Chapter 504 Come Clean
Wooing My Ex-Wife
Cedrick was skimming through every witnessâ recent statements in his office at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Jasper knocked at the door and entered the room. He stood at the empty spot in front of Cedrickâs desk.
âMr. Jenson.â
Cedrick didnât even lift his head. His gaze was still focused on the statement report in his hands. âYes?â
he questioned.
With his hands clasped behind his back, Jasper advised, âYouâve kept Mr. Craig in the interrogation room for two days, Mr. Jenson. Heâs still the deputy director, after all. With his motherâs recent accident-â
âQuit spouting nonsense.â Cedrick shot Jasper an impatient glance and warned, âIf you donât explain why youâre here in five sentences, be prepared for a super-intensive training session at my office for the entire evening.â
Jasperâs body stiffened at the threat.
He recalled the torture heâd been through the last time Cedrick made him stay back at his office.
Knowing he still needed to carry Craig back to the Newton residence on his back, he knew he couldnât risk at training session at that point.
I canât take another minute of that kind of torture.
He opened his palm, ready to count the number of sentences. Just as he opened his mouth, Cedrick coldly reminded. âYouâve already wasted four sentences earlier, so this is your final chance.â
Jasper was shocked.
When did I say four sentences? I remember it was three sentences and a pause. Wait. Did he count the pause as one sentence?
Aware of Cedrickâs tenacity, he didnât dare to refute and get straight to his point. âWith the passing within Mr. Craigâs family, heâll need to be released to handle the funeral proceedings if you canât prove his involvement in the case within three days according to the rules and regulations since he is a civil servant.â
He expressed the entire paragraph in one breath, not daring to pause for even a second.
When he finished, he finally got to exhale a deep breath.
Cedrick coolly lifted his gaze to Jasper and smirked. âHe had only been detained for two days, and we didnât even rough him up for a confession. Yet heâs already losing his patience.â
Jasper refuted, âBut Mr. Jenson, Mr. Craig-â
âGet out. Tell Craig if thereâs no progress in the case before we get off work today, Iâll let him walk out of the room to handle his motherâs funeral proceedings.â
âAll right. Thank you for your consideration, Mr. Jenson.â
Jasper bowed respectfully, turned around, and walked out of Cedrickâs office.
The minute he stepped out of the room, Nico came in.
Cedrick resumed reviewing the statement report. He caught Nicoâs entrance from the corner of his eye but didnât tear his gaze from the paper.
Nico stopped in front of Cedrickâs desk and stretched his arm out with something in hand.
Only then did Cedrick set down the report and glanced up.
It was an intact transparent glass tube, He reached for the tube and studied it in detail before meeting Nicoâs gaze.
With a silly smile as though fishing for praise, Nico said, âCedrick, I managed to get the information out of Lucas.â
Cedrick stared intently at him. âThat was quick. What did you tell him?â
The corner of Nicoâs lips curled into a mysterious smile. âMake him empathize with emotions and knock some sense into him with proper reasoning. I checked everything he did as of late and found he had bad blood with Craig, despite being biological brothers. A couple of instigations from me, and he spilled the beans.
Cedrick usually didnât joke or laugh during work, but a rare, gratified smile played on his lips at that moment.
âYou did good. Tell me the details.â
âSure thing, Cedrick.â
Nicoâs delight intensified at the praise he received.
Clearing his throat, he narrated, âLucas claimed he noticed Karl had led every household staff, including. the bodyguards, to bury something in the backyard. This was the day after the welcome party. Feeling dubious, heâ¦â
Cedrick listened carefully as he fiddled with his watch.
When Nico finished, Cedrick smiled coldly. âSince someone is losing his patience in the interrogation room, letâs settle all these dreadful matters by today. Iâm afraid heâll have to wait until his next life if heâs hoping to be released without charge.â
Straightening the collar of his uniform, he got up from his chair and headed out the door with a keen gaze.
âLetâs give Karl a visit.â
It was Karlâs first time being brought into an interrogation room with a cuff around his wrists.
Cedrick said he would be interrogating Karl himself, but the former didnât show up for the entire afternoon after throwing Karl into the interrogation room.
