23 Zaneâs voice was deep and magnetic. After speaking, he turned and headed towards the door, a slight smile playing at his lips.
Elysia was still sitting on the counter, staring after him in a daze. He had just said not to rush, that he would slowly ask her for something later.
She had no idea what he wanted, but just hearing his words gave her an unusual feeling. She thought, âOh well, when that day comes, Iâll naturally find out what he wants.
Having figured it out, Elysia propped her hands on the counter and leaned forward, about to jump down when she paused, suddenly remembering something.
She thought, Who exactly put me up here in the first place?â Her mind conjured up an image of Zaneâs handsome face, still smiling.
She pursed her lips, internally grumbling, âHe put me up here and just left? He should at least put me back down the way he lifted me up.â
When she stepped out of the kitchen, Zane was sprawled on the sofa, a book in one hand, legs crossed languidly.
He exuded a kind of scholarly rogue charm that Elysia hadnât seen before. She leaned against the doorway, carefully examining his striking profile.
Suddenly, Zane spoke up, âEnjoying the view?â
âNot enough,â Elysia blurted out instinctively. The moment the words left her mouth, she felt a tinge of regret. âNo, I mean...â
Zane glanced up at her with a smile. âIf itâs not enough, why not come closer and take a longer look?â
Elysia had a strong suspicion that he was teasing her. Her cheeks flushed red, and she pouted, walking over to him huffily. She said, âAs if! Someone left me on the kitchen counter and didnât bother to bring me down. And here you are hiding and reading a book.â
She said this as she plopped herself onto the sofa, arms crossed and still looking obviously annoyed.
âHow do you want me to make it up to you?â Zane asked, unable to hold back his smile as he looked at her puffedâup cheeks.
When she didnât respond, he leaned in closer to Elysia, his voice dropping to a low murmur. âHow about we go back and rehearse it?â
They were so close now that Elysia could catch a faint whiff of the minty scent from him, her heart beating faster and faster. She pushed him away, flustered. âWho wants to rehearse with you?â
âYou,â Zane replied smoothly.
Her heart gave a tremble. She thought, âZane, you rascal; how can you still have the mood to banter at a time like this?â She stood up, intent on escaping this flirtatious situation.
But no sooner had she risen than Zane caught her wrist. âWhere are you going?â
âHome,â Elysia replied.
âIâll take you.â Zane stood up as well, but she ignored him and headed straight for the door. The evening breeze cooled her flushed face, calming her racing heart.

She walked to the Maybach, opened the back door, and was about to get in when Zaneâs voice called out. âSit in the front.â
âNo way,â she retorted, climbing into the back seat. As she reached to shut the door, Zaneâs hand blocked it. She couldnât pull it closed and eventually crossed her arms over her chest, staring ahead defiantly.
Zane asked again, âYou really donât want to?â
âNope,â Elysia answered stubbornly. She expected that Zane would give up, but instead, in the next instant, he lifted her out of the car.
She glared at him, trying to break free with her movements, but Zaneâs grip didnât loosen in the slightest.
He opened the passenger door and placed her inside. Leaning in close with a captivating smile, he murmured in a low, enticing voice, âOnly you can sit in my coâpilot scat.â
After saying that, he closed the door, walked around to the driverâs side, and got in. Glancing at Elysia with her flushed face, Zaneâs lips curved into a soft smile. He thought, âElysia gets embarrassed so easily!
Zane leaned in closer, making Elysia freeze on the spot. âWâWhat are you trying to do?â she stammered.
Seeing her all tense and flustered, Zane couldnât help but tease her a bit more. He moved in even closer. âWhat do you think?â
Their eyes locked, and they could practically feel each otherâs breath. Elysiaâs heart raced. Then, Zane raised his hand and pulled the seatbelt from behind her.
âWhat did you think I was going to do? Elysia, what goes on in that little head of yours?â he chuckled as he buckled her in. Elysia stared straight ahead, feeling utterly embarrassed. That had been so mortifying.
Zane then said, âElysia, youâre moving in tomorrow. No more running back and forth.â
She froze, thinking, Tomorrow? Does that mean weâll be seeing each other every day?â She shook her head. âNo way, once I find a new place, Iâm moving out. Then I wonât have to deal with this troublemaker anymore.ââ
âWhat are you thinking about?â Zane asked, noticing her shaking her head.
She replied, âZane, once I find a new place, Iâm moving out.â
âA house is only comfortable if you really like it. Take your time, no rush.â He paused before adding softly, âActually, Iâd prefer if you stayed for good.â
Elysia didnât respond. She thought, âHow am I supposed to answer this? Agreeing or outright rejecting both seem wrong. As the car drove through the bustling streets, neither of them spoke, and a comfortable silence settled between them.
Meanwhile, at Arcanum House. Moonlight spilled into the yard, blending with the dim lights. Phoebe sat on the steps, staring at the tree in the yard.
She wondered, âWhen will Elysia come back?â She missed Elysia a lot and wanted to see her.
But more than that, she was bored out of her mind. Thinking about the woman locked in the storage room, her eyes lit up with an idea. She thought, âMaybe I should drag her out for a fight to kill some time?â
Thinking that her idea was pretty good, Phoebe got up and walked towards the storage room. When Zoe saw her, her head away, clearly not wanting to engage.
turned Phoebe didnât mind and walked over to untie the ropes binding Zoe.

âIâm really bored right now. Come outside and letâs have a fight,â Phoebe replied.
Zoe frowned, âAre you trying to get me killed?â
Phoebe was puzzled. âWhat do you mean? I just want a fight, not to kill you.â
Zoeâs face fell dark. She remembered Elysiaâs words and the pill she was given that would cause her to bleed out from her orifices if she exerted herself too much or used any force.
Seeing Zoeâs silence, Phoebe pouted, âLame. Are you afraid youâll lose to me?
âI donât pick on the weak. I donât want people saying I win unfairly. Never mind, letâs not fight. Just come out and talk with me.â
Zoeâs eyes widened a bit, puzzled at Phoebeâs sudden change. She wondered, âTalk with her?â
Without waiting for a response, Phoebe walked out and sat on the steps by the storage room door.
Turning her head to check behind her, she saw that Zoe hadnât followed. Phoebe didnât get upset and started talking on her own, âZoe, do you have any family?â
