Chapter 507 Worse Than Death
Wooing My Ex-Wife
Charles uttered, âAll right. Iâll be quick and wonât make things difficult for you.â
He turned around and reentered the secret interrogation room.
Under the guidance of two soldiers, he walked through the corridor to the door where Craig was being held.
When the iron door was opened, the first thing Charles saw was a pool of blood. Craigâs body was covered in blood, his face pale and drenched in a cold sweat. His hands were hung from hooks on the ceiling of the room. That was a standard method of torture practiced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Charles had known Craig for a long time, and the latter had always appeared stately and arrogant. That was the first time Charles had seen Craig in such a pathetic state.
He would be lying if he said that he wasnât thrilled to take in that sight.
After all, he had never considered himself a saint.
Hearing the approaching footsteps, Craig looked up with much difficulty and snorted weakly. â1.
anticipated you to come. Charles, do you think youâve won?â
Charles also laughed openly. âItâs rare to see you suffer, so how could I miss witnessing this scene?
Still, didnât win. Itâs you who lost first.â
1 Craigâs initially unfocused gaze gradually turned sharp as he glared at Charles. âYou can gloat for now, but there are still plenty of male descendants from the branches of the Newton family. Although Lucas is cowardly, Iâm certain he will step up if the Newton family were to be handed to a disgraceful illegitimate son like you.â
Charles was unfazed. He riveted his deep blue eyes on Craig, intending to etch the sight of the latterâs miserable state to his mind. âWhen I was seven years old, as both of us enjoyed eating the same dish.
Caylie thought I was snatching your food, so she deliberately knocked over the soup, which splashed on my arm. When I was eight years old, because I took one of your pens, Caylie slapped my palm fifty times. when Dad wasnât around. My hand swelled up so much for the subsequent three days that I couldnât hold a pen. When I was twelve, I asked to borrow one of your ponies to play with Gwen, but Caylie framed me for stealing your pony. You didnât stand up for me. In the end, I was dragged to the ancestral hall and was whipped a hundred times with a cane. I was in such pain I couldnât walk for a week.â
Craig listened in silence while gazing at Charles in confusion.
The latter merely sneered and continued. âAfter Dad passed away, you, Michael, and I fought to become the head of the family. You arrested Michael for economic fraud, put him behind bars, and deliberately. arranged for your men to torture him, causing him to develop a mental illness and take his own life. At the same time, you used your position to transfer me away. When I came back, you seized a small mistake to punish me in the ancestral hall in an effort to assert your dominance. Also, not long ago, because of the issue with the top floor key, you once again disciplined me, breaking two canes in the process. You should remember all these things, Craigâ
As Charles spoke casually, he extended his finger toward Craigâs chest and poked at the wound on the manâs torso, which was caused by whipping.
Craig winced with pain. He waited for the pain to subside before scoffing. âYouâre such a grudgeful person, remembering every little incident so clearly.â
âThatâs because all those incidents arenât little to me. Caylie bullied me since we were children. You and she had oppressed me for so many years, and now that sheâs dead, itâs finally my turn to take revenge on her favorite son.â
Craig narrowed his eyes, keenly interpreting the hint of malicious intent in Charlesâ words. âWhat are you trying to do?â
Charlesâ deep blue eyes twinkled as he flashed his usual twisted and wicked smile. âI heard youâre seeking death, hoping to be executed, and unwilling to argue against the sentences?â
Craig stared at him in silence.
The smile on Charlesâ countenance grew wider as he intentionally moved closer to the side of Craigâs ear and whispered, âI wonât let you die so easily. I want you to suffer endless torments as Michael did and cause you to go insane. That should be very satisfying.â
âCharles Newton!â
Charles ignored Craigâs resentful demeanor and laughed hysterically, a crazed expression flashing across his eyes.
When Nico finished puffing on his second cigarette, Charles was done with his visit and came out. The latter lowered his gaze, seemingly a little down.
âWhatâs wrong with you? Heâs been hung up, so donât tell me he still managed to bully you?â Nico asked.
Charles sighed. âItâs nothing. Iâm just feeling slightly emotional. I didnât expect Craig to be someone like that, cruelly harming his own mother to frame me.â
Nico put out his cigarette and nodded in agreement. âThere are too many hypocrites in this world. If you donât look beneath their pretense, you wonât be able to tell their true nature.â
Charles hummed a response, leading the way out of the secret interrogation room. âLetâs go back to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to handle the procedures. I can finally go back to the Newton residence to have a good rest tonight.â
Nico trailed behind him at a leisurely pace. âIndeed. If I keep leaving home early and returning late, the little brat at home will throw a tantrum.â
âAre you in a relationship?â Charles chuckled.
âNo. Iâm just taking care of a young girl. Sheâs so many years younger than me, so Iâll wait till sheâs a little.
more mature.â
Judging by Nicoâs tone, Charles could tell he was interested in her. âThatâs good. Youâve been a bachelor so many years, constantly looking at Cedrickâs public display of affection. Itâs about time you think about getting into a serious relationship.â
Hearing this, Nico eyed the other man with an odd expression. âAt least Iâm living with a girl now. Youâre the real old bachelor here. When are you going to find someone?â
Charles was stumped. He got into the car without saying a word.
Nico hopped into the car as well and persisted, âSeriously, you should find a wife soon. Otherwise, if you keep showing up in front of Gwendolyn while remaining single, even if Cedrick isnât worried, Iâll be anxious in Cedrickâs stead.â
Charles remained quiet.
âNow that youâre back, you should settle down and quit rausing trouble tent it better if you just be frie with Gwendolyn Nico continued Annowed by the incessant nagging, Charles retorted. âIâm interested in the little beat youâre When you gift her to me, Iâll be single no more.â
âChurles Newton!â Nico raised his voice and almost lost his raz âHow dare you try to snatch my wor Are you yearning for a beating because you havenât experienced that in a long whiter Charles suppressed has laughter. An amicable atmosphere filled the air inside the car Over the past few days. Jennifer had been undergoing treatment in the laboratory.
Ever since they discovered the type of serum she was injected with, Joshua had been able to effectively treat her condition with the right medications.
With continuous treatment, Jenniferâs mental state improved significantly. Occasionally, she would even thank Treyton, who had tirelessly taken care of her.
One afternoon Gwendolyn came to visit Jennifer Irevion lying on a small bed next to Jennifer, intending to take a siesta. Jennifer was also napping Gwendolyn tiptoed into the room, sat by Jenniferâs bed, and watched her quietly for some time. Sheâs such e pure and kind girl so why did she have to suffer such torment? Not to mention, her own brother inflicted this tragic fate upon her. Craig is truly inhumane.
Gwendolyn held her breath. She grew more upset the more she thought about Jenniferâs circumstances. Then she got to her feet and planned to leave without making a noise.
Unexpectedly, a thin hand reached out and held her palrn from behind.
Startled, she turned around and saw Jennifer had woken up. The latter was staring at her with eyes welling up with tears and brimming with emotions.
âJennifer, you-â
Jennifer held back her sobs and uttered earnestly. âGwendolyn, you donât have to treat my illness anymore. If it doesnât work, then let it be. After all, youâre not a member of the orphanage anymore. If your mother-in-law finds out youâre spending so much money to treat my condition, she will certainly be displeased and may give you a hard time.â
What? Gwendolyn was left utterly baffled by her words.
Treyton, who had been lightly sleeping, also woke up.
He also heard what Jennifer said just now and exchanged a puzzled look with Gwendolyn.
