Bella.

"He was just calling to let us know they're done." She said eyeing in Charlie's direction.

His focus was still pretty much glued to the tv, popping open another beer from the case Paul had brought but Bella lowered her breath so neither he and Paul could hear even though Paul already knew.

I frowned at her deeply, Paul seemed to notice and kissed my cheek, nuzzling me. It caught Bella's attention cause her eyes flickered to him.

"I should get going." Paul whispered patting my back. 'Night patrol starts in three hours, told Sam I'd be back by then and you should deal with this'

I frowned looking up at him, instead of complaining I just nodded in understanding.

He grabbed my hand, dragging me with him as he walked out. We stopped in the living room.

"Thanks for letting me come over and watch the game." Paul told my uncle.

"No problem." Charlie said turning his head for a second giving us his attention. "Hope you had fun, anytime you want to stop by feel free."

Paul gave him a small nod and a smile, waving at him.

I walked him to the door and stepped out onto the porch with him.

"Will I see you tomorrow?" He asked turning to me.

"I have teas to drop off to Emily and Embry's shifter makeover to deal with."  I told him sighing heavy. "Sounds like I'm on Bella duty but as long as nothing else goes off Jazz, Quinn and I planned to have a ritual in the woods, mediate, check the barrier... Circle time is needed big time."

"You'll be safe right?"

"Of course." I muttered smiling at him. "You boys have your jobs and we have ours... Magic protects us."

Hearing a howl alerting us that an Alpha was signaling the pack, I knew that meant Sam was calling.

Paul and I glanced in the direction it was coming from. I frowned a little and pulled him into a hug, burring my head. He hugged me just as tight.

"I love you." I murmured quietly.

"I love you too."

Paul pulled back, smiling at me. He gave me a quick kiss before walking down the stairs and headed for the woods.

I leaned over the railing, watching his backside until he entered.

There was a sound of shredding clothes, and a couple growls before I heard his howl, telling me and Sam he was on his way.

The next day was Saturday.. Like planned Jasmine, Quinn and I were headed out. It had been a long time since the girls and I have done anything together other than witch duty.  Sadly our plans have changed, we weren't happy but we sucked it up.

We were headed to meet up with Jacob, who according to Bella had finished the motorcycles but first I had one witch duty I couldn't ignore.

I pulled up to Emily's house and got out, I grabbed a box from the back.

"Okay this shouldn't take too long." I told them adjusting my hold on my box. "I just need to do this and then we can head over to Jake's."

They nodded and decided to wait at the jeep.

Walking up the stairs, the door was already open, I entered hearing noise and looked around, no one was here except Emily so I just walked in.

She was pulling something from the oven dressed in her green apron.

"Hey Em." I greeted.

"Hey."

She put a tray of muffins on a cooling rack and came over to me as I sat my box on the table.

I glanced around.

"Where's the guys?"

"They should be here soon from morning patrol." She said sighing. "Sam's been working on fitting Embry into the schedule, but they're not really adjusting."

I nodded in understanding before remembering something and reached into my bag, pulling out a small black bag.

"I nearly forgot I got your teas." I added handing it over to her.

"Thanks." She said gratefully setting it on the counter.

"I'm still searching for a way to heal you." I told her gently. "I haven't forgotten."

"You think you can?"

I stared at her for a few minutes.

"I can't make any promises but I remember there was a healing remedy, Grams had... It should be in the old house but I promise I'll do my best."

She nodded, pulling me into a hug.

"Elena."

We pulled apart turning to the door, Sam and Paul were walking in. I frowned seeing dark circles around his eyes.

"Did either of you get any sleep last night?" I asked as Paul wrapped his arm around me and kissed my cheek. I laid my hand on his face, brushing my thumb under his eyes, he sighed tiredly laying his head on my shoulder for a second. I smiled at him.

"Not really I ran patrol with Embry until three in the morning." Sam said kissing Emily, he glanced at me. "Why didn't you warn me his mind was so.... busy?"

