Chapter 430
Wooing My Ex-Wife
When Gwendolyn asked about her face, the young woman cupped her bandaged cheek.
âHello, Ms. Harris. My name is Gina Worrell. Two days ago, I fell down the stairs and injured my left cheek. But donât you worry, Ms. Harris. I promise it wonât affect my working hours. Besides, I heal fast.â
The moment she spoke, a hoarse voice that was unpleasant to hear and ear-piercing sounded.
Holding Zendaya in her arms, Gwendolyn gently patted the baby and quickly retracted her gaze.
âYouâre not suitable for the job. Please leave.â
Nico tried to take Gina away.
However, Gina refused to budge and instead asked bitterly, âMs. Harris, you refuse to hire me even before assessing my job qualifications. Is it because of my face? It turns out you judge people by their looks too, Ms. Harris.â
Slightly furrowing her brows, Gwendolyn looked up and met Ginaâs eyes again.
Noticing Gwendolynâs anger, Nico hurriedly dragged Gina away. âWhat are you talking about? Iâve never seen a job candidate as rude as you. How could you accuse her of judging you by your looks when she didnât give you the job? Are you guilt-tripping her now?â
Nicoâs forceful motions caused Gina to take two steps toward the door.
At long last, Gwendolyn, who lay in bed, spoke. âThere are four reasons why I refuse to hire you. One, your voice is so unpleasant to hear and would easily scare the babies. Two, from the way you look at me, you donât seem humble. Three, there is no affection in that sharp gaze of yours. Lastly, and the most important point, is that thereâs something about you that just grates on me. I donât like you, so I donât have to assess your qualifications.â
Her tone was calm and blunt as if she was talking about the weather.
Nico then chimed in, âDid you hear that? Are you satisfied yet? Now, hurry up and leave.â
Gina had no choice but to turn and leave. When she reached the door, she suddenly looked back and asked with a smirk, âMs. Harris, are you sure you can be at ease?â
Before Nico could yell at her, she went downstairs.
Nico stood frozen to his spot, stunned for a second, before hurriedly apologizing to Gwendolyn, âGwendolyn, Iâm sorry. I promise I will be more careful when looking for a nanny from now on. I wonât bring any weirdos here again.â
Gwendolyn nodded with a hum and continued coaxing Zendaya, who was in her arms.
What Gina said before she left suddenly replayed in Gwendolynâs mind non-stop.
That last look in Ginaâs eyes earlierâ¦
Something suddenly dawned on her and made her look at Nico sternly. âHurry up and go after her!
Bring her back at all costs!â
âAll right, Gwendolyn.â
Nico put on a solemn expression, turned around, and dashed out of the room.
An uneasy feeling suddenly rose in Gwendolynâs heart. She quickly called Cedrick, who was working diligently in his study.
âYes, Darling?â
âWhere is Benny?â
After picking up the call, Cedrick glanced at the baby sound asleep in his arms. âHeâs here with me.
Whatâs wrong?â
Gwendolyn heaved a sigh of relief. âNothing. Get back to what youâre doing.â
After she hung up, she gazed out the window.
I hope I was overthinking.
Fifteen minutes later, Nico returned.
âGwendolyn, I couldnât find her. She was so fast and disappeared the moment she exited the house. I checked some of the surveillance footage but didnât see her anywhere. I bet she used the blind spots to escape.â
The atmosphere in the room turned cold.
Gwendolyn contemplated for a moment.
She even knew where the blind spots were. Did she already know, or was it simply a coincidence?
âWhich nanny service agency did you go to? Check her performance reports and make sure you look carefully. We must find her. I must question her myself.â
âSure. Donât worry, Gwendolyn.â
The babies slept in the middle of the big bed at night while Gwendolyn and Cedrick were on each side, separated from each other.
From time to time, Cedrick would pat the babies and raise his head to glance at Gwendolyn lying on the other side of the bed. She was staring at Zendaya absent-mindedly, seemingly lost in thoughts.
âGwenny?â he called out to her gently.
Gwendolyn didnât respond.
He suddenly felt slightly aggrieved.
Not only did his two babies force him and Gwendolyn to sleep apart, but they also hogged most of her attention and affection.
âGwenny, what are you thinking?â
Stretching his long arm across the two babies in the middle, who were like a barrier, he carefully poked Gwendolynâs arm.
It wasnât until then that Gwendolyn returned to her senses and asked, âWhatâs wrong?â
Furrowing his brows, Cedrick uttered in a pitiful and soft voice, âI was about to ask you that.â
âCeddy, I canât help but think thereâs something strange about the nanny who Nico brought over today.â
She lowered her gaze as she pondered with a solemn expression.
âWhat happened?â The serious topic had Cedrickâs expression turning grim.
Gwendolyn explained everything that happened earlier today to Cedrick, not missing out on any detail.
After listening to her story, Cedrick said solemnly, âSo you suspect the girl earlier could be Evelyn?â
âI just feel she looks familiar. Besides, she said something strange before she left, but after thinking it over carefully, she doesnât seem like Evelyn in many aspects.â
Patting her shoulder, Cedrick comforted her with a soft voice, âStop thinking about it then. Nico will find her. Itâs just a matter of time.â
She nodded.
After a while, his hand was still on her shoulder. Not only that, he was gently pinching her flesh as he pleased.
Gwendolyn turned around to look at him with a confused expression.
Smiling with his dark eyes and glancing at her expectantly, he urged softly, âDarling, it has been days since I last cuddled you to sleep. Can you please let me hug you tonight?â
âWhat about the babies? Where will they sleep? What if they fall off the bed when we are cuddling at night?â
Cedrick was speechless.
Those kids are so annoying!
Suppressing his inner rage, he muttered softly, âWe should hurry up and get a nanny so I can be free!â
Gwendolyn giggled. âCeddy, itâs time to change their diapers.â
The next day, Nico started investigating Ginaâs identity while William looked for another nanny.
After yesterdayâs incident, Gwendolyn added special conditions.
The nanny had to be someone at least middle-aged, experienced in babysitting, and have an honest and humble appearance.
That afternoon, it was not Nico or William who stepped into Harrick Villa; it was an executive of Harris GroupâJackson Jallard.
He was someone who cared much about the company. During many conferences, he was always the first to agree with Gwendolynâs decision.
Thus, Gwendolyn had a good impression of him.
When Jackson entered the bedroom, Gwendolyn was holding Zendaya in her arms while leaning against the headboard.
Whenever Zendaya was in her arms, the baby didnât cry or whine and was obedient and quiet.
Jackson, who stood far from her at the door, flashed a faint smile and exclaimed, âCongratulations, Ms.
Harris! You sure are blessed to give birth to twins.â
After exchanging formalities, Gwendolyn got straight to the point. âThank you, Jackson. What made you come all the way here today?â
Jackson didnât beat around the bush and told her the purpose of his visit right away. âItâs about the right of inheritance of Harris Group. May I know what you have in mind regarding this, Ms. Harris?â
Gwendolyn replied, âWhat do you mean?â
âWhen Mr. Marcus was still alive, he said the inheritance would be passed down to girls in the family.
You gave birth to twins. Arenât you going to make the necessary arrangements for your daughter?â
Gwendolyn understood what he meant. âAre you here to ask me to decide on a future successor upfront? Zendy is still so young. Isnât it too soon to hand her the right of inheritance of Harris Group?â
A smile hung on Jacksonâs face. âMs. Harris, I am asking you to do this now because you will have to register their names in the household registry soon. If you have thought about letting your daughter inherit Harris Group, then she canât be a Jenson.â
