Chapter 459
Wooing My Ex-Wife
Gwendolyn arched a brow. Her tone was playful as she asked, âCan you really assuage my anger?â
Cedrick rubbed her soft cheeks and righteously declared, âI can be quite effective. In fact, Iâm probably more effective than most expensive medicine. If you donât believe me, you can check it out yourself.â
He leaned over and planted a kiss on her red lips.
As they continued to kiss, they made their way up the stairs.
When Zoey came downstairs and accidentally witnessed the romantic scene before her, she quickly turned around and left.
Nope, I didnât see anything at all! I should give them their privacy.
The embarrassing sounds were muffled as the door to the bedroom was shut.
When night fell, Gwendolyn finally received a phone call from Treyton.
Although she answered the call, she refused to speak first.
After a few seconds of heavy silence, Treyton finally said, âKiddo, Iâm sorry. I was wrong.â
As Treyton had not had anything to eat for the entire day, his voice sounded somewhat feeble.
Gwendolynâs tone was light as she asked, âHave you thought it through?â
Treyton sounded sincere as he replied, âYeah. I was too rash. Since the engagement was announced in public, Iâm afraid itâs a foregone conclusion. Even if we gave away twenty percent of the companyâs shares, Craig wouldnât relent.â
Gwendolyn sighed in relief. âItâs good that youâve thought it through. So, since youâve been thinking about it for a day and night, do you have any suggestions?â
âWe should try to meet up with Jennifer first and discover the reason she agreed to the engagement in public. If sheâs truly changed her mind, I will not interfere. However, if Craig had done something to her, I will do everything in my power to take her away.â
Gwendolyn sighed again. Heâs got the first part right, but the rest of his thoughts are still too rash.
âJennifer is now the daughter of the Newton family. Are you planning to elope with her? Craig will definitely send the police after you.â
Moreover, Craig worked with law enforcement himself. He would be able to mobilize them swiftly.
Treyton fell silent at that.
He had a hard time controlling his rationality when it came to matters related to Jennifer.
If he found out that Craig actually did something to Jennifer and hurt her, he would go mad and perhaps even shoot him.
Silence permeated from both ends of the line as they fell into deep thought.
A minute later, Gwendolyn spoke first. âItâs not ideal to discuss this over the phone. Iâll get the Federal Bureau of Investigation to pull their people back. Come over to Harrick Villa first, then weâll talk face to face.â
âOkay.â
Half an hour later, Treyton arrived and knocked on the door.
Nico and Summer had also arrived. The five of them sat on the couch and began to discuss their plan of action.
However, the living room soon plunged into a long silence as their expressions turned grim and no one spoke.
After some time, Summer broke the silence.
âGwendolyn, this truly is a difficult situation. Regardless of everything else, Jennifer is now a lady of the Newton family. Even if she is being held against her will by Craig, or even if sheâs being threatened, itâs difficult for us to meddle with the Newton familyâs affairs as long as he can come up with a plausible reason for his actions. We canât whisk Jennifer away, nor can we make her call off the engagement.â
Nico added, âCraig has declared that Jennifer is sick and cannot leave the residence. She hasnât been working either. Itâs likely very difficult to meet with her.â
The living room once again plunged into a deathly silence.
Eventually, Cedrick said, âCraig is a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Although I canât involve myself in the Newton familyâs matters, I can come up with a suitable excuse to get Nico to search the Newton residence. He can use the opportunity to meet with Jennifer.â
If they could get Cedrick to pull strings at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, things would proceed more smoothly.
Gwendolyn said, âIf we use an excuse to barge in, we may end up in an impasse with Craig. That can be our last resort. I will head to the Newton residence tomorrow morning and try a gentle approach. If itâs truly impossible, weâll do it the hard way.â
Everyone nodded in agreement to the decision.
Gwendolyn pondered for a moment before continuing, âToday, Ceddy and I tried probing into the engagement. I reckon Craig will not let the matter go. Moreover, the exorbitant engagement gift that the Abbot family gave to the Newton family will have to be given back untouched. Since Craig cares about profits, it will be impossible to expect that he willingly returns it.â
Summer stared at Gwendolyn admiringly. âDoes that mean you have a plan in mind?â
Gwendolyn smiled slightly. âIf we canât tackle the matter from Craigâs side, weâll just have to approach Remus and the Abbot family instead.â
Everyoneâs eyes brightened.
Unashamedly, Cedrick wrapped his arm around her slender waist and praised her lavishly, âDarling, youâre so smart.â
Unsurprised by Cedrickâs show of affection, the three others did not react to his behavior.
Summer asked, âSince Remus has spent so much money to get himself engaged to Jennifer, surely he wonât withdraw that easily, right?â
Gwendolynâs expression turned serious. âThe Abbot familyâs hotel dining business is doing quite well.
Perhaps we can use this angle. I recall someone having a lot of shares in various hotel dining businesses.â
Treyton, who had been silent the entire time, immediately understood what she was getting at.
Gwendolyn was talking about Asher.
Although the latter had resigned from his positions at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and aviation career, he still owned a lot of both domestic and international shares.
Gwendolyn turned to look at Treyton. âPerhaps you can meet with him and request his help.â
Treyton nodded in response. âOkay. Iâll give it a try.â
Glancing at the clock that hung on the wall, Gwendolyn noticed that it was quite late.
âLetâs call it a day. The rest can wait until we meet with Jennifer and gain a better understanding of the situation. Weâll reevaluate then.â
Nico tugged at Summer to get up. âCedrick, Gwendolyn, Summer and I will be taking our leave first.â
Gwendolyn and Cedrick nodded.
Treyton remained seated and made no move to leave.
âTreyton, itâs getting pretty late,â Gwendolyn prompted.
Treyton clutched his stomach and inhaled deeply, seemingly in pain as he stared at Cedrick beseechingly. âMy dear brother-in-law, I havenât eaten in a day. Iâm so hungry that I donât have the strength to move. Could you get me some supper so I can satiate my hunger before I leave?â
Gwendolyn was rendered speechless.
Cedrick tried to hold back a smile. âAll right. Since youâve thought it through so quickly, Iâll make you something good. Iâll have a drink and keep you company as you have your supper tonight.â
Treyton gulped and let out a long sigh. âThatâs great!â
Nico and Summer, who were almost at the door, perked up when they heard the word âsupper.â
Shamelessly, the two of them doubled back.
Nico grinned. âCedrick, Iâm feeling quite hungry as well. Iâm sure you donât mind cooking a little more, right? I could have some drinks with you guys too!â
Summer clung to Gwendolynâs arm and said, âGwendolyn, Mr. Jenson is a great cook. I havenât had his food in such a long time! Allow us to stay and sate our hunger. Besides, we can even meet the babies.â
Gwendolyn did not know what to say. Is this what they meant when they said itâs easy to invite people to come and help you but difficult to get them to leave afterward?
Cedrick, who had been in high spirits, stared at Summerâs hand that was on Gwendolyn with a dark and cold gaze.
âYou can stay for supper, but youâre not allowed to take advantage of my wife!â