"He's not that bad." I told him chuckling. "It's much better than Jared's. You guys forget I don't just read your minds I can see your auras too...." I shuddered.

He and Paul gave me small smiles at my jokes. Paul leaned down and pepper kissed my cheek making me laugh.

I grinned pushing him away a little. I stepped out of my man's embrace and pulled things out of my box, laying them on the table in specific spots.

Emily and Sam watched with smiles on their faces, they were used to our small touches like we were with them. We didn't get nervous or feel weird about the PDA in front of others.

Paul moved sitting on the bench beside me, just staying close.

"Just what's going on in here?" A voice said.

I turned spotting Embry walking in with Jared's arm slung around his shoulder. Both had goofy smirks on their faces.

"Perfect you are just in time." I told him unrolling my hair cutting kit, a special paper that had a symbol on it and a vial of a potion.

"Time for what?" Em asked raising an eyebrow.

"Shifter makeover." I told him grinning brightly.

"You're kidding right?"

"Nope." I said popping the p and gestured for him to sit.

He just stood there, looking at me.

Staring back at him, I gave him a tiny firm glare.  Embry looked at Paul, like he was asking if this was really his woman. Paul glared at him, I could almost see the bomb ticking in his head.

"I heard that." I told him laying my hand on Paul's shoulder, he actually calmed down the moment I touched him. I crossed my arms staring Embry down.  "Do you really wanna test me to find out? We can either do this peacefully or the witch way."

My eyes flashed gold.

"She's joking right?"

"I wouldn't count on it." Sam told him smirking. "She had Paul pinned for an hour, never saw someone shift back and forth so fast."

Paul glared at Sam, I smirked, leaning down to kiss his cheek. Paul looked from Sam to me.

"He wouldn't be my hot head for nothing." I retorted smiling at Paul proudly.

He slowly calmed down, smiling at those words.

"Let's get this going, I don't have all day I still have a crazy cousin to deal with." I muttered giving Embry a look.

Eventually Embry sat down, and I got to work first on the most important part, that often took the longest... The wolf tattoo that would link him to the others.

I sat beside him and handed him the vial.

"What's this for?"

"It'll sedate the wolf kind of like putting it to sleep for a second while the ink is burning." I told him to grab the symbol. "I have to use my eternal fire, to burn it into your skin..." I nodded towards the vial. "Drink every drop."

He stared at me for a second thinking it over, he glanced at Sam, Paul and Jared who all nodded. Em cautiously downed the liquid.  After that he took his shirt off and turned his right shoulder to me.

I sat the paper against his skin, my eyes turned gold. Resting my hand fully over the symbol, my hand glowed firey red.

By the time I was finished there was a brand new Embry standing in front of me.

I smiled at my work.

"Not bad." I told him honestly. "I think you were easier than the other three."

"Hey" Paul said defensively. "What about me?"

"Your kidding right." I retorted giving my man a look. "I love you but I never saw such a big man cry so much over a simple tattoo... Why do you think I had to magically hold you down... It took a lot of magic."

"But it was kind of funny watching how fast he phased back and forth while in the air." Jared said chuckling.

I grinned remembering that. He wasn't really in the air but in order for me to keep him still I had to use my telekinesis.

Embry snickered, Sam and Emily laughed while Paul rolled his eyes but had a small smirk of amusement on his face, he pulled me closer and kissed my cheek.

"Hey Lena... You ready? Jazz is getting antsy." A voice greeted.

Embry had his mouth to open to let out an Embry approved joke just when the door opened, he turned and suddenly his eyes went wide, almost like he was frozen.

Blinking in confusion, I turned seeing Quinn... She was staring back at Embry, I glanced between them, turning to Paul.

Everyone was staring them down.

"Dude... no way." Jared breathed out, slapping Embry on the shoulder.

Em jumped slightly snapping his head over to Jared, in confusion and surprise.

"Uh.... did you just?" I trailed off tilting my head at them for a second and looked at Paul again.

I realized what had happened and smiled, sharing a look with Emily.

