Chapter 384
Wooing My Ex-Wife
When she saw Cedrick kneeling in repentance despite the fact that she was in the wrong, the anger within Gwendolyn was quickly replaced by guilt and sympathy.
Hence, she walked over to his side and gently poked him on the shoulder in an attempt to reconcile.
âLetâs stop fighting now, all right?â
Even though Cedrick snorted coldly and ignored her, Gwendolyn didnât give up coaxing him.
âI didnât eat anything after you dragged me back here, so Iâm feeling a little hungry. Why donât you be good and make me something to eat, Ceddy?â
âIâm not free. Iâm being punished right now!â
Without budging an inch, Cedrick pulled out his phone from his pocket and prepared to send a message. âIâll get Summer to prepare food for you.â
Nevertheless, Gwendolyn continued poking him on the shoulder. âBut I prefer your cooking. Besides, if Summer comes over, Nico would definitely tag along. Donât you have to get up by then? Otherwise, Nico would be sniggering at you behind your back, wouldnât he?â
Cedrickâs typing fingers suddenly froze, but the solution quickly dawned upon him.
âIâll tell her in advance that Nico isnât allowed to come and she just needs to drop the food at the gate.
After that, Ezra will bring it into the dining room for you.â
Gwendolyn was rendered speechless.
What a stubborn man. Getting through to him is just impossible.
With that, Gwendolyn bent down and wrapped her arms around him from behind. After taking his phone away from his hands, she nuzzled her face against his.
âStop making a fuss. What will I have to do for you to get back up?â
Biting his lip, Cedrick could feel the anger within him diminished by the tenderness of Gwendolynâs face.
After a quick deliberation, he suggested grumpily, âAdmit that youâre wrong and promise not to lie to me again. Also, never allow another man to kiss you, even if itâs only your hand. Lastly, youâre forbidden to dine with another man alone!â
His demands annoyed Gwendolyn. âBut thatâs my job! I was discussing a business partnership with him over dinner. On top of that, didnât I explain to you that kissing a hand is a custom in Erihal? Itâs not a big deal at all!â
âWhy donât you feel any remorse? In fact, you still think that youâre right!â
Enraged by her words, Cedrick peeled her slender arms away from his waist. âJust let me be. I want to repent alone.â
In the end, Gwendolyn returned to her bed in exasperation and watched him from afar.
âIt looks like you really need to reflect upon your actions. Have you grown arrogant because it has been a long time since I have given you a dressing down? I donât mind you kicking up a fuss and beating someone up tonight, but why are you spurning the olive branch Iâm extending to you? Also, letâs not forget the number of times you yelled at me tonight!â
Gwendolynâs tirade caused Cedrick to freeze. âI donât remember. I wasnât counting.â
She continued, âIn that case, Iâll punish you for not remembering. Kneeling for a single night isnât enough. You should do it for an entire day instead. What do you think?â
The growing bitterness within Cedrick filled his chest with pain. With his nose burning intensely, he fell silent amidst the tears welling up in his eyes.
Sitting crossed-legged on the bed, Gwendolyn took a deep breath.
This was the first time she and Cedrick had a big fight ever since their reconciliation.
At the thought of the baby she was carrying, Gwendolyn breathed in deeply again as she tried hard to contain her emotions. She subsequently decided to stop looking at Cedrick and allow him to suffer a little.
When she picked up her phone and got back to work, silence descended upon the room despite the tension in the atmosphere.
After an argument that lasted more than ten minutes and being ignored by Gwendolyn for more than half an hour, Cedrick could feel the pain in his knees intensify.
Cedrick wrinkled his brows when his breathing grew increasingly heavy and cold sweat broke out across his forehead.
Although Gwendolyn appeared to be looking at her phone, she was cognizant of his suffering from the intermittent glances she snuck at him.
In the end, she let out a sigh when she couldnât bear to see him suffer any longer.
âIf you really stay on your knees for an entire day and night, Iâm afraid you wonât be able to walk for the next two days.â The tone of her voice softened considerably.
Fists clenched, Cedrick replied in a nasal yet bitter voice, âSo what if I become a cripple? No one cares about me after all.â
The words finally forced Gwendolyn to give in.
âNonsense. I care about you. It breaks my heart to see you hurt,â she suggested coyly before giving him a gentle hug and wiping the sweat off his brow.
âIâm sorry, all right? Iâll tell Caesar tomorrow that I canât have dinner alone with him. Instead, Iâll bring you along the next time we meet. How about that?â
As the anger within him eased, Cedrick let out a smug snort. âI have no choice but to forgive you then.
Donât repeat your mistake again.â
âGot it. I promise there wonât be a next time. Now, get back on your feet.â
Gwendolyn helped him up attentively and led him back to their bed. There, she pulled up his pant legs to examine his knees.
Due to the discomfort of the floor, Cedrickâs knees were swollen. Nonetheless, he was lucky to get away without any visible bruises at all.
Gwendolyn proceeded to rub the swelling and applied some anti-inflammatory cream to prevent bruises to form the next day.
âI canât believe how stubborn you are. Why do you insist on making yourself suffer?â
At the end of her sentence, she let out a sigh. âDoes it hurt?â
âMy heart is the one thatâs hurting more!â Cedrick wore an aggrieved expression as he looked at her.
With her heart melted by how pitiful he looked, Gwendolyn planted a kiss on his lips and coaxed, âIn that case, Iâll make it up to you tonight. How about that?â
âWe have to be careful during the first trimester. Since I canât sleep with you, how are you going to make it up to me?â
A mischievous glint flashed across Gwendolynâs eyes as she replied in an alluring tone, âThe fact that you canât have me doesnât mean that I canât have you. I can still use this!â
Gwendolyn extended her fair hand in front of him.
The gesture was immediately understood by Cedrick. Sheâs such a minx!
After a passionate session that lasted an hour, Cedrickâs spirits returned, a result of Gwendolyn releasing the residual frustration he felt.
He then walked out of the bedroom with a satisfied swagger before heading into the kitchen to cook.
Despite the big fight they had, their relationship wasnât affected due to Gwendolynâs timely âintervention.â
The pleasure she brought him shifted his mood entirely.
During dinner, Gwendolyn recalled what happened at the opening ceremony and asked, âToday, Eloise told me that someone unexpected visited her in prison. When you have the time, you should get someone to check the records of her prison visits.â
A serious expression descended upon Cedrickâs face.
âIâve already done that. There wasnât any record of anyone visiting her.â
Gwendolyn stopped eating abruptly. âHow is that possible? Wouldnât that mean Eloise is lying?â
Cedrick shook his head. âSheâs probably not lying. High-ranking military officers have the authority to make secret visits in prison. Such visits arenât recorded anywhere. That said, the information she provided helps us narrow down the scope of our investigation, as only five people in the entire nation have such authority.â
While listening intently, Gwendolyn deliberated on the matter.
Thereafter, Cedrick served Gwendolyn some food before adding, âIâll explain while you eat.â
âOkay.â
âThese five include Craig, Asher, Callum, Sylas, and myself. Among us, Sylas hasnât returned to Salinsburgh due to his mission at the border. So, we can definitely rule him out. As for myself and Asher, neither of us will do anything to harm you. Thatâs the reason why Iâve ordered Nico to keep an eye on Craig and Callum. I believe weâll have our answer soon.â
Knitting her brows, Gwendolyn analyzed, âCallum and I barely know each other, so itâs unlikely heâs the one. As for Craig⦠what do you think of him?â