Within the dark room, only a dim light shone down from overhead. The walls were painted pitch black.
The entire room was dead silent as he was the only occupant.
Due to the dim glow, the pressure Karl was feeling was tremendous.
He sweated bullets as he waited in the room. His mental state began to weaken under the immense pressure.
He had no idea when his torture would come to an end.
Suddenly, the metal door to the room swung open.
Cedrick casually walked in, took a seat at the table, and stared at Karl from a close distance.
Karl asked in trepidation, âWhy did you detain me, Mr. Jenson? I donât know anything.â
Cedrick looked at him with amusement. âEveryone who came in here said the same thing. They claimed to know nothing, yet would choose to confess in the end when they broke under pressure. Iâll let you choose. Do you want to come clean or go through the formal process?â
Karlâs body stiffened at the subtle threat. His legs began to shake like a leaf.
He tried his best to keep calm.
Mr. Craig says Cedrick is a cunning fellow. The latter will employ all kinds of psychological tactics once he has a suspicion in mind. I canât trust even a single word out of his mouth.
âAsk anything you want, Mr. Jenson. Iâll answer you truthfully and wonât hide anything from you.â
âPerfect! You promised to speak the truth. The law wonât be so kind to you if you change your statement later.â
His tone sounded casual, but his deep voice was twined with threat.
Karl swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded.
Nico sat beside Cedrick with a laptop in front of him. His fingers tapped on the keyboard nimbly as he recorded Karlâs statement.
Cedrick dived right into it. âWeâve already tested the glass pieces found in the backyard. Theyâre brand new since no dust was found on them. The day after the welcome party, were the housekeepers of the Newton residence instructed to do something?â
Karl was taken aback. Sweat began sliding down his face.
âWhy do you ask that, Mr. Jenson?â
Cedrick caressed his watch and questioned, âYouâre not the only one who knows the truth in the Newton residence. In the room next door, someone already confessed. Are you still planning to hide the truth?â
Karl curled his fists into balls. âWho is it? Which bâstard dares to spew bellsh*t after the Newton family employed them? How dare that son of a b*tch accuse Mr. Craig!â
Cedrick raised his brow impassively. âDid I even mention Craig?â
Karl fell silent.
Cedrick chuckled. âYouâre right. Heâs the one calling the shots in the Newton family. Iâm sure the Newton residence staff had received his order to conduct a clean-up on such a large scale.â
Karl lowered his head. âYou must be joking, Mr. Jenson. Mr. Craig has always been amicable. He usually busied himself with work matters and wouldnât ask about household affairs. Naturally, he wonât concern himself over the menial matter such as cleaning the villa.â
Cedrick didnât refute and instead continued elaborating according to Karlâs reasoning. âThatâs right, so he left the authority of those tasks to you and dragged you into this mess.â
Karl was baffled âWhat?â
âI know youâve aided Craig plenty of times, so youâll be convicted with the same charges heâll get if you donât come clean. He has a lot of charges at the moment. Are you sure you donât want to consider coming clean and striving for a lighter sentence?â
âI-I truly donât know anything. Please investigate thoroughly. I really have nothing to do with it.â
Cedrick was done wasting his breath with him, so he took out an intact glass tube with only a drop of transparent liquid at the bottom.
When Karl recognized the tube, his eyes widened with horror.
Cedrick caught the dread on his face and took out another glass tube filled with transparent liquid. It was the tube Charles snuck out.
âOur professional laboratory staff had made the comparison and concluded the liquid from the tube Charles stole from the attic and the one being destroyed in the Newton residence backyard were the one and the same.â
Karlâs heart sank. At the same time, he began breaking out in a cold sweat.
Nico added, âKarl, Mr. Jenson personally interrogated you to give you a chance. We already know the truth. Youâll be charged as an accomplice if you stay quiet and spend the rest of your life in prison once we go to court.â
I will be sentenced to life imprisonment? But I just ordered the staff around.
Panic filled Karl at the thought of a life sentence. âIâll say it! Iâll tell you everything! I have no choice but to obey my employer since Iâm hired as the butler. I have absolutely nothing to do with this!â