"Well... how about that." Emily said grinning.

I nodded in agreement, eyeing Embry for a second.

A minute passed till Quinn pulled her eyes away and turned to me. I nodded towards Paul giving her a hidden message.

"Did he?" She asked as if she understood.

I nodded.

Quinn's eyes snapped over at Embry again.

"What just happened?"

"Something amazing." I muttered staring between my best friends.

"But I uh-" Quinn trailed off.

Emily and I shared a look, I read her mind and gave her a nod.

"If you want to hang around here it's okay with me." I told her smiling a little.

"What about our plans?" Quinn asked nervously. "We can't neglect our witchly duty."

I grabbed my medicine bag, moving over to her side.

"Jazz and I can handle it on our own." I muttered quietly. "I think you and Em should hang out."

Quinn's eyes snapped over to me looking uncertain.

"You got this Quinny, remember what ever happens, will happen if it's meant to..." I whispered even though I knew the guys could hear me, I turned to the others. "Okay I should get going."

Paul picked up my box from the table, he came to my side and we walked out together, sharing a smile. Sam followed leaving Quinn and Embry alone.

Jasmine was leaning against the wrangler with her arms crossed, she looked up.

"It's about time." She said looking behind me. "Where's Quinn?"

"I'll tell you later." I told her.

"Have you seen any signs on Jacob?" Sam asked changing the subject watching Paul put the box and my bag in the back for me.

I smiled at him and leaned up kissing his cheek, turning back to Sam.

"Not yet." I told him frowning. "But then again I didn't see them on Embry either."

He nodded sighing.

"You going to be okay with that?" I asked knowingly. "You know it isn't his fault that your da-"

"Yeah I know." He said cutting me off.

"Speaking of which as a healer, witch and imprinteee.... I'm ordering you all to give yourselves a break." I said staring at Sam pointedly, crossing my arms at him. "I can see your auras, I see your minds and they're not looking so good... Go have a beach day or something, give yourself, and the boys, a chance to relax."

"I don't know we've been patrolling for that vamp you told us about."

"So are we." I told him gesturing to Jasmine and I, leaning on Paul a little. "We have a protection shield over the town; it'll go off if she or any vamp shows up."  He gave me a nod. "You guys have been running ragged, you need to rest, give Paul and Jared a break, and give Em a chance to get used to all of this.... cause now after what just happened?" I nodded at the house. "Him and Quinn have just turned a new chapter whatever happens between them we need to stay out of and let them figure it out."

Sam looked at me, thinking it over before nodding.

"Okay."

I smiled giving him a quick hug and turned to Paul, he wrapped his arms around me, tackling me into a hug as Sam headed back into the house.

I didn't want to go without him, but I had a job, and I didn't want him to feel pressured stuck in a truck with both Jacob AND Bella. Besides he deserved a day to relax.

He leaned down, his soft lips were on mine as one of his hands came up, cupping my face. Kissing him back, it got a little heated.

We were quickly broken apart by Jasmine clearing her throat loudly. Looking over at her she had a smirk on her face.

"Hate to remind you but we have a job remember?" She asked.

I laid my head on Paul's chest for a second in a tighter hug before sighing and slowly turned, sliding into the driver's seat.

Starting the jeep, I gave Paul another smile.

"Love you." I mumbled earning a bright smile. "Take it easy, you're off duty."

He nodded, not saying anything.

I put the jeep into drive and drove off heading the small distance to the Black house.... Through the rearview mirror, I could see Paul still standing there watching me leave and sighed in happiness.

"You are killing me with cuteness over here." Jazz said after a while... I looked over at her. "But what happened to Quinn?"

I gave her a side glance, grinning bigger.

"Embry imprinted on her." I told her.

"What?!" She exclaimed eyes going wide.

Jasmine and I spent the small ride talking about Quinn and Embry and what it could mean. Just because Embry imprinted on her didn't mean they would be together, they hung out with me but not each other... Those two didn't really socialize with each other so it was kind of surprising and interesting.

