Matthew’s palms began to sweat; he felt anxious but forced himself to stay calm, hiding any signs of distress.

Even as an older man, Matthew felt intimidated by the strong presence of Zane.

Since entering the office, Nora had not taken her eyes off Zane. She had never expected their reunion after Grand Restaurant to turn out like this. The past few days had left her heart feeling numb.

After a moment, Zane seemed to remember them in the office. He laid the document down, looked up at them, and nodded toward the chairs in front of his desk. “Please have a seat.”

Both of their faces changed suddenly at his words. “Dad, what are you talking about?” Nora forced a smile, then turned to Zane.

“Mr. Hartley, I’m sorry; my dad has misunderstood our relationship.”

Zane’s frown deepened; Nora’s explanation sounded weak. If she hadn’t made their relationship seem like that to others, there wouldn’t be any misunderstanding.

Zane said, “Mr. Davis, I must clarify that I don’t know your daughter very well; please be careful with your words.”

Matthew gasped, disbelief washing over him as he looked at Nora. ‘Has Nora lied to me? Was she being reckless? Now Zane will think I was trying to flatter him. She’s become so foolish! Her lie was said so carelessly.

Nora felt her Dad’s glare but couldn’t bring herself to meet it. She lowered her eyes, uncertain how to reply.

Nora explained, “I do know Mr. Hartley; I was his companion at Morgania’s party. However, we’re not very close. When Frank pressed me, you misunderstood our relationship. Seeing you so happy, I thought it was unnecessary to clarify.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me when I asked you today?” Seeing Nora hesitate made Matthew annoyed. “No need for more explanations; I don’t want to hear it.”

Nora’s expression faltered; Matthew became so disappointed that he wouldn’t even listen to her side.
