Alice stared at Zane in disbelief. âHeâs actually smiling after being ignored?â she thought, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. âIs he losing his mind? But he doesnât seem crazy. Ugh, whatever. I shouldnât meddle in grownâup stuff; she thought.
Alice popped a piece of braised beef into her mouth, chewing thoughtfully. âFine. Aside from being sneaky, Zaneâs actually not that bad. He can cook, heâs presentable, and... well, heâs not badâlooking. Heâs definitely good enough for Elysia, she thought.
Elysia, meanwhile, noticed Zaneâs lingering gaze and tilted her head slightly, âWhatâs he smiling about?â she wondered, her curiosity piqued. She took another bite of the food, savoring the flavors. âZaneâs cooking is really good. I guess heâs been doing this for a while.
As she ate, a small plate appeared in front of her, filled with peeled shrimp. The scene felt oddly familiar.
âNicole treated me to a meal once, and Zane did the same thingâpeeling shrimp for me. Ever since I met him, meals have become so much easier,â she mused.
She glanced up at Zane, who was focused on his task, his expression serious. âEat up. I know you like these,â he said, his voice soft but firm.
Elysia felt her heart skip a beat. âThereâs something about him,â she thought, her cheeks warming. âEven the simplest gestures from him seem to have this effect on me. Heâs captivatingâ
Over the years, she hadnât met many men who caught her attention, but Zane was different. At first, sheâd only noticed how handsome he was. Now, there was something moreâsomething deeper that she couldnât quite put into words.
Alice, on the other hand, was staring at Zane in shock. âZane being this thoughtful? Iâve never seen this side of him before. This is a first! But am I thirdâwheeling here?â she thought.
She was about to suggest giving them some alone time when Elysia slid the plate of shrimp toward her. Alice blinked in surprise.
âElysia?â
âEat up,â Elysia said with a gentle smile.
Alice nodded, her heart swelling with gratitude. âEven if Zane doesnât care about me, at least Elysia does. She doesnât think Iâm in the way, she thought.
After finishing the meal, Alice stretched and yawned, grabbing her backpack from the couch. She was about to head upstairs to her room when she turned back to Zane. âIâm going to my room to do homework,â she announced.
âOkay,â Zane replied casually.
Alice froze. âWait, heâs okay with it? Since when does he let me go without a fight? Isnât he worried Iâll just slack off?â she thought.
âZane, Iâm really going to my room,â she repeated, pointing upstairs for emphasis.
âIf you donât want to go, you can stay and clean up,â Zane said without looking up.
âNo, no, Iâm going!â Alice quickly backtracked, but then she turned to Elysia with a hopeful smile. âElysia, want to come to my room? You can keep tutoring me.â
Zaneâs brow furrowed. âElysiaâs tired. If you have questions, Iâll help you later.â
âWell, what if I just show Elysia around my room? I have so many cool things to show her!â Alice persisted.
âYou can go alone,â Zane said firmly.

Alice nodded. âOh, I get it now. Zane didnât want me to go to my room earlier because he wanted Elysia to stay where he could see her. Makes sense. If we both went upstairs, heâd be all alone down here, she thought.
Feeling oddly proud of herself for figuring it out, Alice headed upstairs, leaving Zane and Elysia alone.
As Elysia loaded the dishes into the dishwasher, she leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, and gave Zane a teasing smile.
âI didnât know you were such a good cook. Thatâs impressive.â
âThereâs a lot you donât know about me,â Zane replied, his eyes glinting with amusement. âYouâll find out more in time.â
His gaze was warm, almost too much for Elysia to handle. She quickly looked away, her eyes scanning the kitchen. âDo you need any help?â
âA girlâs hands are meant to be protected, not used for chores,â Zane said, his tone light but firm.
Elysia chuckled softly. âWhoever marries you someday is going to be very lucky.â
Zaneâs eyes locked onto hers, his expression serious. âMaybe,â he said, his voice low and deliberate. âBut I donât know when sheâll finally become Mrs. Hartley.â
Elysiaâs heart skipped a beat. âIs he talking about me?â she thought, her mind racing. She quickly looked away, her cheeks warming.
She didnât respond, instead focusing on Zaneâs figure as he moved around the kitchen. âItâs hard to believe someone so commanding in the business world has this domestic side to him,â she thought.
Curious, she stepped into the kitchen, inspecting the space like a supervisor on a tour. She glanced at the countertops, the stove, and the neatly arranged utensils. But when she turned around, Zane was right behind her.
He leaned in slightly, his hands resting on the counter on either side of her, effectively trapping her in his arms. âSo, howâs the inspection going, boss?â he asked, his voice lazy but laced with a hint of mischief.
Elysia leaned back slightly, creating some distance between them. âItâs going well. Keep up the good work,â she replied, trying to sound casual.
âAny rewards for my efforts?â Zane teased, his eyes glinting.
âRewards?â Elysia blinked, caught off guard. âWhat is he implying?â she wondered, her pulse quickening. Before she could process his words, Zane suddenly scooped her up and placed her on the kitchen counter. âZane!â Elysia exclaimed, her eyes wide with surprise.
Zane chuckled softly, his fingers brushing against her nose in a playful gesture. âWhen are you going to grow up, Elysia?â
Elysia frowned. âIâm already eighteen. Iâm not a child,â she thought, though she didnât dare say it out loud. âWhy do I feel so nervous around him?â
Zaneâs lips curved into a smile as he reached behind him and pulled out a set of keys. He placed them gently in her palm. âDid you think I was going to do something else?â he said, his voice teasing.
âThese are for my place in Royal Bay. Itâs not too far from here. I know you have Arcanum House, but itâs a long commute to school. This way, itâll be easier for you, and I can drive you to and from school.â
Elysia stared at the keys, her mind spinning. âFinding a place to live isnât hard, but finding one I like thatâs also affordable takes time,â she thought.
When she didnât respond, Zane spoke again, his voice softer this time. âYou can stay there for now. If you find a place you like later, you can move out then. Just donât say no, Elysia.â
Elysia looked up at him, surprised. âHow does he always know what Iâm thinking?â she wondered.