Anyway parking at Jacob's. Jasmine and I got out, meeting Bella's furious face.  She looked up at us approaching.

"You're late."

"Sorry Bella." I told her shrugging. "We had something else to do."

"Like what?" She asked impatiently.

Jasmine and I shared a look, I looked back at Bella and gave her a firm look.

"We can't tell you that." Jazz told her gently.

"Another secret?" She asked.

I nodded making her face shift into a calmer one.

"Sorry I'm just excited the bikes are finally done." She told us.

"We know Bella but we can't neglect our jobs." I told her making her nod.

Jacob came walking out of the garage, making Jasmine and I go silent, I gave Bella a look to stop talking.

"Angel."

I smiled giving him a hug, pulling back he nodded his head at Jazz.

"C'mon let's get going." Bella said demanding, I rolled my eyes.

It wasn't easy to fit four people in the truck, Bella was driving, Jacob was somehow beside her while Jasmine was next to him and I was on the other side. I made Jasmine sit between Jacob and I on purpose.

I sort of wanted to smack myself in the head for not going with Paul instead. I'd rather be with him spending what time I can but no here I am crammed into a stupid truck slower than my jeep.

And I didn't know which was worst Jacob's thoughts about breaking Paul and I up or getting Bella to notice him. I knew he liked me his mind is very loud .. but he had a big crush on  Bella. I didn't want my best friend to get his heart broken or see Bella get into any more trouble . Bella's sudden change in auras were driving me crazy too.

I didn't know why Bella was acting the way she was, part of me knew it had to do with Edward. I didn't like her going through this but maybe it was a good thing as long as she didn't get hurt.

"Hope you don't mind me joining." Jasmine told them. "I had nothing better to do so thought I'd hang out with Elena." She kept out the part about Quinn.

"No problem." Jake told us rubbing his hands together. "So where should we ride first?"

"Some place sunny." Bella said making me look at her raising an eyebrow.

"Like there's any place sunny around here." Jacob told her.

"Actually I know place that's good for a test drive." I told them earning looks. "It's one of the only pretty places around this time of year.

"Where?" Bella asked looking over at me.

"The Lovelace Gardens." I told her thinking of my home. "It's not far from here, little road between here and Forks, and plenty of space and privacy."

"You mean I finally get to see the house?" She asked.

"You get to see the outside." I added shrugging giving her a firm look, glancing at Jacob. He didn't know I was a witch, couldn't risk him seeing anything on the inside. "Thanks to Athena keeping everything Dad set up in order... Pretty soon I'll be able to move in and reclaim the family legacy."

"Is it weird being back there?" She asked glancing over at me.

I nodded.

"It's always going to be weird Bella." I told her quietly. "It's an empty house that used to be filled with people... like an empty shell..."

I frowned nearly tearing up at the sudden memories. Jasmine noticed and wrapped her arm around my shoulder. I looked over at her and smiled mentally thanking my bestie.

There was a long beat of awkward silence as the mood turned heavy Jacob decided to break it.

"If I told you I couldn't fix these bikes, what would you have said?" He asked my cousin, almost afraid of what the answer would be.

"Are you doubting your mad skills?" Bella joked.

Jacob scoffed grinning.

"No, definitely not I mean they'll run fine." He said cheekily. "It's just maybe if I was smart I would have dragged out the rebuild a bit.'

Bella stared out the window, processing that, sighing.

"If you told me you couldn't fix these bikes, I would say that's really too bad, that we're just gonna have to find something else to do..."

I glanced at Bella knowing for a fact that wasn't true.

"Hey guys is that Sam Uley?" Bella asked drawing my attention.

I looked out the window spotting four forms standing on the edge of a cliff. Jacob's features dropped into a blank look.

"And his cult." He muttered bitterly.

I bit my lip sensing his anger, I didn't see Quinn standing with them which made me wonder where she was. I knew she wasn't going to be jumping so maybe she was back having a talk with Emily or something.

The boys were wearing nothing but cut off shorts and rough housing. I was glad Sam took my advice because they were looking happy.

Suddenly Embry and Paul threw a struggling Jared over the cliff and Bella slammed on her breaks making us almost hit the dash.

She quickly jumped out.

"Oh my god!" Bella exclaimed. "Stop them!"

I got out, walking around to the side as Bella ran towards them, I smirked letting out a laugh, followed by Jacob's booming laughter at my crazy stricken cousin.

"Bells they're fine." I told her staring out at where my wolf was, almost immediately his head snapped over to where I was, hearing my voice. I couldn't help but check him over, he was wearing nothing but shorts, how could he not expect me to stare. Bella stared at me panicking. "I promise they're not really fighting, Jared's fine, they're cliff diving."

She raised an eyebrow at me.

"What on purpose?" She asked.

"Scary as hell." Jacob told her backing me up. "But a total rush."

"And you've done this?"

"Plenty of times." I told her nodding, keeping my eyes on my man.

"It's fun." Jasmine said in agreement.

I could see a look of cockiness cross Paul's face, he flashed me a smile and took a running start and flung himself into the air, twisting and cartwheeled down.

"Most jump from lower down." I told her giggling at my hot head. "And don't always do what Paul just did."

"Paul? "

I nodded.

"Think I could?" She asked making me raise an eyebrow.

"First motorcycles." I muttered shaking my head. "Now Cliff diving?"

"If you can do it, so can I." She retorted.

Jasmine, Jacob and I shared a look, Jasmine and I speaking telepathically. I sighed and glanced back at my cousin.

"Fine but maybe when it's warmer." I told her sternly. "And not from the top and you cannot tell Charlie."

"We'll leave the showing off to Sam and his disciples." Jacob said bitterly.

I bit my lip.

"You don't like them?" Bella asked sensing the tone in his voice.

"They think they run this place." Jacob said glaring at me. "Acting all bad ass, calling themselves protectors."

"What are they protecting?" Bella asked.

Jasmine and I shared a look, Bella noticed our exchange and frowned.

"The tribe." Jacob told her while I stayed silent. "The land, their right to be jerks. Embry used to call them hall monitors on steroids, now look at him."

Bella looked back at the cliff, spotting Embry in his new makeover I had given him. I could sense Jacob's saddness.

"That's Emby?" Bella asked. "I didn't recognize him, what happened to him?"

"He missed some school then out of now where he's following Sam around." Jacob told her frowning. "Same thing happened with Jared and Paul-"

"Paul as in your boyfriend?" Bella asked looking at me.

I stared at her seeing the look on her face.

"Paul isn't a bad guy Bells." I told her earning a look from Jacob.

"You and I used to hang out all the time, nearly every weekend but since you started dating him.. You don't talk to anyone anymore.... Just following Paul around, it's pretty sick. How can you date him? Sam pretty much owns him."

Hearing that I glared at Jacob, I could feel a fire in my stomach boiling mad and balled my hand up into a fist trying to simmer the fire.

"Jacob your one of my best friends and I love you." I told him firmly, glancing at Bella. "But it's none of anyone's business who I'm with."

Bella had a look on her face, probably remembering the time I stood up for her and Edward, I supported her and stood up for it. Her face changed into a supportive look. It actually made me feel better.

It was hard for me not to tell him the truth, I wanted to scream at him and defend Paul and Sam all of them.

Taking in a deep breath I looked back over at the cliff spotting Sam, the only one left, he was staring in our direction. He gave me his usual nod then turned and dived over the edge, cutting a clean line into the water.

"We should get going." I said shaking off what Jake said, stealing the keys from Bella. "I'll drive from here."

Bella just nodded, Jasmine decided to climb into the back with the bikes. We all got back into the truck with me driving, Bella in the middle between Jacob and I. I think Bella could tell I was upset at what Jake said, for once my cousin was putting someone else first instead of her.

I glanced out at the cliff once last time before starting the truck up and headed off to the Lovelace House.
